Game Thread #123: Brewers (60-62) at Nationals (43-80)
Milwaukee Brewers at Washington Nationals, Aug 23, 2009 12:35 PM CDT
Can Manny Parra and the Brewers clinch their third series victory in August?
Follow the jump for today's pitching matchup and conversation on today's game!
Craig Stammen (3-6, 5.13) has factored in the decision in just one of his last five starts, a loss, and has posted an 8.75 ERA in his last 20.1 innings. The Nats are 7-10 in his starts this season, and he's been much worse at home, posting a 6.28 ERA in Washington and a 4.18 ERA elsewhere. He wasn't very good against the Crew on July 27, allowing five earned runs on nine hits in 4.2 innings, but the Nats won anyway because Jeff Suppan was much worse.
Meanwhile, Manny Parra (8-9, 6.33) is hoping to rebound from his first loss since returning from AAA on July 9. Opposing batters have hit .346/.402/.551 off of Parra in his last three starts, and he's allowed 27 hits in 17 innings over that time. Cristian Guzman and Ryan Zimmerman are the only Nats who have faced Parra ten times or more, but they've each posted an OPS over 1.000 against him.
Let's play hot-or-cold with today's Brewer lineup: (h/t Tyler Barnes)
Felipe Lopez 2B is batting .472/.513/.750 in his last eight games.
Craig Counsell 3B is 3-for his last 21.
Ryan Braun LF is batting ..279/.409/.676 in his last nine games.
Prince Fielder 1B has reached safely in 12 of 13 games, hitting .346/.417/.788 with seven home runs.
Mike Cameron CF has eight hits in his last three games and is hitting .323/.387/.545 over his last 13.
Frank Catalanotto RF is hitting .455/.538/.591 over his last nine games.
Mike Rivera C is batting .438/.591/.938 during his five game hitting streak
Manny Parra P has two hits and has scored two runs in ten August AB's.
Alcides Escobar SS is hitting .333/.368/.389 in his last six games.
In the bullpen today:
Todd Coffey pitched one inning (18 pitches) last night, and also pitched on Friday.
Trevor Hoffman pitched one inning (9 pitches) last night, and also pitched on Friday.
Chris Narveson pitched 2.2 innings (34 pitches) last night.
Mark DiFelice pitched .1 innings (10 pitches) last night.

Enjoy the game!

A deal we didn't make
Harang is done for the year with an emergency appendectomy.
That’s $6 million we accidentally saved.
"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"
Ok folks, make your predictions: Good Manny or Bad Manny today?
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
Good Manny!

That play would have been sweet

Cheers for asking
I thought it was some obvious bit of baseball knowledge that I didn’t have a clue about. That or it was some player’s really cool nickname…
"I hope your name is Rick"
just a bad joke :)

Manny's gonna get a lot of guys with that pitch Dunn checked his swing on

How did the first runner get on?

hit near Escobar
took a crazy hop – he had one half-chance to get it and wasn’t able. Was so crazy, they did not charge an error. Would have taken a lot to make the play.

And Guzman continues to own Parra.

Stammen
Perfect through 2.1.
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
Huh.
I didn’t think I’d be able to jinx it that quickly.

This team hasn't been good lately,
But how terrible would they be without Felipe Lopez?
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
Fair point
With so many of our regular players having underperformed offensively (Hardy, Hall, Hart, Kendall), been injured (Weeks) or not quite contributed as soon as we might have hoped (Gamel), it’s guys like McGehee and Lopez who have really stopped things being a bit of an embarassment.
"I hope your name is Rick"
Given how he's playing lately
Even if he couldn’t benefit from a few days off, the team could benefit from giving them to him.
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
Yeah
Bad Manny it is.
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
What do I get for my correct prediction??
Admittedly picking the right answer out of a 50:50 guess isn’t all that impressive so I’m not expecting too much…!

You get

Actually now I can see my prediction was clearly wrong
on account of not having gone for “worse-than-bad Manny”…

And Ryan Zimmerman owns Manny Parra, too.

I love how from the Nats commentators perspective
somehow us and the Astros are still in the wild card chase…

That was a really quick hook on Braun
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
And probably warranted.
Bourgeois in left?
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
Bourgeois in left, indeed.
Braun’s first career ejection.
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
Tons of milestones!
Missed the ejection. TH said it was a minors ump who tossed em.

Yesterday, 2.2 scoreless from Narveson, today the same from Villanueva.
Both probably won’t get the credit they deserve, but prevented bullpen disasters.
Also, today is Mark DiFelice’s birthday.
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
kinda weird
Brewers have 1 base on balls and 1 strikeout so far…. and both are Mike Cameron.
Don't look now
But Jody Gerut has reached base in consecutive plate appearances.
