SBNation Coverage

Take a deep breath, folks: The Brewers finally won back-to-back games for the first time in July.

Yovani Gallardo picked up his team-leading tenth win today, allowing three runs (all on a Ryan Zimmerman home run) over seven innings, allowing just five hits and one walk and striking out eleven. It was Gallardo's third ten strikeout performance of both 2009 and his career.

At the plate, the Brewers took a 2-0 lead in the third on Craig Counsell's fourth home run, tied the game at 3 in the fourth on Prince Fielder's 25th home run, and took the lead in the seventh on a misplayed fielder's choice that allowed Mike Cameron to slide in under the tag. The Brewers added another run in the seventh and two more in the eighth to give Trevor Hoffman a day off. Hopefully we'll see him in San Diego tomorrow night.

30 second promo for the 4 game set with the Pirates was pretty much all about Lannan v. Freddy Sanchez.

I would have billed it as:

“Let’s see if we’re any better with their players than they were with their players.”

August schedule looks nice.

Outside of the combined 9 games with the Dodgers & Houston.. If only we had a #1 & 2 along with a good Manny and Bush.

We'll see..

The July games after the All-Star break also looked nice… but we know how that went.

Believe it or not, the Brewers do have a #1 pitcher… Gallardo and a good Parra is equivalent to a #2 or 3.

The bigger problems are not having a decent #5 (Villanueva/Dillard combo is not decent) and Suppan (who looks to now be on the DL).

Tied for third again, in about an hour.

Russ Ortiz went: 2.1, 9 hits, 3 walks, 9 earned. Yowza.

the best

"That's not a weird stat. Rickie is a run-scorer," Yost said. "It doesn't matter. It doesn't matter," Yost told reporters. "See, you guys have no concept. He's a run-scorer. So there's nothing weird about it. That's what he does."

This just in

Billy Hall optioned to AAA, per McCalvy

on McCalvy's Twitter.

Did he have to clear waivers or something, no WAY did they just think of this now.

by Mykenk on Jul 30, 2009 4:03 PM CDT up reply actions

Hall

I’m sure that they’ve been thinking about it for a while, but then the question is who to bring up. The Brewers want to keep their top prospects playing regularly to keep them sharp. Also, I’m sure they were discussing it with Hall to see where his mind is. Hall could also have been used as a defensive replacement in the IF and OF.

There could be a trade being announced soon which might require the Brewers to free up a roster spot.

Hall is a veteran, so he does need to clear waivers when designated for assignment. Granted, no team would claim him with his contract and current stats.

by sjlee on Jul 30, 2009 5:06 PM CDT up reply actions

Correction

My earlier post about Hall is not correct.

Hall is a 5-yr veteran, which means that the Brewers have to get his consent before sending him down to the minors. Period. If he refuses, they need to either release him or keep him on the roster. Even if they release him, they are still on the hook for his contract. In fact, even if he signs with a new team, the Brewers would still need to pay the difference between his new contract and his old contract.

My guess is that they’ve been offering to send Hall down to Nashville for a while, but it wasn’t until now that he’s agreed to it.

I'm wondering

what about Gamel? Unless they have Hall play 2B or CF

"my goodness"

by BrewHaHeather on Jul 30, 2009 4:03 PM CDT up reply actions

Gamel

I don’t think they’re going to bring Gamel back up until Sept. With the way McGehee is hitting, there’s no reason to promote Gamel as he’d just sit on the bench most of the week… he needs to get some regular playing time.

more good news.

As long as his replacement isn’t Burns.

All we need is the Correia trade to happen

and then trade for another starter

piece of cake

Bill Hall

Should maybe have his own fanpost. I suppose he may have asked for a demotion to play every day show that he can still hit.

Its weird that they would announce him going to AAA without a corresponding move. Maybe they do have a trade in place
