Ran into Doug Melvin Last Night at Miller Park

As the final firework turned to smoke following Trevor Hoffman's escape last evening, I attempted to use the video feature on my new phone in order to share the moment with my 5 year old son. Unfortunately, I am too stupid to operate modern technology and after realizing this, I had to hustle to catch up to my buddies, already high-stepping down the stairwell.

I strolled briskly past the suite level exit and found myself shoulder to shoulder with an exiting Doug Melvin. Not one to over-think a situation, I immediately bumped my shoulder into his and said: "Great game, big win tonight, sir." His face, sullen and tired, did not brighten. His reply was: "None of them are easy." He appeared preoccupied and none too excited for this fan interaction opportunity, but he was polite nonetheless. I threw in: "Thanks for what you do here. We've waited a long time for a winner. We enjoy every game." He mumbled something unintelligible and I surged ahead to catch up with my friends.

I feel like I could have done better with my chance meeting. For the record I was sober as Malcolm X, so I cannot claim lack of lucidity. I am normally prone to absurd faux pas and socially inappropriate comments, so my polite nature can only be explained by my love for the Brewers and the fact that, at age 34, I had waited for the full 26 years for success. I guess I am giving Melvin a free pass for a year or two out of desperate graditude for the CC pick up and the Playoff appearance.

you could do what my brother did, last year in the playoffs

Pointed right at him when we walked by and screamed

“BEST GM IN BASEBALL”

The designated hitter rule is like letting someone else take Wilt Chamberlain's free throws.

So you are a liar?

hehe..

When I saw DM/JackZ/Ash and a few others I assume to be scouts last year I just nodded my head. I assume every tom dick and harry wants to talk to them, so I just gave them “I know who you are” nod.

Yeah same here

Although, during the last playoff game my brother was wearing a Braun jersey and Jack Z ran into us, stopped my brother, and asked if he was going to hit two homeruns that days. It was a nice moment

Or

What I would want to say and what I actually would say are two different things

Being the polite, ever tactful person that I am, I would probably say something like what you wrote in your second paragraph. I would want to say something like option 3 in the poll.

"my goodness"

I'd say what you said too.

Whether you agree wholeheartedly with his moves or dislike them entirely, there’s no reason to be anything less than respectful in that venue. Especially after a win.

"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."

I went with other

Doug, great stache man. Anyway, about this Halladay trade. I know we need a pitcher, but with Halladay coming on the market, how does this affect the cost of say… a Javy Vasquez? I think it would be prudent to snatch him up at .80 on the buck now that he’s no longer the premier guy. Thoughts?

"That's not a weird stat. Rickie is a run-scorer," Yost said. "It doesn't matter. It doesn't matter," Yost told reporters. "See, you guys have no concept. He's a run-scorer. So there's nothing weird about it. That's what he does."

Sure, let's get Vasquez as he wilts in the light of Halladay

Much like the less popular, but equally attractive girl at the dance, one must jump at the chance, lest the opportunity slip away. That sounds like a quote, but it’s really just my latest BS.

I wouldn't start with a question, so as not to force him to reply if he's not in the mood.

Hi Doug! Hey, tell Gord to tweet more often, please. I love the info. Especially when you guys tour the minors — it’d be great to hear his thoughts on prospects he’s seeing. Man, Scarpetta was dealing last night, eh?

"So, how'd that trade for Johnny Estrada work out?"

Nothing endears you to people like pointing out the mistakes they’ve made.

Great reference, but it's more like

“My name is Doug Davis. You traded me for Johnny Estrada. Have fun storming the playoffs, boys! (It’ll take a miracle….)”

I'm a big fan of the Canadian healthcare system, Doug. What do you think?

I know, I know. I just wanted to interject that. Just this one time…..;-)

Thanks for FINALLY firing Yost and bringing in Macha.

Tell him he needs to speak to Macha about batting Jason Kendall leadoff. That’s just weird.

I love it

He’s not going to really get a lot of hits in other spots on the lineup. It is pretty dang goofy though.

so...

because he’s not going to get many hits elsewhere

he should get batted in the order where he has more PAs than anyone else on the season?
