Game Thread #83: Cardinals (45-39) at Brewers (43-39)
St. Louis Cardinals at Milwaukee Brewers, Jul 7, 2009 7:05 PM CDT
Y'know what's even better than getting to untuck your shirt after a victory? Untucking your shirt after a victory that brings you back into a tie for the NL Central lead. The Brewers have a chance to do that tonight as Yovani Gallardo takes on Adam Wainwright.
Gallardo is 3-3 since June 1, but hasn't really deserved any of those three losses. He's posted a 2.04 ERA over that stretch and struck out 49 batters in 39.2 innings. He fanned a career high 12 in his last start, but took a 1-0 loss. If there's a downside to Gallardo's recent performance, it's that he's throwing a ton of pitches: 114 in his last start, and 110, 105, 116, 107 and 118 in the five starts before it. It's possible efficiency is the only thing that's missing from his game.
Adam Wainwright (8-5, 3.32) hopes to continue his domination of the Brewers in 2009. Wainwright is 1-1 against the Crew in two starts, but has allowed just two earned runs and struck out 16 in 15 innings. Wainwright also ran into some tough luck his last time out (against the Giants): He pitched nine innings, allowed just one run and struck out 12 but received a no-decision.
Here's today's lineup, via Tom H.:
2B Craig Counsell
SS J.J. Hardy
LF Ryan Braun
1B Prince Fielder
3B Casey McGehee
CF Mike Cameron
RF Corey Hart
C Jason Kendall
RHP Yovani Gallardo
Tom also notes that the Brewers won't see Mark DeRosa in this series, as the Cardinals placed him on the DL today with a wrist sprain.
In the bullpen:
Chris Narveson pitched one inning (24 pitches) on Sunday.
Chris Smith pitched 1 inning (11 pitches) on Sunday.
Todd Coffey pitched one inning (10 pitches) on Sunday.
Mark DiFelice pitched .1 inning (5 pitches) on Sunday.
Carlos Villanueva has not pitched since Saturday.
Mitch Stetter has not pitched since Friday.
Trevor Hoffman has not pitched since Monday, June 29.
Big game tonight, folks. Tuesday's Game Thread is now open.

Nowhere to put it, but...
…some douchelord commenter on MLB Trade Rumors thinks that we should deal Hardy, Hart, Gamel, Parra, Cain and another pitcher for Roy Halladay.
So there – I’ll help kick off this game thread with a hearty laugh.
Not to beat a dead horse, but....
Would Parra, Escobar, and perhaps Cain be enough for Halladay? Or too much?
Maybe we can convince J.P. that ole’ Billy Hall is the solution to their problems. Heh.
How far will this one fly?

Dempster on DL after fall breaks toe
Dempster was hopping over the dugout railing to go on the field and celebrate Sunday’s victory over the Milwaukee Brewers when he caught his back leg on the railing and landed hard, injuring his toe. An X-ray taken Tuesday revealed the non-displaced fracture.
I know its not funny he’s injured but…

Semi-related note.
The Brewer organization, fair or unfair, obviously doesn’t think much of Mike Rivera. A relatively good defensive catcher, Paul Phillips, crossed waivers and went unclaimed this week when the Rockies DFA’d him. If the Brewers don’t feel Rivera is good enough to merit any level of playing time, and it’s obvious they do, then why not try someone else?

Scouting reports on Josh Prince’s D were mixed. Some said he was slick, others said he might not stay at short. I’m working on some defense numbers for college, and he was dead-on average relative to NCAA in ‘09. Given that the vast majority of those shortstops will never play a pro game, that’s not a great sign.
Then again, it’s a small sample size, so who knows.

Thankfully, he'll steal 1000 bases
