Finally...
… Macha found a way to work a 3B into the lineup who is an unknown quantity and needs playing time to continue his development.
not.
by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on Jul 5, 2009 12:25 PM CDT reply actions
Seriously
What’s up with that? If they’re not going to use Gamel, send him down so he can get some playing time. Benching him now doesn’t help us in the long run…
Ken Macha brings you this Gamel update from 1930:
“It gets to be a jam. You’re developing a guy, so do you put the pressure on him that he’s going to be up there with guys on base all the time? … In a way, I was put into a little bit of a ‘zim-zam.’ It’s got me flummoxed.”
Be sure to drink your Ovaltine.
It was a great selection of awesome.
Yeah it's tough.
So clearly the solution is to forget he’s on the roster and play the offensive boat-anchor that is Bill Hall in the hopes that he thinks it’s 2006 finds his stroke.
by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on Jul 5, 2009 12:46 PM CDT up reply actions
oops.
I’m the Bill Hall of font changes in mid-comment.
by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on Jul 5, 2009 12:47 PM CDT up reply actions
If you thought Bill Hall back in 3rd base was worrying...
Macha was saying the other day that if Cameron doesn’t start getting more hits with RISP he’s going to go with Gerut more often
"I hope your name is Rick"
I saw that.
I wonder if Cameron managed to hold in his laughter until Macha left the room.
by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on Jul 5, 2009 12:51 PM CDT up reply actions
Yeah, I saw that too, but that's not the best part
Macha, who studies statistical data on a daily basis, is well aware that several hitters in his lineup have failed miserably with runners in scoring position. One of the biggest offenders was centerfielder Mike Cameron, who was batting .129 (8 for 62) in those situations, including .057 (2 for 35) with less than two outs, entering Saturday.
It was a great selection of awesome.
I wonder if he has studied Mike Rivera's July stats
Dude doesn’t even have a hit! Obviously Kendall has to play every day until that changes.
Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.
Worse
In the JS version of Macha’s excuse explanation:
“The long-term plan is getting more left-handed batters in the lineup. In a way, I was put in a little bit of a ‘zim-zam.’ It’s got me flummoxed.”
It was a great selection of awesome.
Lol.
Maybe he forgot that Hall was the righty.
Or, maybe they’re telling Hall to bat left handed.
I mean, what the hell, right?
by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on Jul 5, 2009 12:52 PM CDT up reply actions
Yeah, it's really a tough call.
Should I play the younger guy, with the higher OBP and OPS, who bats left, which I like, and who has been better than expected defensively and who needs playing time?
Or should I play the older guy, who will dip below .200 if he takes the collar today, who’s terrible with runners in scoring position which I’ve been harping on, and who’s been “looking for his stroke” for 3 years?
If Macha’s flummoxed by that choice, he needs a brain transplant.
by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on Jul 5, 2009 1:01 PM CDT up reply actions
Cut him some slack
He is in a zim-zam, after all. I don’t know what that is, but it sounds scary. Maybe an Earthly relative of the Sarlacc?

It was a great selection of awesome.
I was wondering
what a zim-zam was too. Perhaps he’s been studying English EVERY day and has invented a new word.

Good question.
I am hoping for just Fielder so I don’t need to worry about Braun straining his oblique on every swing.
Misread that as
‘Starting for both leagues’. How would he bat?
I think people were impressed with Marquis
since he has to put up with pitching at Coors all the time. Not that I’m defending the decision, I’m just saying that probably had something to do with it

1:20 is the traditional Cub day game start time,
and they put Saturday games at noon so the local TV broadcast doesn’t interfere with FOX.

I think Gamel should Platoon 3rd with CC and Hall shouldn't even be on the team anymore.
At some point you just need to cut your loses. Maybe even call up Escobar to take the backup infielders spot to give JJ and McGehee days off.
doesn't it kind of defeat the purpose of a platoon
to have two same-handed batters?
dickie_thon: Third baseman Bill Hall / Watches the third strike go by / Gamel grabs his glove
Well..
We have a 3rd basemen who is to old to play everyday, and a 3rd basemen who isn’t all that great in the field. I’m all for Gamel starting and CC taking over if we’re ahead, honestly.
And as far as I’m concerned Hall shouldn’t ever be playing.
Send Hall down...
Obviously he can’t correct what ever is wrong with his swing in the majors seeing 3 ABs once a week. He’s plus defense, but his Offense is so bad that its a drain. Gamels defense is a bit of a worry, but seems not as bad as advertised.
I’d send Hall down, if he refuses assignment, then well, we saved a ton of money. Hall should get every day ABs in the minors and figure it out. I really don’t see much negative with sending Hall down besides maybe some morale problems, but hey, if you don’t perform you don’t get to play.

Why would he not go down to AAA. Knowing no one will pick him up otherwise. Isn't that the best thing for him at this point
More flexibility
There’s probably some team that will give him a shot. If he’s sent down from Milwaukee, chances are there won’t be much of a hurry to bring him back. Might as well take free agency and sign somewhere that has more of a 3B opening if you have to go to AAA.
Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.
at some point it's a sunk cost
and it doesn’t matter what he’s being paid if any random dude off the street could produce better
The cost is already sunk.
And if he’s below replacement, the question becomes whether they like his upside better than the guy who would take his roster spot. Also, whether they’ve got the stones to publicly acknowledge how wrong they were when they extended Hall in the first place. But with Weeks out and the obvious lack of faith in Gamel at this point they’re an injury to Counsell or McGehee away from disaster. Hall provides adequate defensive depth at both positions, though not much at the plate. Barring a trade that fixes the 2009 problem at 2nd, Hall’s not going anywhere.
We all know it’s going to be an interesting offseason. There will be enough moves made and holes to fill that they probably will talk themselves into keeping Hall around for 2010 (he can play 3 of 4 infield positions and CF), but if they manage to address the rotation and the CF position without creating a hole in RF or at 3rd (if, though it seems unlikely to me, Gamel were moved to RF after Hart is either moved or dealt), then it’s at least possible Hall will be released. I doubt it, but it’s possible. He’s already shown that he’s too good of a guy to turn himself into a clubhouse cancer and force a move. If he would have done that, it would have happened last year when he briefly demanded a trade to no effect.

Is it a lack of faith in Gamel
Or too much faith in Casey McGehee?
Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.
That doesn't explain today's decision...
… which I’m sure Macha would pin on Lilly being a lefty, regardless of Gamel’s positive numbers (small sample though it is) against lefties since he’s been up.
I haven’t been bitching too much about it to date because it’s hard to argue with the decision to play McGehee when he’s been producing the way he has. Obviously the Bill Hall sighting set me off…

Not to steal roguejim's gig but...
if all you’re looking for is another utility infielder to play some more infield-by-committee this season, Heether’s probably your guy. He’s right-handed, too, so if they’re dead-set on platooning Gamel they might as well have Heether as the short-ended side than Hall’s carcass.

not as much as the tune

wasn't a must have series
but certianly losing 3 of 4 not ideal……long way to go still but concerned as the cubs do get healthier, the cards aren’t going anywhere and the starters for our beloved crew are so up and down and really few trading partners
On the road in Wrigley a split was a realistic hope...
… but more than that would have taken a great deal of luck. The split was there to be had, but they blew game 2. It’s as simple as that. Obviously the Cubs outplayed them in games 1 and 4.

I'm shocked, shocked, to find there is gambling going on in this establishment.
The only people who didn’t see that coming were Hall, Macha and Hall’s immediate family. He had a couple of nice defensive plays, but at the plate he’s just awful.
