Rumorville: Roy Halladay (continued)
Ken Rosenthal lists the Brewers as one of the teams "flying under the radar" for Halladay, claiming that Milwaukee has the money and a prospect (Escobar) the Jays want. However, he doubts we have the young pitching to accompany Escobar to Toronto, and Halladay apparently hasn't given any indication that he'd waive a no-trade clause to Milwaukee. Rosenthal also suggests that the Brewers aren't the "perennial contender" that Halladay would want to go to.

Perennial contender?
We only need to be competitive through 2010, then Doc would be a free agent and sign with the Yankees.
:) + Suppan = :'(
From Tom H. and JSOnline...
“Melvin’s top scouting assistant, Dick Groch, was in Toronto to watch Halladay pitch against Boston on Sunday. When Groch is around, the Brewers have serious interest.”

I am not feeling this trade at all...
Unless Toronto is simply dumping salary (which they aren’t) this move will deplete what is left of the minor leagues.
This isn’t like the CC trade when we gave up LaPorta and still had Escobar and Gamel. Then we only gave up 1/3 of our stud stars. Now we would have to give up 1/2. And quite honestly we need them both.
So unless Toronto wants Cody Adams, Jeremy Jeffress, Bill Hall, and Suppan for Halladay, the price is going to be too steep.

And yes – if JP Riccardi takes that trade he should be fired instantly

I would contend
That it would take BOTH Escobar and Gamel, as well as the pitcher the Brewers dont have to land Halladay.
Even if they offered up Parra with those 2, it still might be short of what the Angels or Red Sox could offer, much less the Phillies.
I really don't think it would take that much
The Red Sox could offer more, but they won’t. And I don’t think the Phillies could offer more.

I think the Phillies could make an offer of pretty equal value to the Brewers
It depends if the Jays would rather have hitting or pitching.

If the Phillies offered
Michael Taylor, the Brewers wouldnt be able to match. This of course depends on what pitcher is involved in the deal as well. Jason Donald would be the infielder the Jays want, which couldnt match Gamel or Escobar, but throw in Taylor and Kyle Drabek or a few of their other pitchers and it just cant be beat by the Brewers.
Taylor>Gamel or Escobar, Taylor+Donald=Gamel+Escobar, Young pitching sways the deal in favor of the Phillies.
What the LA Times threw out there a few weeks ago regarding the Angels and Halladay would be the biggest offer that everyone would have a hard time matching. I believe it was something like Wood, Aybar, and one of two big pitching prospects plus one.
But are the Phillies willing to part with that much talent?
They’ve got a heck of a team as it is

According to SI
The Jays and Phillies have begun talks involving Phillies top prospects. Donald is for sure one, Drabek/Carrasco would be another, and Taylor may not even be involved.
According to the article, another GM says that if they put Drabek in the deal with Donald it would get done pretty quick.
Why?
Philly’s are going to dump their prospects for a guy they don’t need to win they’re division? it makes no sense…
maybe they're thinking
world champs
not just into-the-playoffs.

Exactly
They have a big lead in their division, but they would have to beat the Dodgers in the 2nd round and probably the Red Sox in the WS. In LA they would face Billingsley, Kershaw, Wolf (Cliff Lee?) or Lincecum, Cain, Johnson, Zito. Right now the Philies only have Hamels and Blanton, maybe Myers to rely on. They need a sure fire starter to have good confidence going into the 2nd round and WS, Halladay gives them that.
at this rate
wouldn’t haap get the start over blanton?

It's just a Twitter rumor (a twumor? it's not a twumor!)
but apparently the Jays asked for F-Mart, Parnell, Niese, and Tejada from the Mets for Halladay
and the Mets rejected it
that really doesn’t seem like that much…

everybodt wants this guy
the blue jays should hang on to him for they are done for a few years if they part with him
take it easy
why care about a bloggers grammar
Everybody also wants to rule the world
They’re done with him. In that division, the only way they’re going to compete is if they can bring in a TON of prospects and turn into the Rays.

If the Brewers get him
And he opts to be traded at the end of the year, does he still have a say in where he can be traded to?
Opt to be traded?
I thought he can opt out of his contract (i.e., become a free agent) as a veteran traded in the middle of a multi-year deal. I don’t think he can insist on a trade.
"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"
From what I understand
He can demand a trade. If we cannot trade him, he’ll become a FA. I think we would have a tough time getting fair value for him if other teams know he’s “demanding” a trade.

I think
any player who demands a trade immediately gets shipped to the Nationals. That’ll learn ’em.

If he'd agree to be traded here it wouldn't be an issue anyway
I’d imagine it’s more for players with no no-trade clause
