Game Thread #89: Brewers (45-43) at Reds (42-45)
Milwaukee Brewers at Cincinnati Reds, Jul 16, 2009 6:10 PM CDT
Welcome back to the regular season, folks. Braden Looper takes on Homer Bailey tonight as the Brewers look to get back on track in the second half.
Follow the jump for tonight's starting lineup and conversation on tonight's game!
Homer Bailey (1-0, 5.16) is making just his fifth start of the season for the Reds, after making the first 14 starts of his season back in AAA (6-3, 2.71). He's pitched very well in July, posting a 2.70 ERA in 13.1 innings of work, but the Reds are 0-2 in his starts. Tonight will be his third career start against the Brewers: he's 0-1 and has posted a 6.55 ERA in 11 previous innings.
For the Brewers, Braden Looper (7-4, 4.94) takes the mound, having lost just one time since May 29. Great American Ball Park might not be a happy place for Looper, who has allowed nine home runs in his last five starts to jump to the top of the NL leaderboard with 22 home runs allowed. Looper has faced the Reds three times this season, winning both meetings at home but losing the one on the road.
In a move that might not thrill or excite you, the first Brewer batter of the second half will be Jason Kendall, who has a hit in eight of his last nine games but is still hitting just .237/.293/.287 during that stretch:
C Jason Kendall
2B Craig Counsell
LF Ryan Braun
1B Prince Fielder
3B Casey McGehee
CF Mike Cameron
RF Corey Hart
SS J.J. Hardy
RHP Braden Looper
(h/t JS)
Obviously, since the Brewers haven't played since Sunday, the entire bullpen is rested.
Thursday's Game Thread is now open.

Kendall
his OBP since June is .340.
over the season, his OBP against lefties is .328.
It’s nothing special, but those numbers aren’t all together terrible.
Cards Announcers On Gamel's First Career HR, ""That’s all they need is another home run hitter".
If you want the stats to say something, odds are you can find a way.
For example, if you want to argue against Kendall, you could argue that he’s hit .207/.258/.241 as a leadoff hitter this season.
.328 isn’t a good OBP. At best, it’s near average. Corey Hart has a .322 OBP.
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
He's been playing better as of late
i guess that was more of my point by taking his stats from June. I still find it baffling that he used to be a .300+ hitter. How does one drop off so much?

With Kendall leading off
At least the bottom of the order can’t get worse.

Hell, he should’ve pitched to Prince.
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
Looper was allowing about 1.9 HR/9 before tonight's start.
Before this season, the worst ratio of his career (excluding his 3.1 innings in 1998) had been 1.1.
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
two more allowed
and he ties the most HR he’s allowed during a season (25 allowed in 199 IP in 2008). as doc brown used to say, “if you put your mind to it, you can accomplish anything!”

It's really weird and flukey
His K and BB numbers are really quite solid. For some reason the flyballs are just going— 17% hr/fb ratio instead of about 10-12 usually
E: George 4 (5, throw, throw, throw, throw).
part of me wonders "how flukey"
i was working in the commissioner’s office (in NY) back in 2003 and one of the guys in ops had a baseball on his desk with three parallel cuts in it. he said it was a ball that an ump had taken out of play while looper was on the mound. the ump didn’t confront him, he just took it out, i guess. obviously this is all hearsay and i have no idea if he did it then or would try now.

strange, possibly dumb question
was just thinking about them talking about run support for Looper – do they count all runs scored that game, or just the runs scored while that pitcher is in the game?
Baseball-Reference uses all runs scored in the game
Which kind of makes sense given that 10 runs throughout the game can get him off the hook for giving up 7 runs in only 2 innings.

i really liked safaris latest updates
so i was using them for a few weeks. but they failed big time today, so experiment: over
i may just switch back to safari 3
i can’t even get safari 4 to open up tabs with middle-click on some webpages (in frames).

yeah and you can't cycle through tabs like you can in firefox
it just goes back in the page history when you use open apple and the numbers (imagine using a laptop)
i have no idea what that is
so unless it’s default, no.

McClung not a happy man
Hopefully the other redheaded fella pitches better.

Cam is a gazelle out there
is anyone more graceful in center than Cam? He makes it look so easy.

Speaking of gazelle's...
… here comes Coffey.

Good Lord
Between Villa and McClung, we’ve got TWO guys we can’t run out there with any lead. Coffey’s going to end up pitching in 90 games this year.
90 sprints from the bullpen?
what’s the over/under on total time running in on the season?:P

I'm sure he does.
And Bill Hall wants to play every day, since he’s the best third baseman in the league. That doesn’t mean it’s a good idea.
Wait a minute
Did I imply that I don’t think Coffey is a good pitcher? ‘Cuz I didn’t mean that. I think he’s a good reliever. I just don’t think it’s a good idea for any reliever to throw 90 games.
No, I didn't meant to imply you called him a bad reliever, sorry
I just like bringing up the Brantley thing.

we had a liveblog for the ASG
and contemplated a bench clearing brawl in which Prince would pull out some leg drops on people
