Melvin Strikes Back
Yikes.
I'd say Melvin was backtocali if it weren't for their differing views of draft-eligible talent.
Edit by TheJay:
"I'll be glad to have Ryan help if he wants to. I'll give him a badge and he can be my deputy. I don't know his motivation for saying it. It demoralizes the people in the organization at a time when we should be pulling together. It puts a bad taste in our mouths. That's a pretty strong statement."

Tom H.'s entry..
… had even more quotes from Melvin that bit just as hard.
"I didn’t hear our pitchers complaining when we lost a 1-0 game (to New York last week) or the 2-1 game in 10 innings in Chicago.
"They didn’t say the hitters weren’t doing their job. He’s hitting in front of one of the best hitters (Prince Fielder) in the game."
Ouch.

Limping in to the break
that’s just what we need, our best hitter and our GM bickering at eachother in the media
"That's not a weird stat. Rickie is a run-scorer," Yost said. "It doesn't matter. It doesn't matter," Yost told reporters. "See, you guys have no concept. He's a run-scorer. So there's nothing weird about it. That's what he does."

It's Melvin's own fault
Braun is right and everyone in the baseball world knew that Brewers’ pitching was going to be a major issue this year. They made a ridiculous offer to CC in the off-season but then did nothing else…unless you count Looper as doing something. They company line about CC being a special case was completely ridiculous.
They needed to add pitchers in the off-season and everyone knew it. Braun is frustrated and who can blame him. Yeah, they lost a couple of low scoring games but that’s going to happen. For the most part the offense has been fine. The pitching hasn’t.

to be fair
Braun never said that Melvin and the front office weren’t doing their jobs. He fully acknowledged that there aren’t a lot of starting pitchers available.
Braun just said what everyone else is thinking. With that being said- it would be nice if Braun developed a little bit of a filter when talking to the media.

I'm sure the entire team was thinking it
But nobody else said it. If he wanted his opinion to be heard, he should have gone to Doug or Gord personally and gave them his thoughts. That being said, Doug M. shouldn’t have been so candid with TH. As somebody stated previously, he should have called Braun into his office and had a one on one meeting about media relations.

How exactly do you propose they do it?
Who do they trade? They don’t really have the money to bring someone on right now. Signing Looper was a good move considering what we had. The Gallardo/Parra/Bush/Looper/Suppan rotation was fairly decent in theory – remember a lot of people thought this would be Parra’s breakout year – but their problem is that they don’t have a good option for backup starter.

I really don’t think any of us are in a position to sit here and call our front office ridiculous. There’s really not a whole lot of reliable talent out there and you have to remember, so many teams are fighting for playoff spots this year, nobody’s willing to lie down and become a seller.
I’ve spoken with Doug Melvin several times – so call me biased if you wish – but the man knows baseball and knows what he is doing. We added one starting pitcher in the off-season and honestly the move or lack of moves has worked for more wins than losses.
I like Braun and his flare on the field but that’s where it needs to stay. Teammates probably look up to Braun more than he realizes and doesn’t understand the negative impact of this type of speech in the press. He’s gotta learn to take his frustration out on the field and just take care of what he can control. Hopefully he’ll have a long career and have a chance at plenty of championships.

As another huge fan of #8 and the ‘Stache, I think it would’ve been in the best interests for all parties involved to keep this in house. Yeah, Braun was saying what a lot of us were thinking, but it prolly wasn’t the best idea to air this in the media.

I questions the timing
If regard to the Braun thing…he has a point, to a degree, but I question the timing. Soup pitched much better, Looper pitched well enough, Burns pitched great in his last start, Yoga was being his usual ace self in his last start. What more does Braun want? Yeah, Burns didn’t pitch well that day and McClung blew up again in his start. I get that. But you’re talking about two guys who just got into the rotation under very un-ideal circumstances, and his comments HAD to have been aimed at them, given the timing. As for Burns, I think he’s done pretty well given the circumstances. He’s bound to have a bad game, but at least he doesn’t seem to be the emotional rollercoaster that McClung & Parra are. This guy also makes the case that the pitching hasn’t been as bad as it seems either: http://community.sportsbubbler.com/blogs/the_junkball_blues/archive/2009/07/02/series-preview-ken-macha-s-situational-extravaganza-sweet-lou-s-school-of-etiquette.aspx (sorry, don’t know how to post links properly here)

Post-Hoc
The problem I have with the Prince/Parra snit is that it’s a post-hoc logical fallacy to say that it caused them to win more games. Certainly not with enough confidence to say that players need to start calling each other out in the media to get fired up. I suppose you could ask the players if Prince going after Parra made them see the ball better, or the pitchers able to locate their fastball better. But I really doubt the two are in any way related.

DM on the way out?
Braun smarting off about the GM isn’t probably the wisest thing to do, but with that said, it’s not good to have the GM strike back at the player. DM should have risen above and not commented on it.
So if you are MA, who’s side do you choose? The future of the franchise, or your GM? Perhaps this is the beginning of a backlash of DM.
DM has soured on me, so perhaps I’m looking through not rosey glasses. Thoughts?

Braun probaly shouldn’t have said what he said, but he’s ultimately payed to play the game (which he does very well). On the other hand, a large portion of Melvin’s job is to consider the media and player relations.
Melvin’s the one who ends up looking undisciplined and reactionary here, if you ask me.

Braun
He was just stating the obvious that we need pitching. It is something we have needed going into spring training. The middle of the rotation have been up and down all season long. We are still looking for a solid starter since Parra was sent back down to the minors. Burns is doing okay but, notgreat with the talent the Crew has overall.

Braun for Player-Coach
During the offseason, I mentioned several times that they should just make Braun a player-coach, and that was before he decided that he liked the sound of his voice. Every time he says anything, my initial thought is “hey, that sounds like something a manager would say”. And nobody would think twice about it, because its normal for a manager to say “our pitching wasn’t good enough today”.
So there you go, your deputy badge.

If the Brewers go 4-2 or 5-1 on this homestand everything will be forgotten. These things pop up every year on teams when they have a bad streatch. It is a long season and competative people get frustrated and need to vent.
I have complete confidence in the professionallism of both Melvin and Braun to do their jobs and work to get this team back to the play-offs.

Emotional problems?
He sees something wrong with the team that’s going to hold them back from performing similarly to last year and he has emotional problems?
Like I said before, if the press starts asking him about how the team is doing – which they do because he is a prominent player – is he supposed to just say that he’s not going to talk about something? When you work for someone, whether it is a team or a retail store or anything else, you end up being an ambassador for that corporation. As such, he doesn’t really have the ability to turn down reporters when they ask such things. It could upset the fans if he doesn’t seem friendly and knowledgeable about the team. I would rather have a player who takes interest in the management side of the team and expresses that when asked than someone who doesn’t seem to know or care what’s going on.
Since this is a Brewers blog, I see no problem in talking about this issue.

Losing, Rickie,
Sucks… My expectations were not high going into the season with our SP rotation… It’s frustrating as a fan and player when you’re right in the thick of things right now..but realistically…still so far away from a WS run.. I don’t see anything out there, realistically, attainable like a CC/ect that’s going to get us to the WS this yr….Playoff’s.. probably..so. I think it’s best we just ride out the season as is for the most part and not waste trading chips.. Next yr and the small window we have left with Prince is the time to go for it all I think.. Last yr was nice..we made the playoffs…Next yr and more so the following (bye 20+million for suppan and Hall) yr/s is when the brass,,,err,,,Braun need to go all in for a WS run. I’m not saying go all in as to cripple the future..Butttt.
