Game Thread #122: Brewers (59-62) at Nationals (43-79)
Milwaukee Brewers at Washington Nationals, Aug 22, 2009 6:05 PM CDT
Can the Brewers take two straight from the lowly Nats? Will Tom Haudricourt make it through another (probably) rainy night without exploding in a fit of weather-fueled rage?
Follow the jump for tonight's pitching matchup and conversation on tonight's game!
John Lannan (8-9, 3.68) is the only Nat who's made 20 starts this season, and leads the team in ERA (3.68), innings pitched (159), and wins (8). He hasn't been very effective in August, allowing a 6.06 ERA in three starts and allowing opposing batters to hit .318/.400/.485. Mike Cameron and Prince Fielder have faced him a combined ten times and gone 1-for-9 with a double and a walk.
Mike Burns (3-4, 5.36) is probably getting his last chance to prove he belongs in the rotation more than Jeff Suppan. He had his best outing of the season last time out, allowing two earned runs on just four hits in seven innings, striking out seven. A quality start today could convince the Brewers to wait a little longer to bring back Jeff Suppan, who is healthy but has been knocked around in two rehab starts. Or, he could pitch like Suppan and the point would be moot.
Tonight's lineup, as tweeted from the Brewers --- hey look who's no longer batting ninth:
Lopez 4
Cameron 8
Braun 7
Fielder 3
McGehee 5
Bourgeois 9
Kendall 2
Escobar 6
Burns 1
In the bullpen tonight:
Mark DiFelice has not pitched since Tuesday.
Claudio Vargas has not pitched since Tuesday.
Todd Coffey pitched two innings (16 pitches) last night.
David Weathers has not pitched since Wednesday.
Mitch Stetter has not pitched since Sunday.
Trevor Hoffman pitched one inning (13 pitches) last night.
Chris Narveson has not pitched since throwing 5.2 innings a week ago.
Enjoy the game!

Strange Day
apparently I’m calling for Melvin’s head
Cards Announcers On Gamel's First Career HR, ""That’s all they need is another home run hitter".
It's like a booty call, except...
err…never mind.
"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"
This is what you said
If Doug Melvin is willing to treat his players like that, he should be fired on the spot.
Did I ever say you were asking for his firing today? Could you make it a poll. If Melvin leaves Hardy down should he be : fired, loved, made to be Hall and Suppan’s butler. Something like that.
Don’t take it so personall tcyoung. I don’t agree with you and maybe I am the only one way off base.
When did he say this?
What did I miss?
"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"
yes, you did say that I'm calling for his head today, actually
Hardy still could be called up in time so to already be calling for Melvin’s job seems premature even if it makes perfect buisness sense.

You posted today
You proposed an if then senario today. If Melvin does this he should be fired. You called for his head today only if and when all criteria for your statement were met. Therefore you did call for his head today. :)
What if an ump makes a bad call because the rain is clouding his vision?
would THwitter just disappear?

is he really?
was he a vegetarian during his career?

I wouldn't swear by it
but a whole lot of vegetarian books and web sites say so. His own biography mentions that he grew up poor in Alabama, and they never had meat, so it makes sense.

If that's the case, why didn't that come up during the crisis of "Oh No, now Fielder won't hit home runs!"?
hank aaron would have had more HRs than bonds
if he just ate meat
well, and took steroids.

For those who didn't see the first part of the broadcast.
It’s expected to be at least a two-hour delay. I would check back in at 8.

Cubs lost
Remember when that would have filled Brewer fans with such joy. Batteling for second and no playoff spot just not as fun as battling for first and the Cubs sucking.
Cold comfort indeed.

and Bill hall was player of the game last night
Saw him interviewed after the game on the Mariners braodcast. The game was on at the bar and Branyan, Hall, LaPorta and Toma Ohka all played.
ah, 2/4
with an rbi double and a sac fly
Cards Announcers On Gamel's First Career HR, ""That’s all they need is another home run hitter".
Beat me to it
He hit a sac fly with bases loaded. A grand slam would have been to much to handle.
For me
The Brewers were in rain delay and my fish fry was taking forever to arrive. Also there was Favre coverage and the Yankees game on.
yay runs!
that play was way too close with no outs
Old windmill arms at it again.

Mike Burns
is not making his case to stay on the big league team
Mike Burns is a professional pitcher...
So with a big lead, he’s relaxing and not worried about giving up a few runs here and there. (This is me pretending to be from the 50’s).
we should have known this was coming
Let’s look at Burns’ starts…
5.2 IP 4 ER
6.2 IP 2 ER
4.2 IP 7 ER
5 IP 3 ER
3 IP 6 ER
5.2 IP 3 ER
7 IP 2 ER
He skipped his scheduled bad start, so it had to happen soon
"my goodness"
See my comments re: Suppan v. Burns whenever that was. They're about the same, Suppan's slightly better and slightly more consistent.
they're both bad, so what does it matter who starts?
but if Suppan doesn’t have it back together enough to not get shelled in the minors, why not let him try to work out his issues in Nashville?

I think it's pretty well justified hatred
Bush is a lot more cost effective

Bad is bad. I don't blame the guy for taking the best offer out there, blame the guy who gave it to him.
In fact...he had to make up for it by being real bad.
Although 3 IP 6 ER is what he did with his last bad start. I don’t see why they don’t just leave him out there. Of course since I’m not watching the game, I have no idea what his control was like.
Can we just start blaming Kendall now?
ball 3 was actually strike 1

Concession already? Jeez. I've never seen the white flag waved while we were winning. 1st time for everything.
How many pitchers to get 3 outs?

Can anyone explain why DiFelice got pulled during an at-bat?
That’s pretty…wtf. I didn’t turn on the game until that point.
Great, another potentially injured pitcher
“Mark DiFelice” and “failure to throw strikes” aren’t usually found near each other….
He didn't seem hurt.
He just sucked. He walked the pitcher on 4 straight.

His mechanics didn't look funky.

Hey, Narveson gets through an inning without a run.
by Zorakathura on Aug 22, 2009 9:15 PM CDT via mobile reply actions
Because the Red Sox thought they didn't need a DH this year
Or a first baseman. Or an outfielder.
But, yeah, Adam Dunn is very awesome. There’s just the fact that the AL teams that need DHs are too cheap to pay him, and the ones that can pay him didn’t think they needed him.
Boy Morgans fast
I’m not convinced he won’t regress to the mean, but man can he cover some ground. That shoulda been a double
waste of a bunt?
or was he trying to get a hit there?
by PagsBrewCrew on Aug 22, 2009 9:37 PM CDT up reply actions
he stayed on when Bill Hall was DFA'd

rougejim? Just trying to make sure I’m not writing one for no reason

Ron VIllone
seems like he’s the only ex-Brewer that hasn’t killed the team this year
Long Rain Delay
and then Vargas pitching. All this waiting… Is this government run baseball?
