Whoa.
I’m fine with the Castromove, but Hardy? Hopefully this means that Escobar starts at shortstop for a while, otherwise I don’t like that at all.
I'm JAMOOL and i approve this message
captainbok: What do you like the most about milwaukee
Jeff Suppan: Captain Bok, that is a great question. Does "Bok" mean Book of Knowledge? My favorite thing about Milwaukee are the Brewers.
Counsell at SS
Counsell doesn’t have the range that Escobar or Hardy have. Yes, he’ll hold his own periodically, but not as a full-time starter.
It's a bit surprising
Unless they are trying to raise the value of Escobar during the off season by showcasing his ML talent I don’t see how this helps the club to much. Hardys trade value just went from something to reclamation project.
I'm shocked at the Hrdy move
I thought they would’ve let him play out the rest of the season and try to figure things out. This will just do wonders to his trade value.

Mine too.

Agree completely
Sending down hardy now gives him the opportunity to re-tool his swing away from the lights and pressure of helping his (big league) team win. He’ll be back in September and if his AAA performance shows he’s back to career numbers, he’ll probably get some good playing time to either bolster his trade value or help the Brewers compete.
DFA status
so do they intend to assign him to AAA, but have him off the 40-man, or is he a free agent, or is someone potentially going to claim the guy (can they do so for league min? I forget)?

If I were any Brewer other than McGehee, Counsell, Fielder, Gallardo, Hoffman, and Fielder.
I would be scared shitless for my job.
As KL pointed out in the Mug
Salome has been hitting .306 since May.
"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"
I would like, for the rest of the season
To have McGehee play in RF, Gamel at third, Escobar at SS and Salome at catcher. I think that would be something I would like to watch, even if this season isn’t going anywhere.
Also, with everyone voicing concerns over CF next season if Cameron leaves, what if we move Braun or Hart to CF and play McGehee in RF or LF? Sure, it’s not great defense, but Gamel should be starting at third next season if the Brewers don’t change his position (which I don’t think they should) and McGehee has shown he should at least get the opportunity to start next season.
Hart in CF? Shudder. Braun in CF? Double Shudder.
They don’t know how the proper route to a ball at their CURRENT positions, much less a more difficult one.
I think Braun could manage in center field.
Of course, the defense would certainly be subpar, but we have nobody in our system to fit in there and this puts all of our best bats in, at least. The other option, if we want to keep McGehee in the lineup is Weeks in CF and McGehee at 2B. I know there are those here who have wanted Rickie in CF.
Am I the only one who thinks McGehee is not good at third?
Maybe it’s just his injury, but he’s running like a -40 UZR/150 there right now. And Gamel was really good in his time in the majors.
E: George 4 (5, throw, throw, throw, throw).
Well, then McGehee can play 1st.
Or maybe we can, instead of rewarding a guy for a (probably flukey) awesome year, trade him to a team that overvalues him like we did Hall?
I'd rather keep McGehee
He doesn’t suck and he can be a versatile player.
Why is everyone assuming we need to fill first base?
"If lovin’ Braun is wrong, I want to be a repeat offender!"

I feel that Prince is tradable, and if we're gonna get pitching, it ain't gonna be cheap, and it ain't gonna be via the FA market.
We need quality hitters to get anything done though
So why wouldn’t we trade prospects instead of dumping one of our two best hitters when we want to make the playoffs?

However, now I think we’re going to see a Sabathian offering from Mark A. to stay. (And probably a similar outbidding by the Yankees.)

Castro...FINALLY!!!
It’s not a coincidence that the Brewers are at the bottom of the entire league in ERA and the Texas Rangers are top 15 in era and are still in the hunt for a post season birth. MIKE MADDOX is the reason for the brewers struggles this year! Maddox is a awesome pitching coach and why the brewers didnt offer him the moon to stay on as pitching coach is beyond me? Anyway, Melvin dropped the ball big time in the off season by putting all his eggs in one basket with CC. The brewers were fooling themselves if they thought they had the arms to seriously compete for the division and beyond. I don’t know why JJ is down at AAA This season has been a waste and I’m really disappointed as I thought the Crew turned the corner last year. Peace to all you die hard Crew fans out there!!
I have the energy...
Are you honestly using the team ERA to compare the effectiveness of Maddux and Castro? That would only make sense if the teams had similar rotations (which they don’t). Not saying that Maddux isn’t a better pitching coach than Castro (he is), just saying that you’re comparing apples to automobiles.
How did Melvin “drop the ball big time by putting all his eggs in one basket with CC”? How has LaPorta been doing since he’s been playing with the Indians? Without CC, the Brewers would not have made the playoffs last season.
Funny enough, the starting rotation from the start of the season had the team in first place.
You really don’t know why JJ is down in Triple-A? Check out his stats.

Yeah.
So now that he’s been DFA’d, the Reds will give us Harang for him, right?
by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on Aug 12, 2009 12:57 PM CDT up reply actions
We can have Harang
If we’re willing to swallow his contract along with Hall’s. That’d be quite a mouthful, even for Mark A.
Hmmm
Harang is owed $14.5 million, plus the rest of this season. Bill Hall is owed $8.9 million, plus the rest of this season.
So, in a sense, the Brewer can get Harang for the rest of this season and next for only $6 million or so. (Harang’s stats here, and they’re not as bad as you might think.) I’d do that: it’s better than anything else we’d get for Hall. The Reds might do it, because not only have they seen him at his best, but it would save them $6 million paying a guy to play on another team.
In a sense, having Bill E. Hall is an asset, as no other team would be willing to take on Harang’s contract unless that had a bad one of their own. :)
Sooo…what am I missing?
"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"
If Bill E is released outright
Then other teams don’t actually have to give us anything for him. They only have to sign him as a Free Agent and pick up the league-minimum portion of his salary. I’m sure the Reds might be willing to take a shot with him for roughly $400K. Harang has reportedly cleared waivers (he hasn’t been released), so he could be traded to anyone willing to pay his full contract for the rest of 2009 and all of 2010. So if the Crew somehow traded for him, they could potentially be paying all of Bill E’s salary + all of Harang’s salary.
As pointed out below, though
It’s not currently clear whether he’s going to be released outright or exactly what the deal is.
Bill Hall?
Adam McC says he was DFA’ed.
I guess I’m confused: unless Harang is traded, the Reds are on the hook for all of Harang’s salary minus the league minimum if he signs elsewhere. Unless Hall is traded, we’re on the hook for all of Hall’s salary minus the league minimum if he signs elsewhere. Both Harang and Hall can be traded.
I think you’re trying to tell me something is wrong with my logic, but I’m not sure what that is.
"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"
Harang wasn't designated for assignment though, right?
So the Reds will either trade him or keep him, they don’t have to release him. The Brewers will have to trade or release Hall in 10 days.
Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.
Ohhh, maybe that's the difference
ok, that makes sense.
"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"
That's the key
Harang cleared waivers; he wasn’t DFA-ed. The Reds can trade Harang in a salary dump, or keep him if they want to. We have to do something with Bill E – either trade (though who’d want him for his current salary?) or release him.
Or attempt to outright him to the minors...
It’s too late here for me to remember which exception applies, but Hall could presumably reject that assignment to become a FA and still keep his contracted earnings in place.
Another puss who hides behind crap.
Designated for assignment
I don’t think Hall has actually be released yet (conflicting reports).
From what I’ve read, he’s been DFAed, which means that within 10 days, the Brewers either have to put him on waivers, trade him or release him.
It's sad
In the midst of our freefall, it’s the players on offense we’re reshuffling. Although Hardy’s having a bad bad season, he didn’t give up 22 hits last night.
"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"
they didn't score 14 to win the game
hence the shakeup!

I have to think there will be a pitching-related move at some point today
E: George 4 (5, throw, throw, throw, throw).
Only one person can halp us now
Brooks Kieschnick, you’re our only hope!
"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"
I'm honestly shocked that they sent Hardy down.
I can’t se how this makes the team better. Even if we do get better production out of Escobar, I can’t see this helping his trade value.
Besides. The pitching is what’s wrong with this team, not it’s hitting.
Depends...
on what you think they are trying to accomplish by this move. Yes, it’s really not going to make an impact on the current season… but it will give them a chance to see if Escobar is ready to be the full-time starter next season.
Clearly the season is slipping away.
This could be one more swing for the fences, by shaking things up, but there could be another possibility. Everything they are doing is getting ready for 2010.
At some point you have to say about Hardy, he is what his numbers say he is, and frankly, not only is Escobar a better prospect, he is probably a better player….right now. Yeah, it hurts Hardy’s trade value, but despite all the projections and prognosticators, its also possible that he does not turn it around. At least decent numbers in AAA will look better than bad numbers in MLB (Think Clay Buccholz)
Castro didn’t have a lot to work with, but he didn’t really take anyone from bad to average either.
Hall is just a guy at this point. Hopefully things work out for him, Not so sure why they don’t just finish it off and bring up Salome and Gamel.
Agreed
We have little to no chance of making the playoffs this year. Why not start to focus on preparing for next year right now?

From the AP:
“He is owed $2,006,557 from the remainder of his $6.8 million salary this year, $8.4 million next season and a $500,000 buyout of a $9.25 million club option for 2011.”
Just got this email from TheJay:
These are almost certainly panic moves straight from the top.
Bourgeois was called up to replace Hall. Given they just signed Corey Patterson’s veteranosity and he is tearing the cover off the ball in Nashville, that’s nice to see.
Someone should really check on the health of Don Money. He’s lost his pitching coach and two regular players off a roster that was already short-handed. They could have a pretty weird lineup tonight. Not including Hardy, he currently has 10 position players, three of whom are catchers. I wonder if any of the Nashville pitchers are converted position players? :)

Awesome note about AAA
He should put all three catchers in the outfield for kicks and make Hall catch.
I must be reading Minor League splits wrong. If you put in Jason Bourgeois it looks like he’s played every game in the outfield and primarily in center field. I fail to see how that’s a “replacement” for Bill Hall.
Well right now he's been playing a lot in RF for Hart
So having another player who can play in the OF well is going to be needed for the next few weeks while Hart is out.

How does this hurt the Brewers chances? I don't get it.
All Melvin did was send down two underperforming players that didn’t have a right to be on the roster given their recent performance and their potential replacements. This is a move to make the Brewers more competitive this season and next season. The Brewers have a better team on paper now than they did last night. This is 100% good.
Glad they waited for the home stand to start.
The interest should bring several more thousand to the games, esp. if Escobar gets off to a good start. Cash to pay off Hall.
A mid-season fix is always fun, for a while anyway.
Melvin may look like a hero in all of this a month from now, but I agree it all came from “the limited partnership” at the top.

“If there’s anybody in the clubhouse that’s giving up, they shouldn’t be here.”
“Last night’s game was a stinker,” said Melvin. “That put me over the edge, I guess.” (edit: That’s totally reasonable, right?)
“All of these moves are performace bases. I look at myself and maybe I waited too long on some of these. I’m maybe more patient than most people. I try to ride these things out. When you don’t see progress, you’ve got to make moves.
“This isn’t to send a message to anybody else (on the team). This is all performance based.”
“I talked to J.J.,” said Melvin. “I told him he needs to go to Triple-A, relax and have some fun. Mentally, take a breather. That’s what Triple-A is for. Maybe he can find something mechanical with his swing.”

“It’s a prolonged slump that’s lasted four months for me, and I haven’t been able to slow it down,” Hardy said. “In the past, when I would have a few bad games in a row, I would get a day off to slow the game down and come back strong. It just hasn’t happened this year. A couple of days off will be nice, and then I’ll go down [to the Minors] and do what I need to do.”
“I don’t know — I’ve kind of been feeling it,” Hardy said. “I’ve been feeling like all of the coaches have been staring at me and watching everything I do. It’s been uncomfortable. But it still surprises me a little bit. I think three days off would have been all I needed, and I’ve been going out there every single day and doing what they’ve asked me to do.”
Hardy conceded that he never approached manager Ken Macha and asked for a break.
“Who am I to tell Macha what the lineup should be and who should be playing?” Hardy said. "They’ve been putting me out there every day and I’ve been trying my hardest. It’s not like I haven’t been trying. I like to think of it as the equivalent of a golfer who is a five- or six handicap and they’re going out there for four straight months shooting in the 100s and they can’t figure it out.
Hardy's acclimated to the midwest
Keep your head down, your mouth shut and do your job.
I guess that’s just a case of a manager not knowing his players well. One thing about Yost was that he always rested his players regardless of how much they wanted to play (of course, he wouldn’t bench players that wanted to play regardless of their ability).
Jason Kendall might not agree with this line:
One thing about Yost was that he always rested his players regardless of how much they wanted to play
Of course, it’s entirely true for Mike Rivera. No matter how bad he wanted to play, Yost sat him for months.
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
Okay, so one exception
But I remember Fielder being frustrated about being stuck on the bench a few games last year when Yost insisted he take a day off. Macha doesn’t appear to be a member of that camp.
Not knowing the players well...
Agreed, but then again, this is Macha’s first season with the Brewers. Of course, if you’re going to blame Macha, why not the rest of the coaching staff… including Sveum who IS familiar with all the players.
That's why he's a winner.
"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"
You know, when you put it that way...
First words of advice to Gallardo: “You know how we brought in Jeff Suppan to be a veteran presence, and to mentor young pitchers? Don’t listen to him! Don’t even stand next to him.”
I don't get why everybody's so worked up about this stuff
The big news of the day is that Cleveland claimed Swindle.
Also, cheese.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Swindle! Your 55 mph curveball will never grace our diamond again!
Well, except perhaps against us. He’s now Evil Swindle.
Two teams since his release...
He went from the Brewers to the Rays and now to the Indians. I don’t even think he had a chance to put on his jersey with the Rays minor league affiliate before being waived.
