Partly cloudy, rain. Winds blowing in from center field at 5-10 m.p.h. Game time temperature around 75.

Complete Coverage >

The Brewers are doing their best to make sure you accomplish nothing today, as the Brewers and Pirates get things started at 11:35 at PNC Park.

There will be plenty of time to work after the game. For now, follow the jump for the pitching matchup, lineups, bullpen and conversation on today's game!

Star-divide

Paul Maholm (6-4, 4.28) makes his 19th start of the season today for the Pirates, and his skills could match up pretty well against the Brewers. Maholm allows just .4 home runs per nine innings of work, the fourth lowest total in the NL. He is, however, eighth in the league in hits allowed (129) and second in wild pitches (nine).

Jeff Suppan (5-7, 4.43) will take the mound for the Brewers, taking on the team he made 21 starts for in 2003. The Pirates traded Suppan to the Red Sox for a package that included Freddy Sanchez. Suppan hasn't won since June 12, but has posted a 4.33 ERA over those six outings.

Here's today's lineup: (h/t JS)

RF Corey Hart
CF Mike Cameron
LF Ryan Braun
1B Prince Fielder
2B Casey McGehee
3B Bill Hall
SS JJ Hardy
C Jason Kendall
P Jeff Suppan

In the bullpen:

Trevor Hoffman pitched 1 inning (seven pitches) last night.
Mark DiFelice pitched .2 innings (seven pitches) last night.
Mitch Stetter pitched .1 innings (three pitches) last night.
Carlos Villanueva
pitched three innings on Monday.
Chris Smith pitched two innings on Monday.
Seth McClung has not pitched since Sunday.
Todd Coffey has not pitched since Saturday.

Damnit

So I worked from home today so I could watch the game. Apparently I can’t, neither the rats nor the Brewers have cameras today. I can’t even watch it on MLB Extra Innings.

Sad.

Can we take an automatic out?

Can we just have Hall as a designated fielder and just take an out? It would save us from having to listen to Hall swing and miss at three straight pitches.

whaaaaat?

Come on, couldn’t Theo find someone else to trade for other than LaRoche?
…never mind, this is the same GM who thought signing Julio Lugo was a good idea. (The Rays replaced him with Brendan Harris and that was an improvement, and Harris is not good either.)

the Sox GM or one of the shortstops?

Yeah, Epstein has made a load of great deals, but the other ones tend to be about 95% awful, and 5% epic headscratchers.

Well, if you take away any GM's great deals

Then you’d be left with awful deals and headscratchers…

Agreed

Although it pains me to watch Billy Hall, I do wish him the best, and hope for his sake (and the Brewers sake) he can get back above the Mendoza/Eucker line and give some production to make himself at least tradeable, I think he needs a change of scenery, and without producing some hits/runs, no one will want him and the Brewers just can’t eat his salary.

Id rather see Lee in a crew uni than Halladay. Much lower price and next year only gets 8mil as opposed to Docs 20mil

by sdsowlsa on Jul 22, 2009 12:06 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm not asking this to be a bassmole,

I’m asking sincerely: What gives you that impression?

by Rubie Q on Jul 22, 2009 12:12 PM CDT up reply actions

well....

i have the impression that prince will leave the brewers. I have this impression because 99% of professional athletes who are free agents choose to play for either a perennial contender or the team that pays them the most (Ryan Braun being the 1%). The brewers likely won’t be able to offer either of those things to prince, at least not as well as other teams can.

that being said, he will be traded or lost to free agency, unless we can put together a deal he can’t refuse, which he still might, since prince is sort of a wild card character.

all that being said, i just feel like gamel would be a logical fit at 1st, since it takes no fielding skills whatsoever, which is exactly what he has.

make any sense?

by sdsowlsa on Jul 22, 2009 12:17 PM CDT up reply actions

Fair enough.

But Prince is signed for next year, and we control his rights for 2011. So, unless we completely fall on our faces next year, he’s not leaving until July ’11, at the earliest.

And Gamel wasn’t a butcher at third — in fact, he made a handful of really nice plays. He’s a left-handed stick, with power, in a line-up that is sorely lacking another left-handed bat. And he can hit lefties, too.

What’s wrong with letting him play third every day for the next couple years?

I just checked Gameday. What’s up with all the homeruns all of a sudden. He’s inexplicably been keeping the ball down forever and now meatball city? That’s a truly pitiful display.

This has to demoralize the Brewers hitters. How can they possibly go up into the 4th inning with a positive attitude when their pitcher gives up 4 homeruns in 3 innings? All I’d be thinking is, “i wonder their pitcher is goign to give us 4 hanging breaking pitches.” Pathetic.

That’s something I could get behind for next season, without a doubt. For this year, I don’t see the point of not having McGehee on third and Lopez on second for the remainder of the season, aside from days of rest. Counsell is verstile enough to give rest to either of them or JJ. Seeing McGehee behind Braun and Fielder makes me happy

It would be great to get him some starts in right field. I have to assume the odds are Cameron won’t be back and the most obvious solution would be to slide Corey over (not saying any of us agree with it, just that it might be the most obvious solution for CF). It sounds like he would have the arm for it, so why not at least give the guy some reps out there for Justin’s sake, the only downside being that’s less reps at 3rd that he would be getting.

Honestly here, who do we have to not be nervous about?

I can’t think of a single member of the bullpen who, in the last month, there hasn’t been a post about being nervous over their pitching. So, I can safely say you aren’t the only one worried, because someone is invariably worried about every member of our bullpen =(

by pharom on Jul 22, 2009 1:20 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm not all that worried about Hoffman, DiFelice, Stetter or Coffey

So, as it turns out, there’s a fair amount in the bullpen that’s not problematic. Chris Smith seems to get it too.

I’m not either, but I’ve seen “I’m worried” posts about all four of them in the last month. Two nights ago there was one about being worried over Hoffman and he’s only had… two or three bad outings, only one iffy one was a save situation.

We've had this conversation about Clung (and other relievers) before

But I think Clung needs to stay in a consistent routine to be effective. Unfortunately, starting doesn’t seem to be the answer, but if he needs regular work to be effective, then he’s not going to last long as a long reliever either.

right here for instance. he did his job getting out of the inning and even getting the first two outs of this one. but he allowed a run with a double. give him the hook. settle their bats down and make them wait. new pitcher and still have the lead. I know you cant do this all the time but in the case of a one run lead where the guy has a history of giving up another, hes going to get yanked anyways so why not do it right away?

by Wizzyconsin on Jul 22, 2009 1:35 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah lets just let Hoffman pitch the rest of the game!

Oh wait, he can’t. And we have 3-4 pitchers available and we’re likely going to have to use them all today. So if one of them has a bad few batters, you can’t just take them out.

by Metagen on Jul 22, 2009 1:39 PM CDT up reply actions

There's four more innings (at least) in this game.

Assuming Smith and Villanueva (both pitched multiple innings two days ago) are unavailable, that means the Brewers need to get four innings out of Coffey, Stetter, DiFelice and Hoffman. Macha left McClung in because doing anything less would have forced him to get more than one inning per guy out of his four remaining relievers, one of which is his closer.

This isn’t Macha’s fault, it’s Suppan’s. If Soup had managed to pitch five innings, McClung wouldn’t have seen the light of day today.
