Your 2010 Starting Lineup

Imagine you're DM, and given that you've just demoted JJ Hardy, DFA'd Bill Hall, and are otherwise stuck with a lackluster starting rotation, things are looking grim for the rest of the season.  Within reason, and given the current market of FA's and tradepool, how do you see the 2010 opening day lineup appearing?

In my defense, I don't have the money considerations the real 'Stache does.

Star-divide

Stop me if you've heard this one before:

C:   Mike Rivera

1B: Prince Fielder

2B: Rickie Weeks

SS: Alcides Escobar

3B: Casey McGehee

LF: Corey Hart

CF: Jason Bourgeois

RF: Ryan Braun

I won't even get into pitching because that is far too nebulous.  I would be willing to give up Mat Gamel and a PTBNL for Tim Matt Cain, though.

I don't know why you'd swap Braun and Hart

Bourgeois is not very good, I’d much prefer to put Gerut in there if we’re going to speculate. I’m not at all convinced of Casey McGehee at third— not because I don’t think he can hit, but because he’s been injured and he has not played very well on defense there. If you’re not trading Gamel he needs to be in the starting lineup at third. C-Mac is a really good backup plan and fill-in but I don’t really want him in a starting role with no insurance. Oh, and planning on Rivera at catcher doesn’t seem too wise to me, I don’t know if he’d hit any better than Kendall.

E: George 4 (5, throw, throw, throw, throw).

Again, this is right.

We need a center fielder, don’t really see an internal option. Personally I’d love to have Weeks in center and let McGehee play 2nd, but I know that’s not gonna happen.

by Mykenk on Aug 12, 2009 1:18 PM CDT up reply actions

Honestly i swapped the two because i couldn't think of any other ready internal options for LF

because i feel that braun would make a welcome addition to RF, but i’m not as convinced about hart in CF. hence, keeping hart in the OF, but over in left.

also i imagined that SOMEONE is gonna have to get dealt to get any kind of improvement in pitching, and i figured gamel would command the most in trade value for that.

Braun needs to stay in right

There’s really no point in disorienting two players by swapping positions. What are your plans for Counsell, if he sticks around? Bench player?

i was giving that some thought, and honestly i can't speculate with any great certainty

mostly because i figured the knee ailment that counsell has had all year would most likely be dealt with in the off season, and who knows if he’d want to come back after that. if he would, i’d love to see him stay on in a utility role.

Gamel

I don’t think I’d give up Gamel and a PTBNL for Tim Cain.

Oh Crap

Tim Cain is handicapped. Just bought my ticket to hell.

yikes, don't know what i was thinking

though i mean, i’d still prefer tim cain over looper.

Tim Cain

This was a rumor in the last offseason

San Fransisco rejected a trade offer from Milwaukee of Prince Fielder for Matt Cain. If this is true, there is no way they would accept Matt Gamel for Matt Cain and especially Tim Lincencum. I’d put Matt Gamel in the OF with either him or Corey Hart in CF. I’d leave Braun in LF as he has performed so well there that I wouldn’t want to take him from that spot. No, McGehee is not a good infielder. You could test him in the outfield or hope that his fielding improves at 3B. That is of course if he remains consistent at the plate. JJ Hardy for sure should be traded for a new quality pitcher along with other prospects.

by Jabooty on Aug 14, 2009 2:02 PM CDT up reply actions

Mat Gamel :)

Also, your wording is a bit confusing, but if you are suggesting that Hardy could get the Brewers a quality pitcher and prospects, theres probably no way. Maybe a decent pitcher, but Hardys trade value has kind of fallen off a cliff this season.

C: Salome
1B: Fielder
2B: Weeks
SS: Esky
3B: Gamel
LF: Braun
CF: Gerut
RF: Hart

McGehee, Counsell, Rivera, Bourgeois and a cheap FA OF on the bench.

Pitching…who knows?

by warwick5s on Aug 12, 2009 1:19 PM CDT reply actions

Yeah pretty much

The only thing is Salome’s D, Money said he might not be ready to start next year at one point.

E: George 4 (5, throw, throw, throw, throw).

by Jordan M on Aug 12, 2009 1:20 PM CDT up reply actions

and that's why i was thinking to keep him off the starting lineup

otherwise i’d love to see salome in the bigs.

He might be in the majors anyway

Kendall or some other defensively minded vet will start while showing backup Angel the ropes. There is the added benefit of Angel learning what it’s like to be a big leaguer or whatever the going phrase is these days.

C-Salome
1B- Prince

3B – Gamel
LF – Braun
CF – Endy Chavez/1 year contract
RF – Hart
Bench – Rivera
Bench – McGehee
Bench – Gerut
Bench – Bourgeois
Bench – Counsell

SP – Gallardo
SP – Parra
SP – Suppan
SP – Bush
SP – Brian Bannister (for Hardy, if Hardy hasn’t already been traded)

by NoahJ on Aug 12, 2009 1:22 PM CDT reply actions

Fantastic defense.

Also there are no valid CF free agents that milwaukee could sign otherwise. I would like to see Cameron re-sign, but my bet is he goes elsewhere. Out of any outfield free agents, I would want Carl Crawford, but he will be way too expensive for the brewers. I would sign Chavez to a one year contract for his defensive value and wait for Cain or another prospect to be ready in 2011.

by NoahJ on Aug 12, 2009 1:51 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't think you appreciate that Endy Chavez is actually a pretty good player.

Defense matters. Gerut and Chavez could be a pretty good CF tandem.

Catalanotto

Do you think Catalanoto could play center? I’m really not crazy about Gerut

by zsxander567 on Aug 12, 2009 1:23 PM CDT reply actions

Oh goodness no

Gerut’s almost certainly a better hitter, and Catalanatto is pretty much a first basemen/occasional corner outfielder with little pop.

E: George 4 (5, throw, throw, throw, throw).

by Jordan M on Aug 12, 2009 1:29 PM CDT up reply actions

Gerut

I suppose a little more faith in his numbers is a slightly better approach to next year huh?

Easy

C: Salome
1B: Gamel
2B: Ricky
SS: Escobar
3B: McGehee
LF: Braun
CF: I agree with the Endy Chavez for a year remark, or Cam one more time
RF: Randy Winn
BN: Counsell
BN: Cattalanato
BN: Rivera
BN: Bourgeois
BN: Added Infield Utility man

So, starting pitching I’m not sure about, but as you see here we are missing 3 (before today) every day players from our lineup. Fielder, Hardy and Hart. Fielder, I would love to see him around for years to come, but if that isn’t a possibility his trade value will be amazing after this year! Over .300, 30+ HR’s and over 100 RBI’s with a great if not amazing OPS. If we want something big for him, now’s the time to do it, I can bet that Boston would be pretty big takers and we could get someone really big for him, like a Bucholz who would probably look even better in the NL. Hardy and Hart together should be able to net you a number 3 maybe a low end number 2 pitcher. Now that moves two of Bush, Looper or Suppan into the bullpen and I;m guessing that we won’t try and renew Looper’s contract. /so /bush in the pen, Suppan in the 5th spot behing two mystery people YoGa and Parra, mainly because Suppan is paid more and we all know how Melvin thinks on that end.

by Brewers on Aug 12, 2009 1:44 PM CDT reply actions

anything other than 1B: Fielder is an immediate disqualification IMO

If Gamel and McGehee are in the infield together it means that Weeks is in the outfield or on another team.

I'm thinking Gamel should be 3B and McGehee should be the utility man

hold on to Prince as long as possible. Pitching can only get you so far. Braun can’t carry the offense by himself.

mostly agree

i think lackey will be too expensive until suppan comes off the books, but i would be in favor of incentive-laden deals with bedard or duchscherererer.

by Capt Science on Aug 12, 2009 1:58 PM CDT up reply actions

i would have agreed with bedard

until these recent shoulder scares and his inability to pitch, which would put us right where we are today.

What treatment? I’m all for giving him more playing time. The “Hall treatment” would mean giving him a big multi-year deal… which I don’t think anyone has mentioned.

Please no more Hart

Corey Hart is really streak, and is only kinda ok when he is hot. When he is cold we might as well have Gerut out there.

Trade Corey whatever pitching we can get, let Gamel play LF and Braun RF.

I’m excited to see what Bourgeois can do in CF while hes up.
