Around SBN: Notre Dame's Turnaround: How Have The Irish Done It?

Yovani Gallardo and Carlos Villanueva combined on a two-hit shutout in Milwaukee's 4-0 victory over Atlanta Friday night, marking the fourth time this season that the Brewers have allowed two-or-fewer hits in a game. The Brewers have already tied their franchise high for most games allowing two-or-fewer hits in a single season. Milwaukee allowed less than three hits in four games during the 1973 and 1987 seasons.

3 of the 4 are Gallardo starts

Scored three times and detonated an indisputable in four visits to the batting box.

Their insistence on hyphenation in those situations is really annoying

"I didn't realize his velocity was that high," said Macha, noting that radar readings aren't flashed during exhibition games.

I've ranted about this before, but I'm still not over it

in Buzz Bissinger’s book that I think was called, “I Love Tony LaRussa and Want To Have His Children,” he not only hyphenated “hit-and-run” every time it was used (which was a lot), but also italicized it. As in:

Tony LaRussa uses the hit-and-run so strategically, and motivates his players to execute the hit-and-run with such panache, that I want to have Tony LaRussa’s children.

Also, cheese.

He is a fan of base-ball, especially the home-run and strike-out.

To-day's base-ball game will be a home-run

Maybe he was emphasizing the distinction between TLR-ball and other baseball

That for any other manager, using such advanced strategy is almost…foreign.

I'm as wedded to the idea of increased hyphenization in English as anybody (sue me, it's carryover from my native language)...

but that doesn’t seem like a particularly sensible spot in the first place. (I’d advocate the “hit-and-run” phrasing Jeff mentions below, though.) Also, right after the -or-fewer constructions:

less than three hits

Maybe getting “less” and “fewer” correct only matters when you can throw hyphens in there.

And by "below", I of course mean "above".

Hurray for my obvious inability to parse thread indentations.

I would probably hyphenate hit-and-run, too

And I couldn’t give a shit about less than vs. fewer. But turning “two or fewer” into one giant adjective is really asinine.

To be serious, I don't particularly care either...

Just found it noteworthy that the pretentious-sounding “two-or-fewer” was followed right up with what ought to be a much bigger transgression to somebody who goes to the trouble of putting in those hyphens.

Special Mention

In 1972, Brewer starting pitcher Skip Lockwood took part in three 1-hitters. He had one CG, one 8 inning stint, with a save by Ken Sanders, and a 6 inning rain shortened CG against the Tigers.
