Tuesday's Frosty Mug has gone fishin'.
Morning everyone,
With the Brewer off day yesterday, I decided to take a couple days and head up north to see if I can catch a musky this summer. The Mug is off today, but I'll be back late tonight and there will be a delayed Mug tomorrow (I have a doctor's appointment in the morning).
So, enjoy the day, and post whatever you're reading in the comments so others can enjoy it too. Thanks!
KL

Doug Melvin was on the radio this morning, and I learned something really interesting about waivers
He said if a player is claimed on waivers, he will only know which player was claimed. He will not know which team put in the claim.
Cards Announcers On Gamel's First Career HR, ""That’s all they need is another home run hitter".
But he has to learn eventually, right?
Because he can work out a trade with the team that put in the claim.
That's what I found strange. I'm waiting for them to post the audio of the interview
Maybe he just knows who put a claim in once the waiver period is over. He was talking about JJ Hardy. He said that he hadn’t been claimed yet. He went on to say that he didn’t have a whole lot of interest in trading Hardy right now. I’m guessing he wants to wait til the offseason, when he has more than 72 hours to work out a deal.

I would assume so
according to inside the majors
This combined with the fact that if a player is claimed you have just two business days to complete a trade with the claiming Club meant we waited until we were ready to move him before putting him on TR.
it’s further described here , so they obviously had to know who the claiming club was. perhaps melvin meant that when another team claims a player waived by a third team (e.g., the brewers are not at all involved), he doesn’t get any information. that makes sense to me.

I would guess that...
while the waiver period is open (2 business days, isn’t it?) on a player, the waiving team simply gets notified as soon as the first claim is put in, so they can plan ahead in the knowledge that the player won’t make it through waivers, but won’t be notified exactly which team put in that claim – because otherwise, you’d logically have to be notified for all further claims by teams with higher waiver priority, too. And that could be used to gauge exactly how much interest there is in your players, which probably isn’t quite what the waiver wire is supposed to be for.
In other words, I wouldn’t be surprised if the waiving team really only finds out at the end of the period who has actually been awarded the claim, and then gets that 48 hour period to make the pull-back/trade/let-him-leave decision.
Hmm, should've followed the ITM links first...
Given explicitly lists “gathering information about potentially interested teams” as a reason for waiving players, oh well. And I guess the waiver period itself is just one day after all.
Err, okay...
And in the second link he says it’s two days, hmm. I guess “A Club may only place seven players on waivers each day.” doesn’t mean you can only have seven players on the wire at a time, and it’s possible to waive seven players on one day and another seven on the next, even though the waiver period on the first seven hasn’t expired yet.
Yeah, speculation was that Alexis Rios was claimed last week and we still haven't found out who claimed him
E: George 4 (5, throw, throw, throw, throw).
Rios isn't really overpaid at all
That’s a pretty decent value. Remember the Lincecum/Rios trade rumor, though?
E: George 4 (5, throw, throw, throw, throw).
Link
He mentions that waivers have not yet been asked on JJ
as they’re waiting for him to put together another hot streak. I get the feeling that he’s going to wait til the offseason and trade him

some things to read...
(1) The Bleacher Report suggests the Pilots and their move to Milwaukee was one of baseball’s 50 ugliest incidents;
(2) Right Field Bleachers made an “Ode to Coffey”. As much as I love TC, it still doesn’t replace Peanut Butter Jelly Time;
(3) “Arrested Development” lives in different forms — there’s the movie talk, a documentary, and a new project featuring Will Arnett, Mitch Hurwitz, and Jim Vallely.
I found a neat story in the NYTimes
about a guy who writes The Baseball Autograph Collector’s Handbook.
"If lovin’ Braun is wrong, I want to be a repeat offender!"
RIP Nick Adenhart - Stop Drunk Driving
And here's a depressing one from the NYT Magazine ...
about the spike in teenagers having reconstructive arm surgery.
Speaking of injuries -- Jordan Zimmermann
Really sad that he is out up to 18 months with TJ surgery.
Have always pulled for him since he is a Wisconsin guy.
Hey you guys!
Garry Howard is going to have an online chat at 1pm today.

Crew's offense since July 1
Haudircourt wrote today about how things have changed since July 1. (http://www.jsonline.com/sports/brewers/52916572.html)
He really only addressed the pitching, which made me wonder about how the offense has performed during the same time period. My gut feeling was that the offense, currently ranked 5th in runs scored in the NL, has also underperformed. It seems like they’ve been shut out or held to 2 runs or less quite a bit. lately.
I ran the numbers and was shocked to find the Brewers were #1 in the NL in runs scored and runs per game since July 1. They’ve scored 187 runs (Dodgers are #2 at 184) and 5.19 RPG (Dodgers are #2 at 5.11) in July and August.
They’ve actually scored more per game than the first three months of the year when they were averaging 4.43.
Strike that. I had a problem with my spreadsheet.
They are 10th in runs scored since July 1. I’d delete my post if I could.
