Game Thread #58: Rockies (25-32) at Brewers (33-24)
Braden Looper against Jason Hammel today, against the backdrop of the draft. The Rockies are coming off a four-game sweep of the Cardinals in St. Louis by a combined score of 33-9, but Hammel has been exceedingly hittable throughout his career, so I have high hopes.
The Brewers made a roster move before the game, activating Mark DiFelice from the bereavement list and optioning Mike Burns back to Nashville. I guess they like Chris Smith, though it would be nice if Macha was willing to use him.
Lineup:
Craig Counsell 2B
J.J. Hardy SS
Ryan Braun LF
Prince Fielder 1B
Mike Cameron CF
Mat Gamel 3B
Corey Hart RF
Jason Kendall C
Braden Looper RHP
The bullpen rest situation:
- Mark DiFelice has not pitched since 5/31.
- Chris Smith pitched an inning on Wednesday in Nashville (17 pitches).
- Seth McClung pitched 3.1 innings on Wednesday (48 pitches).
- Trevor Hoffman pitched an inning on Saturday (11 pitches).
- Todd Coffey pitched 2/3 of an inning on Sunday (6 pitches) and 1/3 of an inning on Saturday (12 pitches).
- Mitch Stetter pitched 2/3 of an inning on Sunday (13 pitches) and 1.1 innings on Saturday (15 pitches).
- Carlos Villanueva pitched an inning on Sunday (32 pitches).

is it wrong
that I am more excited when Gamel comes up to bat than Braun now?

Sweet relief in Tampa
Rays seventh. Oliver pitching. J.Dillon pinch-hitting for Brignac. J.Dillon was hit by a pitch. B.Upton flied out to center fielder Tor.Hunter. Crawford was hit by a pitch, J.Dillon to second. On wild pitch by Oliver, J.Dillon to third, Crawford to second. Longoria was intentionally walked. C.Pena lined into a double play, first baseman K.Morales unassisted, Longoria out.

I’ve got tickets for the Brewers-Dodgers game on July 10. I thought I heard Manny Ramirez is supposed to be back from suspension by then. Is that right? I’ve been screwed out of seeing the guy hit twice (both during one of his mini-meltdowns in Boston). I would hate to miss a chance to see the guy hit.

hall sucks. but unless you want McGehee playing 3rd base defense and getting a single at-bat, we didn’t have many options there.
You've got a point, but let's not pretend that decision was driven by the situation alone.
It’s the same move they’ve been making every game. And while I get the logic of wanting to use Stetter they way they are, you’re still pulling a productive hitter for a non-productive one when you’re down a run.
