I really like this move

I’d like it even more if it was followed by DFA’ing Bill Hall, but that won’t happen.

I like this move.

A flexible infielder that is hovering around .300/.400/.780 will add value to the lineup. I haven’t got to watch him field, but I will leave it to the fine statmen here to show us how good Lopez is in the field.

As for what the Crew gave up, they gave up the 9th/10th ranked prospect who is older in terms of the minor leagues and an A ball relief. Gillespie, an outfielder, may have been helpful down the road, but I figure outfield talent can be found just about anywhere.

he's .266 lifetime

it’d be nice if he could maintain .300 this season, but i just don’t see it happening.

I like it

Of course, I don’t really know what people had in mind for Cole Gillespie, but Lopez will be the first legitimate lead off hitter since … Overbay? Was he even a lead off guy? I like that gaudy .370 OBP. I wonder if he has any defense to speak of. /me is lazy.

by ecocd on Jul 19, 2009 5:17 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I don't think this move makes sense

Takingg on that much salary, for a guy who is having the best (half) year of his career and whose stats are still inferior to McGehee’s.

There is also no roster spot for him, so this has to be setting up another deal. Hardy makes most sense, but teams that are dumping salary wouldn’t want his. Maybe it means Gamel and Escobar are both going, as has been speculated. Bad move, in my opinion.

by DukeMarkell on Jul 19, 2009 5:18 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

McGehee is also having the best (half) year of his career.

It would be dangerous to assume that McGehee will continue to play at the level he is.

I think this means that we’ll see a McGehee/Counsell platoon at third, and Gamel will be sent down. Probably good for everybody.

I agree with your entire assessment

I’m guessing Gamel has played his last game with the club until September. It’s too bad, but at the rate the club is playing him, I’d much rather have him take every day at bats so that he can get hot for 40 man callups.

Lopez had similar numbers...

for the Cards in the 43 games he played for us last year as well.

by mopack on Jul 19, 2009 6:00 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Eh

Granted, the salary for Lopez is money we can’t pay someone else. Still, Lopez has a $3.75 million salary for 2009, so we’d owe him about $1.7 million. Not chump change, but certainly affordable.

I think he’s definitely useful, especially with neither McGehee nor Counsell at full strength.

But I’m also curious as to who gets the boot. I also wonder: last season he was fantastic, though in limited at-bats. I wonder if the Brewers could get a draft pick after the season.

It ceertainly sets up another move.

I’m hoping it’s just sending Gamel down to Nashville, but it could be in anticipation of a trade that moves someone else (Gamel or Hardy, presumably) off the 25 man roster. While I’m to the point now where I could get behind trading Hardy, my heads going to explode if Gamel or Escobar gets shipped out.

I’ve only worn my Gamel t-shirt about 3 times, for crying out loud.

Not really actually.

I was just trying to give WSB Chris a pat on the back earlier.

I am a little whacked out about the way Gamel’s been handled though.

by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on Jul 19, 2009 6:07 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

If the Cards took the same approach...

with Rasmus that the Brewers have taken with Gamel, I’d be spitting mad too. Doesn’t make much sense. Either he’s ready to play everyday, and you play him everyday, or he’s not and you send him back to AAA so he can get the work in until you deem him ready to play everyday. Suspended, if not stunted, growth seems like a risk not worth taking, if i’m DM or KM.

by mopack on Jul 19, 2009 10:04 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

McGehee

I would say that McGehee (he of the .900 OPS) has made it a little more complicated than that. This team needs to win now. They can’t afford to develop guys at the expense of winning. Long term, Gamel is a better play, but you can’t argue with Macha playing the guy that is producing NOW.

Rasmus wasn’t playing as much earlier in the year (I believe). Once he started producing at a high level, he has been out there every day.

by badgermaniac on Jul 19, 2009 11:38 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

so...

keep Gamel down in AAA until McGehee drops off;)

by PagsBrewCrew on Jul 20, 2009 2:57 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

exactly.

not much sense in slowing his development to get him 2-3 starts a week. Let him ripen a little while longer, then play him everyday.

by mopack on Jul 20, 2009 3:06 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

McGehee is half-injured

as is counsell. It’s good to get another body in there to rotate to allow those two to rest enough to maintain effectiveness.

Nice Move

Give up moderate prospects for a guy who can hit lead off. His attitude problems seem behind him and he is putting up nice numbers. To top it off he is a switch hitter.

by backtocali on Jul 19, 2009 5:28 PM CDT reply actions   1 recs

I like this move...

He’s a switch-hitting 2B that will be plugged in to the leadoff spot. Currently ranked 2nd in the NL in OBP at .371 from the leadoff spot.

We all know that the Weeks injury was a major blow, and this move alleviates some of that loss but doesn’t obviously eliminate it.

Lee might get a bonus for missing the last two months last year

Extrapolating his numbers for time on the DL probably bumps him up in a few categories.

Anyway, the whole thing is kind of moot because they're both A's.

But Pujols missing time would give him a better rating, as was said for Lee above.

Stats used for ranking FA are extrapolated for a full season when guys are on the DL.

Give him an offspeed pitch down and in. He will swing and miss.

by cooper82 on Jul 19, 2009 8:11 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah

So Lee would get more of a bonus, in a way. His stats are extrapolated over two months, almost a third of the year, a pretty big chunk of time. Plus, if he’s hitting .320 and misses two months, that’s two months his average can’t go down. A guy like Pujols who only misses 15 days doesn’t see as much of an increase to the stats he actually put up and obviously has more playing time for his averages to dip.

Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.

by TheJay on Jul 19, 2009 8:19 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

There has to be a minimum amount of time played, though, right?

What if a player, in the first game of the season, goes 3-4 with a homerun and and two RBI? Extrapolated, that would be 162 HR and 324 RBI with a .750 AVG/OBP. That wouldn’t count, right?

:) + Suppan = :'(

by NoahJ on Jul 20, 2009 12:55 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, I think the adjustment changes if you miss more than 60 days

So barring six months of playing out of your mind, your best bet is 4 months of awesomeness and two months of DL time.

Question for those who know better than I do...

… how sad should we be to see Gillespie go? I know that his age and his numbers this year weren’t ideal, but given the jump he made this season, I still had some hope for him. Was that misplaced? And I knew almost nothing about Roque Mercedes…

by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on Jul 19, 2009 6:10 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

4th OF

I wouldnt be too sad about losing Gillespe. He has the chance to be a decent OF, but he has only average tools. With the Brewers he would have been at best a 4th outfielder. At best I could see him as a Ben Francisco type of player (Indians). As for Mercedes, he is probably an organizational guy at best. All in all they got a needed player without giving up much at all.

by backtocali on Jul 19, 2009 10:22 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

He's a decent hitting righty left fielder

which has value in a trade for us. This is exactly what his value was. He’s limited to left and his upside is a slightly above league-average hitter with decent D, maybe a righty Gabe Gross. The Brewers don’t exactly need a backup righty left fielder.

E: George 4 (5, throw, throw, throw, throw).

by Jordan M on Jul 19, 2009 11:43 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

BOOOOOO

I guess he wasn’t getting his ABs, but his defense wasn’t as bad as advertised and Bill Hall is a waste of roster space (That hurts me to say that).

by SgtClueLs on Jul 19, 2009 7:15 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Even if they had DFA'd Hall,

…. which would be hard to take financially, Gamel still wouldn’t get more than a start per week. This is the best move for him once the trade went down.

I’m a little bothered by the “we still like Mat” line. That shouldn’t even have to be said. I just hope they give him a chance to play when they bring him back.

by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on Jul 19, 2009 7:23 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

...

I’ll await how this plays out, helps greatly for a lead off hitter, but boy am I a Cole Gillespie fan. Guess they just assumed there wasn’t any way he was cutting through the depth up top in the majors to play corner outfield. I just assumed he’d eventually step up if we moved Hart.

Well, this should add a lead off hitter we need. Wonder if Gamel will try some corner outfield in Nashville, now that Cole is gone.

Didn't Gillespie have some arm issues that limited him to LF?

If that’s the case, he’s severely blocked. Unless The Mustache was going to ask Ryan Braun to switch positions again.

they’d have to offer him arbitration, which with the number of 2B free agents and the bottoming out of the free agent market would be pretty risky.
