Brewers to sign Dominican OF Jose Pena
Lots of scouting reports/comments/rumors about Pena and other international prospects in my FanPost. I'll update this as soon as the bonus amount leaks out.

Wow
Huge news, does this tap the Brewers budget for other signings internationally most likely?
The designated hitter rule is like letting someone else take Wilt Chamberlain's free throws.
Yeah...but can he pitch?
: )
Blow Cubs Blow! Blow Cubs Blow! Hey Milwaukee, what do you say? The Cubs are going to lose today.
Pena videos
Here’s the original video by Kiley McDaniel that I posted, and courtesy of Jared at Right Field Bleachers, another video by McDaniel of Pena’s swing.
It was a great selection of awesome.
In the second video
Is it normal to hit the ball when it is still that far in front of you? I don’t really know anything about the mechanics of hitting, but it seems like he might be swinging just a split second too early.
:) + Suppan = :'(
Look at him as about a second round pick, would you say?
I guess the bonus would give us a clue as to where he would fall.
E: George 4 (5, throw, throw, throw, throw).
McDaniel was saying he would get $900K-$1M from the Padres before they backed out
So I would guess it’ll be somewhere around there, which is a low first-round/high supplemental-round dollar value.
It was a great selection of awesome.
is it really applicable, though
Since they have the suggested draft slot money, and threatened to fine teams for going over that value?

Yeah, it's just a crude baseline, since this price is subject to market forces
But still, it’s like having another high-round draft pick.
It was a great selection of awesome.
Bonus
Kiley at BP says its is only a $400K bonus.
He writes:
1. Steal by the Brewers. I had a chance to see Pena in action and while some of the $1 million talk could have been misinformation or marketing by people trying to pump his value, $400k is a very nice buy here for Milwaukee.
By the way, he and Jorge Arangure are great Twitter follows today if you’re interested.
From Arangure
Bonus amounts are mirroring MLB free agency. Top guys getting lots of money, but big drop with second tier guys.
Ben Badler as well
That’s @BenBadler, @kileymc, and @jorgearangure for anyone interested.
It was a great selection of awesome.
He doesn't look very fast in those videos (above)
Is he known for his speed?

Swing
Doesn’t his swing kind of look like Sorianos? Please tell me he doesn’t hop when he catches a fly ball.
If he turns out to be Alfonso Soriano, you're going to be ecstatic
It was a great selection of awesome.
and refuse to bat anywhere in the order but leadoff

he's certainly between 16 and 34

This FanShot is going to disappear soon, since it doesn't get crossposted in the sidebar
So I’m going to keep commenting in the FanPost.
It was a great selection of awesome.
16 years old
I read on the Brewer’s MLB site that he’ll play professional ball in the DR for a while. But with his age (16 years old) what does this mean for his eligibility in the Brewers’ Minor Leagues?
How long before he’ll be of actual value to the organization?
International prospects sign contracts for the next year, so we won't see him until the 2010 DSL fires up
To clear something up, the professional ball he’d be playing in the Dominican, the Dominican Summer League, is affiliated with the Brewers; they share a DSL team with the Orioles—so you don’t have to worry about eligibility or anything.
I guess to be of actual value to the organization he’d have to become at least a trade chit, which would mean performing well in the low minors, so several years at least. For reference, the modestly high-ticket outfielders the Brewers signed in 2007, Hitaniel Arias and Jose Garcia, debuted last year and are currently still in rookie ball, Helena for Arias and Arizona for Garcia. Those are the lowest non-DSL rungs on the minors ladder and both guys are only 18 this season, so it’s probably going to be awhile before we even know whether Pena is panning out or not. Rooting for prospects is a lot like getting excited about what Christmas presents you get this year; rooting for 16-year-old Dominican signees is like getting exciting for what Christmas presents you’ll get in five years from now. I hope you like socks.
It was a great selection of awesome.
I think it's amusing that the exact same typo has been made 3 times in the site's history
E: George 4 (5, throw, throw, throw, throw).
I guess I’m just wishing for the next Miguel Cabrera. I remember watching an 18 year old Cabrera playing in the Florida Marlins’ outfield. Watching Cabrera hit his rookie year, everyone knew he was going to a star player.
So just how ‘high profile’ is this Pena kid? I mean, if the story made the Brewer’s home page, this kid is huge, right?
Would you advise Brewer fans not to get overly optimistic?
He's not cream of the crop, but he's in the next level
He’s the most promising international position player the Brewers have signed recently, but keep in mind that projecting 16-year-olds is not exactly infallible; we gave $710,000 to Rolando Pascual, who’s 20 and yet to make it out of Rookie ball, and $33,000 to Alcides Escobar, who’s turned into an MLB-caliber shortstop. You should never be overly optimistic with any international signee, but you should be more optimistic with this one than the others, if that makes sense.
By the way, Cabrera actually debuted when he was 20.
It was a great selection of awesome.
