Game Thread #78: Mets (37-39) at Brewers (42-35)
New York Mets at Milwaukee Brewers, Jul 1, 2009 1:05 PM CDT
Everyone loves a Yovani-day, right?
Yovani Gallardo (8-4, 2.86 ERA) takes the mound today for the Brewers, who are attempting to get back to eight games over .500 for the first time since completing a sweep of the Indians on June 17. Gallardo has had a couple of short outings recently, but all told he was very good in June: he posted a 2.20 ERA in 32.2 innings. He's also been a workhorse: He's averaging slightly less than 6.2 innings per start on the season and has thrown 100 or more pitches in 13 of his 15 appearances.
For the Mets, it's Mike Pelfrey (5-3, 4.67) taking the mound. The Met defense faltered behind him his last time out, creating a situation most pitchers wouldn't find amusing:
"There was a point there, I started laughing," Pelfrey said following his five-inning outing. "You want the ball to get hit to those guys. They make great plays all the time. That was just weird."
(h/t CBS, via TheJay)
Hopefully the Brewers can give him something to laugh about today as well.
Mat Gamel is back in the lineup, and Jody Gerut gets a rare start as well (h/t McCalvy):
Craig Counsell 2B
J.J. Hardy SS
Ryan Braun LF
Prince Fielder 1B
Corey Hart RF
Mat Gamel 3B
Jason Kendall C
Jody Gerut CF
Yovani Gallardo RHP
In the bullpen:
Todd Coffey threw 25 pitches last night, and has appeared in two straight games.
Mark DiFelice threw 13 pitches last night.
Mitch Stetter has not pitched since Monday.
Carlos Villanueva has not pitched since Monday.
Trevor Hoffman has not pitched since Monday.
Chris Smith last pitched on Sunday.
Chris Narveson last pitched on Sunday.
Wednesday's matinee game thread is now open.

Yovani's pitch count
Does anyone know what Yovani’s pitch count for the season is? Where does it rank relative to other Starting Pitchers?

I'm not sure about pitch count, but
he’s ranked 11th in pitcher abuse points:

I find it
Via the Game logs at B-Ref. I don’t know where his ranks among most pitchers, but I’m pretty sure there’s not another pitcher on the Brewers averaging 100.

For whatever it's worth:
Gallardo averages 107 pitches per start.
Looper averages 95.
Parra averages 94.
Mike Burns averages 93.
Suppan averages 93.
Bush averages 90.
That average is somewhat artificially high because Yo pitches effectively more often so he doesn’t get pulled early, but still…

B-Ref has pitches/start as a sortable stat in play index.
Gallardo’s 107.4 is good for sixth in baseball. Kevin Millwood’s 111.2 is #1.

Since Gerut is the only Brewer not named Bill Hall who can play center field when Mike Cameron doesn’t, I’m ok with the start. Cameron can’t play all 162.

They either need to make him the full-time starter or send him down, they’re wasting him right now. I think with McGehee’s play, sending him down is probably the best option since it’s pretty clear he’s not going to be the starter.
