Game Thread #84: Cardinals (46-39) at Brewers (43-40)

St. Louis Cardinals at Milwaukee Brewers, Jul 8, 2009 7:05 PM CDT

Current Series

Cardinals lead the series 1-0

Tue 07/07 WP: Adam Wainwright ( - )
LP: Yovani Gallardo ( - )
0 - 5 loss
Thu 07/09 1:05 PM CDT

Ok, now it's time to even the series.

Star-divide

Jeff Suppan (5-6, 4.60) faces his favorite opponent tonight. Suppan is 7-3 with a 3.31 ERA in his career against the Cardinals, his second lowest ERA against any opponent:

Opponent IP ERA
Milwaukee 128.2 3.29
St. Louis 87 3.31
Washington 62.1 3.32

With that said, Suppan got shelled his last time out against the Cardinals, allowing five runs on seven hits in just 3.2 innings. Suppan allowed three home runs during that start, but has only allowed one in the 40.2 IP since then. Of course, now that I've mentioned it he'll give up several home runs in the first inning.

Suppan will face Todd Wellemeyer (7-7, 5.44), who is 1-1 against the Brewers with a 4.91 ERA in 2009. He allows a lot of baserunners, and is among the NL leaders in hits (4th) and earned runs (2nd). He had a very good outing last time out, allowing just two runs and striking out six in 7.1 innings, and was efficient while doing so, throwing just 99 pitches. Prior to that, he had averaged slightly less than 5.1 innings and posted a 6.32 ERA in his previous ten starts.

If you're a conspiracy theorist, you can go to town with the fact that Corey Hart isn't in the lineup tonight (h/t JS):

2B Craig Counsell
SS J.J. Hardy
LF Ryan Braun
1B Prince Fielder
RF Frank Catalanotto
CF Mike Cameron
3B Mat Gamel
C Jason Kendall
RHP Jeff Suppan

Meanwhile, Trevor Hoffman is hoping not to spend his ninth consecutive day collecting dust in the bullpen:

Seth McClung pitched 1.1 innings (27 pitches) last night.
Carlos Villanueva pitched one inning (16 pitches) last night.
Chris Smith pitched 1 inning (14 pitches) last night.
Chris Narveson pitched .2 innings (22 pitches) last night.
Todd Coffey last pitched on Sunday.
Mark DiFelice last pitched on Sunday.
Mitch Stetter has not pitched since Friday.
Trevor Hoffman has not pitched since the last time you felt optimistic about the Brewers Monday, June 29.

Wednesday's Game Thread is now open.
