Brewers Pick Up Claudio Vargas from the Dodgers
In return for catcher Vinny Rottino.
Interesting move, considering the Brewers dropped him after a poor season in 2007. I'd be willing to bet that they'll name him the starter for one of the next two games in San Diego.

Claudio
Never in my wildest dreams/nightmares would I have guessed that when I booked my weekend in San Diego months ago, that I would I get to see Claudio Vargas start.

Makes a little more sense why Melvin would join the team on their West Coast voyage now huh?

In the thread about Melvin traveling with the team
There was talk about how it would be odd to see him away from his office if a trade was going to be made. If I was trading for a player and my team was headed to his neck of the woods, I would travel with them. Not only do you get to double check in person that the player is what he is said to be, but you can also do the polite thing and talk to the Dodgers’ GM in person. Maybe I’m just naive though.

how did he enough time to double-check on vargas?
isn’t the trade already made? did Vargas throw a few balls for him? It’s not like he could be watched in-game.

Also
He may have wanted to talk to Vargas about the issues at the end of spring in 2008 and explain what role Mevlin envisions he will have with the team for the rest of the season.
Plus Universial Studios is in the San Diego area. Hello, why wouldn’t you go out there?

He's pitched well so far this year...
But he hasn’t started in a while, he probably wouldn’t be ready to go 4+ before Suppan and Bush are back already. I wonder who gets sent down, RJ again?

Now I'm expecting Vargas and Burns to piggyback tomorrow
And Villy/Dillard to do it again Sunday.
Swindle going back down seems like the most logical move.

I sincerely doubt he's going to start.
… then again, we’ve already started one unstretched out reliever this year, why not another.
by Mykenk on Jul 31, 2009 12:17 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Yeah Carlos will likely start Sunday
Now that he is stretched out.
Sigh

Probably see Swindle sent down now, right? Or does Vargas take Smiths spot?
by Mykenk on Jul 31, 2009 12:21 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Smith has given up runs in 5 of his last 6 outings.
He may need some rest

Don't they have an open roster spot
with Suppan on the DL?
by oconnobe on Jul 31, 2009 12:51 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
My best guess
is that they’ll send down Swindle. That is probably one lefty too many for an already stretched out bullpen.

Has he
worked out his high pitch count, and control issues since the team dumped him last year?
by backtocali on Jul 31, 2009 12:34 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Pitching in relief has helped keep his pitches down.
but not really.

Better than nothing
He’s probably slightly better than the AAA vets and he didn’t really cost us a prospect. This is not a move that a team that expects to contend makes though.
by kingcharlesxii on Jul 31, 2009 12:40 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Sure it is.
He’s something you can use, acquired at the cost of nothing of value.
A contending team wouldn’t NEED Vargas, I guess. But, a team that needs a stopgap to get them through a tough spot and acquires it for next to nothing is pretty smart.

Ha this is awesome
I always thought he was a bit underrated. Solid strikeout to walk numbers, and he was always entertaining to watch. I remember arguing that he should be made into a short relief pitcher or closer because of his supposed ability to get out of jams.

Entertaining to watch?
Didn’t games in which he started end up taking about eight hours to finish?

I find him much more amusing than watching Burns or Villy start
The downside is that he will go 6 innings. No more than that. Usually a solid 6, but that’s pretty much the max.
E: George 4 (5, throw, throw, throw, throw).
by Jordan M on Jul 31, 2009 12:48 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
6 or less
He rarely went above 6 and often went only 5. His pitch counts were always awful. Nibbling at corners for every…single…batter. He’s probably the most annoying pitcher I’ve ever watched. I’m not a fan of this move for no other reason than I never want to see the man pitch again. This is unfortunate.

Somehow this sounds like a pitcher who recently got put on the DL

I did watch just about every start he made that year
As much as he does nibble, he doesn’t really walk that many batters. Checking the gamelog, almost all his starts were 5 or 6 and then that memorable one in which he went 8 and sucked afterward. He has pretty good stuff, too.
E: George 4 (5, throw, throw, throw, throw).
by Jordan M on Jul 31, 2009 12:55 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Hopefully he's only in the bullpen
Well, I say that knowing Burns and Villy are pitching in his place as a starter. Maybe they’re envisioning Vargas stretching out to a long-relief role instead of a starting role.
Still, the man is a pain to watch.

But as mentioned above, he came at as close to nothing as you can get. It never hurts to have an extra major league arm.

I look at it this way:
We’re replacing Jeff Suppan with a younger, cheaper version of Jeff Suppan — except this one can actually strike some people out and doesn’t walk as many hitters.
I’m OK with it.

He's not ready to be a starter
He’s only pitched out of the bullpen in 2009 and that only as 1-2 IP. It’s going to take 2 weeks to stretch him out, right? If not longer. I think this is a bullpen move.

by minnebrew on Jul 31, 2009 3:06 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
A non-prospect in AA from a team desperate for pitching seems right for Mr. Vargas
Considering he’s been out much of the year battling elbow issues, I wonder if he’s even able to start. Even if he is, I can’t wait for another pitcher to nibble at the corners and otherwise dink and dunk his way to 100 pitches in five innings. Maybe he’ll rejuvenate the offense and they’ll score a bunch of runs behind him again…otherwise I don’t think it will be as “fun” watching him pitch this go-round.
Couldn’t do any better, could definitely do worse than a guy with major league experience, even if it’s not terribly impressive.
