SBNation Coverage
Well, that got more interesting than it needed to.
A game the Brewers led 9-0 and 11-3 got interesting in a hurry in the late innings, as the Padres scored three runs in the fifth, sixth and eighth to make today's game into a save situation.
With that said, the Brewers knocked around Cesar Carrillo, the first time in five attempts this season where they've been able to beat a starter making his major league debut. Carrillo allowed eight earned runs on four hits in 2.1 innings, as the Brewers reached base nine times in the first three innings, and had all nine baserunners come home to score.
Mike Rivera had easily his best day of 2009 today, going 2-for-4 with a walk and two home runs, driving in five runs. Prince Fielder also contributed two home runs as part of his 2-for-4 day, and Jody Gerut went 2-for-3 with a double. Alcides Escobar picked up a single late in the game for his first hit of 2009.
The Brewer bats covered for a rough outing by Manny Parra, who allowed six earned runs on 13 hits and two walks in 5.2 innings, but still managed to win his fifth game in six tries. Parra's game score for today's start was 24, meaning he has the Brewers' three lowest game scores by a winning pitcher this season.

This Hoffman guy is pretty good
The team should try to keep him around for 2010.
That might be nice
If they actually play him enough

That's 6 million dollars+ that can easily be invested better.
I like Hoffman and all, but 43 year old closers aren’t going to be worth that kind of money unless their name is Mariano Rivera.

I agree
But before the season, I said that about 42 year old closers, and it turns out I was wrong.
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
If the money is there, I say we sign him.
However, I think it’s the last position that should be looked at this offseason. I think Coffey would do a good job as closer.

We should really drop the idea that "closer" is a position
Get as many good relief pitchers as you can.
E: George 4 (5, throw, throw, throw, throw).
it should also be noted that parra dealt 7 K's
"I'll be glad to have Ryan help if he wants to. I'll give him a badge and he can be my deputy."
-Sheriff Melvin
He pitched well the first 4 innings
He’ll have something to compare to when watching those last two.
"Cubs suck. I own them" -Doug Davis
Yup, classic Parra, more runs allowed than innings despite pitching well for stretches.
[Parra] has the Brewers’ three lowest game scores by a winning pitcher this season.
Well, at least his ‘bad luck’ doesn’t extend to everything, I guess.
Another puss who hides behind crap.
File this under "that's baseball":
Since being recalled from Nashville, Parra’s pitched really well twice, vs. STL and LA. He got a no decision in the former, and a win in the latter.
He’s pitched pretty well one other time (vs. CIN), and has turned in games with negative WPA in the other four.
He’s 5-0 in that time.
I'm not as impressed with Hoffman as I thought I'd be.
"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"
I’m not as impressed with Hoffman as Ithought toI’dbe.

So Rivera gets more PT, Escobar gets PT, and McGehee rides the pine?
Take some bad with the good I guess…
I bet Casey get all the ABs against LHP and some against RHP
Maybe Counsell gets phased out a little bit down the stretch?

he'll be shuffled all over the place
I think he’ll be splitting time at 3b and 2b. It’s tough when you have 2 utility men
