Thank you
This platoon had the makings of a development disaster. I’m excited for him, but he needs to be playing every day — no matter what level he’s at.

Gamel looked lost at the plate
He struck out almost one in every 3 at bats. This is a good move. Gamel will be good eventually, but he just needs to sort it out at AAA.

You mean just get regular at bats..
Hard to get used to a Pro zone when you only get 2PAs every 2 weeks.

Gamel will benefit from playing every game
The Brewers will benefit from having him play every game in AAA, it’s a win-win situation. Gamel still needs some time before he’s the powerhouse that we all hope he is. Right now I’d rather see McGehee with the Crew every day and Gamel down improving

Signed him shortly after he elected for free agency.

Good move
Gamel has potential but I don’t think he’s really helping the team right now…I’m excited about this Lopez guy, is he starting today?
captainbok: What do you like the most about milwaukee
Jeff Suppan: Captain Bok, that is a great question. Does "Bok" mean Book of Knowledge? My favorite thing about Milwaukee are the Brewers.

Gamel should be starting everyday at 3B
He is by far our most talented option at that position and his glove hasn’t been an issue yet. He has been looking bad because he is in a position that he isn’t used to playing, that is coming off the bench. He is actually performing well above average when he starts at 3B.
As 3B
23 G, 85 PAs, .267/.341/.493/.835
As DH
6 G, 27 PAs, .208/.296/.250/.546
As PH
19 G, 19 PAs, .143/.368/.214/.583

Actually...
…he has been looking bad because the major league pitchers found a hole in his swing, namely that low and inside pitch.
He needs time to make an adjustment.

Are you sure that it isn’t the fact that he hasn’t had consistent playing time and it is hard getting used to the major league strike zone when you only start 8 out of 23 games. Especially someone who has played every game pretty much their entire baseball life.

I don't buy it
He wasn’t rotting on the bench. No, he wasn’t playing every day, but he started 13 games of the last 28 games and played in 8 others. I don’t think that is enough “rust” to explain a guy striking out in 40% of his plate appearances. That is a guy that needs to adjust to major league pitching.

So he should go to the minors ...
to work on adjusting to major league pitching?
by Rubie Q on Jul 20, 2009 4:17 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
No
He should go to the minors and work on hitting a particular type of pitches, so when he comes back to the majors he can’t be exploited as much.
by badgermaniac on Jul 20, 2009 7:22 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
...and if minor league pitchers don't try to exploit that hole, or are ineffective at it...
how is he working on it?
I’m guessing the batting cages and sim game options available at miller > nashville.
I agree that he should be getting AAA reps, seeing as he’s not playing everyday in the majors though.

????
You don’t think minor leaguers are going to throw low and inside pitches? Of course they aren’t going to be as effective in terms of location/velocity as major leaguers, but that is why it is easier to make adjustments and work on parts of your game/swing.
I have no idea what it is supposed to mean about one batting cage being better than another. A batting cage is a batting cage. What is different is the level of competition, a difference that allows players to correct things about their game more easily. It is why minor leagues exist.

At least he will start playing everyday to get better for next year

Gamel's defense
I am on record as saying that I don’t think there is any way that Gamel sticks on third due to his horrendous defense.
After watching him for a month or so, he held his own. His fielding percentage is horrible (.925) which projects to about 30-35 errors, but his range factor and the eyeball test indicated that he had at least average range.
He still projects as a pretty bad 3B, but if he hits enough, I am cautiously hoping that you can live with it.

Using 20 games of fielding percentage to project errors over the course of the year is a pretty bad idea
He racked up a positive UZR in his playing time, actually. 1.5 range runs and -1.2 error runs. I’m pretty optimistic that he’ll stick there now, actually.

It is also a bad idea...
…to use such a small percentage of plays to project that he can handle the position, when all evidence in the minors was to the contrary.
The point is not that this was a true level of play, but that even if he were to continue at that level of play, it is within reason for being “acceptable”.

Well the evidence is second-hand scouting reports
I’ve never seen him play in the minors. His totalzone numbers were pretty decent in 2008. I’m just saying he had 4 errors in 36 chances, I wouldn’t prorate that out to form an accurate projection. One different error ruling and your whole projection changes.
