Game Thread #124: Brewers (60-63) at Nationals (44-80)
Milwaukee Brewers at Washington Nationals, Aug 24, 2009 3:35 PM CDT
Everyone loves a Yovani-day, right!
Follow the jump for today's pitching matchup, lineup and conversation on today's game!
Collin Balester (1-3, 6.75) is making his seventh start, but is averaging slightly more than four innings pitched in each of his first six games. His only win in 2009 was against the Brewers on July 28. He's posted a 10.97 ERA and allowed six home runs in his last three starts. Last time out, he allowed three earned runs on three hits and five walks in just 1.1 innings of work, lasting just 51 pitches.
Meanwhile, Yovani Gallardo (11-10, 3.56) comes into today's start in the top ten in the NL in hits per nine innings (fourth), strikeouts (third) and walks (third). Opposing batters are hitting just .197/.295/.364 off of him in his last three starts, but he's just 1-2 in that time. He beat the Nationals on July 30, allowing three earned runs over seven innings and striking out eleven.
Here's today's lineup, courtesy of Tyler Barnes:
Felipe Lopez 2B
Frank Catalanotto RF
Ryan Braun LF
Prince Fielder 1B
Casey McGehee 3B
Mike Cameron CF
Jason Kendall C
Yovani Gallardo P
Alcides Escobar SS
And in the bullpen:
Mark DiFelice pitched 1 inning (12 pitches) yesterday, and also pitched on Saturday.
Carlos Villanueva pitched 2.2 innings (56 pitches) yesterday.
Chris Narveson pitched 2.2 innings (34 pitches) Saturday
Todd Coffey pitched one inning (18 pitches) Saturday.
Trevor Hoffman pitched one inning (9 pitches) Saturday
Claudio Vargas pitched one inning (7 pitches) Saturday.
David Weathers pitched one inning (14 pitches) yesterday.
Mitch Stetter last pitched on Sunday, August 16.

So it is a Yo day game
That means our high powered offense will score 0-1 runs right?
Maybe Yo can hit a Home run or two by himself and win 2-1
Oh and apparently Cammy has remembered he is in a contract year over the last week and is actually hitting the ball nice of him to show up.

How are the shadows in Washington's park?
It’s afternoon/evening game, so i’ll guess the offense will put up 2-3 runs.

Strike him out, Yo
Cards Announcers On Gamel's First Career HR, ""That’s all they need is another home run hitter".
Adam Dunn has 311 career home runs and won't turns 30 until November.
If I set the over-under for his career total at 575, which one do you want?
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
That's a tough one.
At best, he’s probably got three or four more years in the NL. He’s a butcher in left field, and he’s not much better at first. He could go to the AL and DH until he’s 39 … if he feels like it.
I’m going to say under. I think he’ll finish right around 500.
Under
I don’t think he’s going to be hitting 40 HRs a year well into his 30s. I think he’ll have a steep decline, starting at about 32.
also
the guys who score had high similarity scores to him are guys like Gorman Thomas, Incaviglia, Gus Zernial, who didn’t wear well. However, nobody scores in the 900s, so Dunn may be unique.
Well
575 would be 264 more. Here’s my math:
8 more this season to reach 40
Five more seasons at 40 each for 200 more.
So at that point he’d turn 35 and sitting on 521. If he can stay healthy that long, then 54 more in his career is pretty easy.
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
Yeah, I go under too
but I don’t think he’ll be that far away from 575.
Of course, to give it a Brewers slant, Jason Kendall is currently on 74 home runs. I’m setting the over/under for career total at 75…

Cards Announcers On Gamel's First Career HR, ""That’s all they need is another home run hitter".
I for one
Can’t wait till he’s playing for someone else…
And now couldn’t find the handle on a SB attempt.
I don't know if this is pessimism or realism.
But if I had to put odds on it, I’d give it about 75/25 that Kendall comes back next year, and about 65/35 that he opens 2010 as the primary catcher.
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
I really hope its pessimism

Well, here's my logic.
1) Given the fact that the organization is standing behind him and playing him damn near everyday, it would appear they’re not disappointed with his performance, at least not enough so to merit trying an alternative.
2) There’s not a clear cut alternative, at least in the organization’s eyes. They must not like Rivera for some reason, Salome and Lucroy aren’t sure-fire prospects.
So, I can see them giving Kendall one more year. Someone will have to keep me from jumping off a rooftop when it happens, but I think it’ll happen.
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
Replacement level
At this point, you could pick up any number of catchers that no other team wants, and they would be comparable to Kendall. Unless he’s willing to take a substantial pay cut, I can’t imagine Melvin bringing Kendall back.
Kendall makes $4.2 million this year. For what? To be last in just about every offensive category, and his much vaunted defense was a short-lived phenomenon. The Rangers are stockpiling catchers this year. I bet Melvin could have productive discussions with them about bringing over a non-Pudge catcher, if he doesn’t care to just pick up a replacement-level guy.
Rivera makes $395,000 this year. Melvin could pick up 2 more Riveras from AAA or somebody’s bench, and rotate them all next year and get similar performance. He could apply the remaining $3 million toward signing a pitcher, either a reliever or a back of the rotation guy. It’s just silly to overpay like that for a catcher when you complain to the media how hard it is for small market teams to compete.
by Marty McSuperFly on Aug 24, 2009 4:26 PM CDT up reply actions
Right.
All of those reasons are why I’m going to be pissed when it happens.
But, based on his playing time and the apparent lack of accountability for him, I think Melvin thinks Kendall is somehow better than any significant stat would suggest.

There's gotta be a GRIT joke in there with that wild pitch...

Suppan
I live in the neighborhood where Suppan’s shitbox of a restaurant is. I’ve been thinking of going there and doing a little dine and dash. Now, I would sit at the bar as to not stiff a waitress and I’d probably leave a snarky note behind explaining my actions. Anyone have thoughts on such a maneuver?
ps went there to watch game three of the Brewers playoffs last year there and had to ask them to put the game on. It was all college football.

I'll vote no.
Because I doubt the loss would actually come out of Suppan’s pocket. And if it did, it’s not a significant loss to him anyway.
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
Most likely he's only a part owner... just to get his backing.
He’d most likely end up ripping off whomever took his order… like the bartender.

not to beat a dead horse
(i assume it’s in poor taste to say “not to beat a kendall to death”)
but if he can’t hit, can’t throw, and if yovani was at 108 PC, you could argue he didn’t call a good game…

How?
The balls hit the net instead of hitting a glove. The pitcher is then responsible for all pitches he does or doesn’t make correctly instead of blaming it (partly, whether deserved or not) on some guy bent down in a semi-crowded area.

the joke’s not really funny enough to pursue. but, yeah, i was implying that it’d be more effective to throw into a “backyard net” than to kendall. it was supposed to remind you wistfully of your childhood. i had to throw a tennis ball against a garage door, but pasting a link to a garage door would probably just confuse folks even more than that net apparently did.
