Game Thread #113: Padres (48-66) at Brewers (55-57)
San Diego Padres at Milwaukee Brewers, Aug 12, 2009 7:05 PM CDT
Well, tonight's game has gotten a lot more interesting. It won't be the 2009 starting debut of Alcides Escobar, but it will be the first game since Billy Castro, Bill Hall and J.J. Hardy were sent packing, and it can't possibly be worse than Snoop Dogg on Sportscenter...right?
Follow the jump for tonight's pitching matchup, lineup and conversation on tonight's game!
Kevin Correia (7-9, 4.52) is starting opposite Carlos Villanueva for the second time in two weeks, and came out on the short end of the stick last time, allowing three runs on two hits and three walks in 6.1 innings. Correia has posted a 2.45 ERA over his last three starts but is just 1-1 in that time. Felipe Lopez has more plate appearances against Correia than any other two Brewers, but has hit just .182/.280/.227 in 26 PAs. Ryan Braun (.300/.300/.700) and Mike Cameron (.286/.375/.714) are among the Brewers who have had some success against him.
Carlos Villanueva (2-9, 6.05) had his best outing of the season against Correia two starts ago, pitching five scoreless innings despite allowing six baserunners. Villy has lost his last six decisions, including his last time out, and has posted a 7.39 ERA over 35.1 innings since his last win. New pitching coach Chris Bosio had just a few hours this afternoon to figure out what's wrong with Villanueva and get him ready for tonight.
Alcides Escobar and Jason Bourgeois both joined the team today, and could make their 2009 debuts tonight, but won't be starting: (h/t Tyler Barnes)
Felipe Lopez 2B
Craig Counsell SS
Ryan Braun LF
Prince Fielder 1B
Mike Cameron CF
Casey McGehee 3B
Frank Catalanotto RF
Jason Kendall C
Carlos Villanueva P
And in the bullpen:
Jesus Colome pitched 1.2 innings (23 pitches) last night before being removed with a bruised pinky finger.
Mark DiFelice pitched .2 innings (22 pitches) last night.
David Weathers pitched one inning (17 pitches) last night.
Mitch Stetter faced two batters (14 pitches) last night.
Claudio Vargas pitched .1 innings (3 pitches) last night.
Todd Coffey pitched .1 innings (2 pitches) last night.
Trevor Hoffman has not pitched since Thursday.
Enjoy the game!

Bourgeois is #16, Escobar #21, Brewers.com has Bosio at #43
Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.
Bosio is also our #43 pitching prospect.
I’m kidding, of course. He rates much better than that.
Another puss who hides behind crap.
Shortstop
Is there anyone on the team right this second who can play shortstop other than Counsell?
I think now would be a good time for Counsell to demand a $1 million raise. =)

SS options...
Escobar is there tonight, but it would probably be a little much to ask him to start right away. He’ll most likely be in the lineup tomorrow.
As far as options tonight besides Escobar…
Lopez has played SS before… as recently as last season.
Bourgeois played 119 games in the minors at SS… but not since 2006.
McGehee played 2 games in the minors at SS… but not since 2006.
Lopez
I’m kind of surprised he’s starting, given his lackluster effort in the field last night and all the shake-ups today.

Not many options
They don’t have too many options with Counsell playing SS and McGehee playing 3B. Their only option would be Iribarren.
As far as Lopez’s fielding last night… could it be he’s still being hampered by hamstring problems?
Start Iribarren
One game won’t kill the team, and why not see what Iribarren’s got?
Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.
Macha shot down the hamstring thing pretty quick last night

I don't think we're ever going to see what Iribarren's got
They don’t seem to see him as any more than a bench player. Much like they how they saw TGJ.
"my goodness"
by BrewHaHeather on Aug 12, 2009 7:14 PM CDT up reply actions
I know
But he’s been able to get on base throughout the minors, so I figure it can’t hurt to let him play a little bit. He doesn’t have any power and probably won’t hit that well, but I thought the same of Casey McGehee so what do I know.
Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.
Iribarren
I agree. For whatever reason, Iribarren hasn’t gotten any chances to prove he’s starter material. Even after Weeks went onto the DL, they didn’t even give him a shot on a part-time basis. Granted, none of us are MLB scouts or watch him on a regular basis, so maybe they know more than we do?
That being said, Lopez is still hitting well and getting on base, so even without the hustle, Lopez is probably a better option than Iribarren.
50 games left...
Where were the Brewers 50 games ago? I mean, I thing they were doing pretty well 50 games ago. So a lot can happen in 50 games. So maybe, maybe something like the moves today can help the Brewers reverse the damage.

The insanely high pitch counts on this team I think can be partially attributed to Castro. It’s definitely an approach and preparation thing that was not working.

Right, but you get my point, right?
It seems like, at a point where no one in the bullpen is exceptionally effective, Macha is pulling effective relievers too early lately, with my extended sample size being the last two games.

I'm not so sure.
He’s certainly an upgrade by I don’t think we’re Doug Davis away from a playoff appearance and I don’t want to give up prospects for a 6 week rental that doesn’t get us into October.

As long as it is a non-prospect prospect, I’m fine with it, as it beats throwing out Burns or whoever
Me too.
But I’m not sure why they’d give up Davis for that when they can keep him and get the compensatory picks when he leaves in free agency three months from now.

Our expected winning percentage is something like

I don't hope he gets hit by a car
I do hope he doesn’t still consider himself the best third baseman in the league, and being the best third baseman DFA’d doesn’t really have a ring to it
hey
i was almost hit by a car (this) night (just before the game started) moving around 40 mph.
welcome to PA.
fortunately, the driver elected to hit the car in front of him attempting to make a left turn rather than either a) swerve into oncoming traffic or b) swerve into me and my wife who were walking on the shoulder of the road.
I jumped over the ditch and up the embankment about 1 second before the cars hit. Yelled for wife to do the same, but she was a mite bit slower on the uptake of what was going down. So, yeah…quite glad the driver plowed on straight.
First car driver was cradling her neck. Guessing whiplash in another couple days. Neither had a clue of what to do next. I had to tell her to call 911 and exchange insurance info. Cops didn’t show up soon though. I took off after 30 mins, leaving her with my number for cops.

Nah.
If he was a pitcher, Macha would let him sit for 2 weeks with no work and then put him for a save situation after refusing to let him warm up. Then he’d rip him for giving up the lead and pretend he wasn’t on the roster until he got sent down.
