Win Expectancy Graph
SBNation Coverage
Well, 18 out of 19 isn't bad, right?
Braden Looper and three relievers combined to shut out the Pirates tonight and win their 18th game in 19 opportunities against those brigands from Pittsburgh.
Looper pitched seven shutout innings, his first outing longer than six innings since May, and allowed just four hits and three walks, striking out one. He's now won four straight decisions, and is tied for the team lead with nine wins.
Virgil Vasquez had a pretty good outing against the Crew, scattering nine hits and four walks over 6.2 innings and allowing just two runs. He could not, however, find a way to retire Prince Fielder, who went 2-for-4 and drove in a Brewer run with each hit.
The Brewers will be holding their collective breath going into tomorrow, as Felipe Lopez left tonight's game with tightness in his hamstring. He'll likely get the day off tomorrow with the exceptionally early start (11:30 Central time!), and assuming he does he'll have the off day Thursday to recover, hopefully in time to play against the Braves on Friday.

So how much longer...
… can Prince single-handedly keep us in the division race?

As long as it takes :-p

I think Looper had a hand in this one as well

Yay
I’ll always take getting closer to the top. Not looking like the wild card is going to come from the Central

Cameron, Counsell, Catalanotto, Lopez, Gerut, Bush, Hoffman, Looper,
and on on and on.. Seems like we have a boatload of players to take care of or let go next yr.. Is the potential there to get a few decent, Compensatory picks?
not out of Counsell
Even if he does make Type B, does anyone else get the feeling that he’s either going to re-sign with the Brewers or retire?
Not Really...
Counsell won’t be Type B.
If Catalanotto’s contract from Texas carried over, he’d have an option. You don’t get picks of you decline an option. Either way, he won’t be type B (or A for that matter) either.
Gerut is arbitration eligible…also, see above.
I believe Dave Bush has one year of arbitration remaining.
Looper has an option. As mentioned before, you don’t get picks if you decline the option.
So really, it’s just Cameron, Lopez, and Hoffman. They should all be at least Type B, and should net us some picks if they leave…assuming we offer them arbitration, which I’m sure we will…and I don’t see any of them taking it.

Looper's deal has a mutual option, doesn't it?
And if we pick it up (which we will), but Looper declines, do we get compensation then?
Pretty sure Hoffman is type A right now.

Won't be a compensatory pick
But I would be shocked if Mike Rivera is offered arbitration after the season, so he’ll probably be gone, too.

Rivera..
Only has 2 years on his service clock…why wouldn’t we keep him around? And who would we replace him with if he left?
Also, Kendall was left out of the list. He may make it to type-b status, if he’s not there already. Not sure if the team would offer him arby or not though.

He came into the year with 2 years and change
On the roster all year gives him 3+ years. There’s always cheap backups out there if he’s not back.

Ah yeah...
He’ll be a super 2….assuming he’s in the top 17 percent.
I wouldn’t be surprised if they bring him back though…maybe platoon him with Salome (if he doesn’t get dealt). I’m not sure if Salome will be ready to be behind the dish everyday in the majors by the start of next season…and I’m not sure who else we’d find on the market for a starting catcher. Good ones are hard to find..expensive too.

As mentioned above..
Kendall is a free-agent at the end of the season ;)

yes, but the guy with the missing L
is still cheap.

A quibble
He actually won’t be a Super Two, since he’ll have over three years of service time (3 years and 81 days, to be exact).

I missed the game thread i was out but
I was watching the game from a George Webbs which had the game on. That pitch out on hardy sure looked like the Bucs have figured out a sign or two. Pitch out on JJ the slowest no catcher in baseball ?
I can remember a couple of seasons ago Uke was actually accusing the Pirates of stealing signs during the broadcast they seemed to always know what was coming that series
Just a thought I had while eating my Chili ;)
Let me spell it for you Cub fans O N E H U N D R E D A N D O N E Y E A R S
A thought that Rock had during the game as well

and?
So teams still signs. That isn’t technically against the rules right? Don’t tell me anything about “unwritten” rules, because the point of the game is to win not follow some arbitrary etiquette AND win. Why not take every advantage you have to win a game?
if however
the pirates have bugged the visiting team’s locker room…..

FWIW
Cubs and Phillies tied at 1 in the top of the 12th, on WGN
Any body know what an average
Team (mlb average) scores per game? And what percentage of total hits on average come in as runs? If someone can shed light on this I’d be thankful.
by Sealord on Jul 21, 2009 9:59 PM CDT via mobile reply actions
Last Year
The Rangers led the league with 5.6 runs per game.
The Brewers were middle of the road with 4.6 runs per game.
The Padres were the worst with 3.9 runs per game.
Typically, the AL teams will score more runs. Although the Brewers scored the 17th most runs in the majors, they were 7th in the NL. The AL averaged 4.8 runs per game, while the NL averaged 4.5.
Cards Announcers On Gamel's First Career HR, ""That’s all they need is another home run hitter".
The average MLB team scores 4.59 runs per game
AL clubs average 4.79.
NL clubs average 4.42.
The Brewers are at 4.66. link
For the other question, a rough estimate would be a little over one-third as there have been just over 35000 baserunners (hits plus walks plus HBP, obviously misses fielders’ choices and other quirky ways of getting on) and almost 13000 runs scored in the majors this year.
