Can the Brewers beat the worst team in baseball and avoid falling two games below .500 for the first time since April 26? Follow the jump for tonight's pitching matchup, lineups and conversation on tonight's game!

Star-divide

A lot has been made of the decision to start Carlos Villanueva tonight, but the Nationals are also starting an inexperienced starter. Collin Balester (0-1, 6.00) is making just his second start of 2009, and his 17th career start tonight. He lasted just three innings in his last start against the Cardinals, allowing three runs (two earned) on three hits in three innings and picking up the loss. He had gone 7-9 with a 4.35 ERA for Syracuse in AAA before getting the call. Balester struggles with baserunners, and posted a 1.519 WHIP in AAA.

Meanwhile, Carlos Villanueva is preparing for his first start since May 18 of last season. He's 5-9 with a 4.40 ERA in his career as a starter, and 11-12 with a 4.15 ERA as a reliever. Villanueva has been struggling lately, posting a 10.80 ERA in his last 17 appearances while going 0-4. He has been pretty good against Adam Dunn, though: Dunn is the only National who's faced him more than seven times, and he's hit .154/.214/.154 off of Villanueva in 14 plate appearances.

Casey McGehee is back in the lineup tonight, bumping Mike Cameron into the second spot (h/t JS):

2B Felipe Lopez
CF Mike Cameron
LF Ryan Braun
1B Prince Fielder
3B Casey McGehee
RF Corey Hart
SS J.J. Hardy
Jason Kendall
RHP Carlos Villanueva

Villanueva is expected to pitch 3-4 innings tonight, leaving at least five innings for the bullpen:

Chris Smith pitched one inning (11 pitches) last night, and also pitched on Sunday.
Mark DiFelice pitched .2 innings (11 pitches) last night, and also pitched on Sunday.
R.J. Swindle pitched 2 innings (35 pitches) last night.
Mitch Stetter faced two batters (7 pitches) last night.
Todd Coffey has not pitched since Saturday.
Tim Dillard is expected to back up Villanueva tonight, and last pitched on Wednesday for Nashville.
Trevor Hoffman has not pitched since Tuesday, July 21.

Enjoy the game!

Speaking of lousy teams

I got my tickets for Sunday’s Padres/Brewers game. Left field box, front row, right behind Braun. The Braunophile won’t have to keep asking me “Daddy, where’s Ryan Braun now?” If the game wasn’t at Petco, we’d actually have a shot at catching a homerun ball! (Or at least causing a Fan Interference call….)

Fail – flat tire on country road.
Win – full size spare.
Fail – lug nuts are aluminum and all rounded.
Win – its not raining.
Fail – waiting for help and mosquitoes are out now.
Win – I can listen to the game.
Fail – I have company tickets to the game.
Win – blackbert still has batteries.

Petco

I live in LA and am going down to Petco this weekend. Haven’t bought tickets yet. I feel like DM, waiting to see if this team is any good this week before I decide if I’m a buyer or not. Was planning all year to go to both Saturday and Sunday’s games. Now, well, there’s lots to do in that town other than be mad at the Brewers. Plus, they’ll be in town next week and I’m not sure how much of this I can take.

Sigh.

I don't have much confidence for the team's playoff chances

But they should be able to beat the Padres, right? Right? I’m still going to at least one game this weekend. I’m a Brewer fan. It’s what I do.

Plus the Angels are out of town this weekend….

No contest. Pittsburgh.

I’d go to the Pirates game in a heartbeat. The Nats stadium is crap. $7.50-8.50 for a fricking beer! Crap food, except for the chili.

If you’re trying to get to every stadium, I’d still skip Nats stadium. Just lie and say you went. The only redeeming feature is the Nats haven’t sold any naming rights. I wonder why….. ;-)

The Brewers are cursed

I went to the game with my girlfriend last night. The game was absolutely horrible.

I woke up this morning to drive her to the Badger Bus, and my car’s battery died. Both of us ended up being extremely late for work. She took a bus to work once she got to Madison. Then, she missed the bus to go home, so she had to walk 3.5 miles home carrying all of her stuff, with a dead phone.

I just read Sgt’s thing about the flat tire. I don’t know guys. Something’s up with this team.

Doesn't matter now

But if Dillard had walked Morgan and gotten out of the inning unscored upon, he would’ve been only the eighth pitcher since 1954 to walk six, strike out none, and allow zero runs in an appearance.

by TheJay on Jul 28, 2009 9:21 PM CDT up reply actions

I would think so.

But 5 walks…

and his second out of that inning was off some pretty generous strike calling. Thats why I thought he should’ve been taken out right then. He was missing by a lot, and with only 1.1 innings left, I thought Coffey/Hoffman could have finished it either way.

I didn’t really expect to win this game anyway. Would have been nice!

Not looking good right now.

Hate to go running off the deep end, but Right now it looks like our starting rotation for the next few weeks could be:
Gallardo
Parra
Looper
Villanueva
Dillard

Of course Suppan isn’t any better at this point. Hard to get excited about the Brewers right now. Don’t blame Melvin one bit, being reluctant to go out and get anyone.

Not to mention that..

I’m sure after today they will say they still haven’t found another starting option. I would expect Chase Wright or someone else to make the next start.

Dillard could.

He’s been starting all year, his arm is stretched out.
No other option unless you want to bring Burns back up to start.

He Could.

But won’t. Unless Suppan doesn’t go on the DL.

found this on another site...

Baserunners allowed by Milwaukee pitching

Tonite* :18 through 7 innings
Last night (L,6-14) 19
Sunday (L, 2-10, Atlanta) 20
Saturday (W, 4-0 Atlanta) 8 (Gallardo)
Friday (L, 4-9 Atlanta) 23

Throw out the gem by Gallardo, and Milwaukee pitchers have given up a whopping 80 baserunners in the last 4 games. Eighty!! They’re giving up 20 baserunners a game
