Braves 10, Brewers 2
W: Derek Lowe (10-7)
L: Braden Looper (9-5)
MVP: Jody Gerut (+.034)
LVP: Braden Looper (-.130)
Win Expectancy Graph
SB Nation Coverage
Jody Gerut had probably his best game as a Brewer, going 2 for 4 with a double and a run scored. The WPA log conveniently overlooked his error in the 8th inning, but he's a fitting "MVP" for a game like this. Ryan Braun also contributed two hits and Corey Hart put the Brewers on the board with a two-run home run in the 6th, but the team once again failed to find a rhythm offensively despite nine hits in six innings off starter Derek Lowe.
Even if they had, it may not have mattered. Braden Looper allowed one run in the first five innings, repeatedly stranding leadoff baserunners. The Braves caught up to him in the sixth, however, as Matt Diaz had an RBI single and Casey Kotchman hit a three-run home run to right. Looper finished having allowed five runs and eleven baserunners over six innings. The relievers du jour didn't help matters as Mark DiFelice, Mike Burns, and Chris Smith each gave up runs in their innings of work.

Did not want to be right on my bet but this team is predictable
If we wanted any chance at being competitive we needed a good winning series to end this terrible July. I am officially on board the no trade (essentially its over) with the exception of trading Hardy to give Escobar more time to get ready for next season.
This team has been dreadful ever since Rickie went down, a blow they obviously won’t recover from. Could it be too early to give up on this team? maybe, but I dont know if even a Lee or a Halliday would do anything to save this team. There are way too many wholes in the lineup and starting rotation for this to be a contender…

my question is getting a pitcher going to help
When the offense just isn’t there on a consistent basis sure they have the one game out of 4 where they blow up for 9 runs but than the have the other 3 games where they struggle to score 3 runs a night.(now this the point where Jay will tell me the Brewers are scoring x runs a game and this is all the pitchers fault)
also the pen seems to be imploding like a submarine below crush depth
I just do not see how one starting pitcher can make a big enough difference.
I know they are still in the hunt but that is do more to the terrible play by the rest of the division not anything the Crew is doing.
I do agree that they have not been the same team since Rickie’s wrist popped
starting to get that sinking feeling with this club

Personally, I'd like to get a pitcher that could also help next year.
Which is why I wouldn’t be completely down on a Halladay deal, because if we tank next year we can always just flip him for similar prospects. I wouldn’t expect to tank with a Halladay/Gallardo/Parra/Suppan/FA pickup with the money left by kendall/looper/hoffman/cameron leaving (please let kendall and looper leave)

I didn't see today's performance from Looper..
…. but I don’t particularly want him to leave. He’s better and cheaper than Suppan. It would be nice to acquire the arms in the offseason that would render Looper expendable (since Bush and Suppan are obviously still going to be in the rotation), but I don’t see that happening.
The problem with thinking that Halladay could be flipped for similar prospects next year is that it may not be true. Halladay may draw 4 front line prospects, if he’s dealt. Sabathia, in his contract year, didn’t return that much. If we were to acquire Halladay and then deal him before the deadline next year, we might just get back about half of what we gave up to get him. If it’s going to take Gamel/Escobar/Lawrie/Parra to get him, which is what I’ve seen in a couple of places now, that should be an easy, quick “no”, at least in my opinion.

Oh, yeah, for sure I wouldn't do that deal.
I trust DM enough that he won’t go for something like that. I also suppose that whether or not we hang on to Looper will have to depend on who else is available. He is relatively cheap, I will give you that, but he gives up way too many home runs right now.

Agreed
and that’s why I’d like to see them trade Hardy for a guy like Dursherberger (or whatever his name is) out in Oakland. I haven’t any idea if that’s even remotely what Oakland would take in return for him, but it would be nice to have one other pitcher to look forward to watching on a consistent basis next year other than Gallardo. Hell, if Parra gets straight, a top three of Gallardo, Parra, and the guy from Oakland could be amazing next season. But that’s a lot of “ifs”.
But trading away the farm for Halladay or Lee right now would be insane for all the reasons stated a million times henceforth on this site.
And heck, maybe the Crew will pull an Astros and go wild in August and September and win this lousy division. I know it’s their usual habit to swoon late, but baseball’s wildly unpredictable sometimes.

I can't believe people are still pointing at...
the Weeks injury as the reason the Brewers are .500. What facts support that claim? It should be painfully obvious what the weakness of this team been. The production at 2B has been great, so this theory has no legs to stand on.
