Padres 6, Brewers 5

W: Kevin Correia (8-9)
L: Todd Coffey (4-2)
S: Heath Bell (29)

MVP: Prince Fielder (.311)
LVP: Todd Coffey (.-406)

The Brewers are now 0-1 since sending J.J. Hardy to Nashville.

Carlos Villanueva didn't pitch poorly tonight, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks in 5.2 innings, but the bullpen couldn't keep him in it. Tonight it was Todd Coffey who couldn't manage a lead, allowing three runs on three hits and a walk while retiring just two batters. Mitch Stetter followed him to the mound, faced three batters, and retired none.

The Brewers trailed 6-3 heading into the bottom of the eighth, but scored two runs on a double by Prince Fielder before stranding the potential tying and go-ahead runs on first and second. Fielder went 3-for-5 tonight with that double. Jason Kendall was the only other Brewer with multiple hits. Jody Gerut and Frank Catalanotto each came to the plate twice as the right fielder, and went a combined 0-for-4.

Alcides Escobar made his 2009 debut in the ninth inning, pinch running for Fielder, stealing a base and advancing to third on a wild throw, but was stranded there when Mike Cameron popped out to end the game.

McCalvy's blog...

.. has Hall saying he doesn’t think he’ll be at loose ends for the whole ten days “based on the looks and sound of things”.

Also, while I’m trying not to be paranoid, there’s an entry title at the bottom of the scroll indicating a post on the clubhouse reaction. The text of that post isn’t visible, though it looks like it might have been earlier today.

That's the one.

It’s been like that all evening. Seems a little odd that the problem would start with that post, that all posts before it vanished, and that every post since is functioning normally.

Nvmd then.

I can’t see it on Firefox either, but it must just be my problem.

Here you go then (apologies to the mods and Cash for the wholesale lifting):

Brewers general manager Doug Melvin said he “shocked” manager Ken Macha Tuesday night when he told Macha of the changes the club was going to make Wednesday morning.

“Shocked” and “surprised” were two of the main words going around in the Brewers clubhouse Wednesday afternoon, hours after the Brewers relieved pitching coach Bill Castro, optioned shortstop J.J. Hardy to Triple-A Nashville and designated Bill Hall.

Here is some reaction from the players:

First, from Hall, the longest tenured Brewer, about leaving the only team he’s ever known: “It’s something that just happens, nothing big. I’m happy about the time I spent here. [First time in] 26 years we made the playoffs here, so I had a lot of good times and I appreciate everything this organization has done for me and I think it’s time for a new chapter in my life. I’m excited about this chapter. Hopefully these guys can pull it together and turn things around. I’m definitely excited about the next chapter in my life.”

Injured second baseman Rickie Weeks on losing Hall and Hardy, his long-time double play partner: “Shocked, basically. I don’t have too many words to say because of disappointment for everyone else. But it was just one of those things where it’s baseball, it’s a business thing and sometimes it sucks, plain and simple.”

Craig Counsell on how shakeups like these affect the clubhouse: “On a personal level you feel for those guys, for sure, we all do. But the nature of our jobs is that we have to go perform tonight and frankly it doesn’t matter who’s here, you still have to go perform, that’s your job. … It doesn’t change the way you go out and prepare or the way you’re going to go out and do your job. I don’t know what effect it has [in the clubhouse]. Obviously, Doug felt he had to do something.”

And finally, center fielder Mike Cameron, who was trying to keep the clubhouse light before batting practice, on whether the moves will light a spark in the clubhouse: “Who knows what could possibly come about. There are certain things that happen during the course of the season. You saw Colorado get a spark in a change of their manager, you see some teams get guys come up and they may provide an extra burst of energy. There are a lot of things that take place, but the one real thing that’s going to happen, regardless of everything’s that going on today and different things and different situations that take place, at 7:05 [p.m.] we still have to play.”

Another puss who hides behind crap.

Not sure if this was posted elsewhere, but we claimed Doug Davis off waivers

How significant is this, though?

What are the odds of the two teams working something out? My gut says less than 50/50, for sure.

by rluzinski on Aug 12, 2009 10:44 PM CDT up reply actions

I dunno, I think it's fairly good

The D-Backs can only either trade him to the Crew or let him walk and take a compensation pick; I don’t think he’s going to be type A (is he?), so I imagine we can make it worth their while without giving up too much

Should've guessed

They should call Sabean “the Garbageman”; he likes to pick up other teams’ trash.

I'm guessing

We will have to pick up a decent portion of his contract

But it's that rookie baller in return that makes the difference

Only put him on waivers and the Brewers would’ve even get that.

by ecocd on Aug 13, 2009 9:37 AM CDT up reply actions

Unless he's traded before he's released

In which case the Giants probably pay all of $1M plus his 2011 buyout with the control-lacking low-minors relief pitcher for the privilege of beating all the other teams to him.

I recommend we fire Bosio

After Coffey and Stetter’s performance last night he clearly doesn’t know the pitchers and how to prepare them. Hoffman should be implemented as a player/coach.

Brewers make me sad. :(

Ridiculousness aside

The concept of a closer/pitching or bullpen coach is an intriguing one.

"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
