The Brewers wasted a pretty good start from Braden Looper tonight, who allowed just two earned runs on five hits and three walks over six innings, and left with a 3-2 lead. Unfortunately, one run wasn't enough of a cushion, as the Reds rallied to score an unearned run off Claudio Vargas in the eighth to tie the game.
All of the Brewer offense came via the home run in the fifth inning, as Jody Gerut hit a solo shot and Prince Fielder hit a two run jack to give the Brewers the lead. Fielder went 2-for-4 with a walk in the game, while Gerut went 2-for-5. Ryan Braun picked up three hits and a walk, and Jason Kendall was also on base three times, going 0-for-1 with a walk and two HBP.
The game was tied at three with two outs the top of the tenth, when Braun dramatically misplayed a fly ball to left, allowing Wladimir Balentien to score the game winning run and giving a tough luck loss to Mike Burns, who would have had a scoreless inning if Braun made the play. The Brewers had the winning run at the plate with one out in the bottom half, but Casey McGehee struck out swinging and Mike Cameron grounded out to end the game.

Is saying the game was tied going to the top of the tenth a pleonasm?

Dramatic misplay?
I like that one. Maybe a new fielding category.
I wonder how Braun is doing the DM area this year. How do his DMs as a third baseman compared to his DMs since switching to a position he is more comforable with?

KL referred to Braun's gaffe
as a “dramatic misplay.” Dramatic Misplay should be a new fielding stat – so bad that “error” just doesn’t give it ’true value."

DM can only mean Doug Moustache here?

yep
how about MDP
misplay of dramatic proportions
oh, shit. I personally don’t want to use that one on second thought.

it makes more sense when I read it as it's meant to be read
instead of saying Doug Melvin for DM

Definitely an Unlucky
Result for the Brewers yesterday. Braun catches that ball and they still have a chance to win.
The guy is on pace offensively to be one of the best, but his defense has definitely hurt his WAR since becoming a major leaguer.
Outside of his injury last year, who has had the better career so far among the 07 ROY 1st and 2nd place? Braun or Tulowitzki? Braun has a .5 game edge this year, but only has about a 1.5 game edge over their 3 years as pros (again, noting that Tulo missed a lot of last year)? Who would you rathat have? If given the chance to go back to the 05 draft would you still take Braun over Tulo?
as you said
he’s better. is there a discussion?
by PagsBrewCrew on Aug 27, 2009 11:55 AM CDT up reply actions
Which injury?
Tulo’s from last year or Braun’s injury that killed his September?
Braun’s career WAR is dragged down by his terrible defensive season at a position he doesn’t play anymore. If you’re comparing going forward, shouldn’t you account for that?
Tulo last year
Bruan’s defense is still pretty bad now. If not for his defensive lapses at 3B in his rookie year would he have been able to beat the 5 WAR that Tulo had?
Even if Braun doesnt slide in September last year how much better is is WAR? a half game, a game?
Thats the whole point though. These guys are pretty even…Tulo has outstanding defense at a premium position and hits quite well. Braun hits well. What would you rather have?
Depends
If you’re going to take out Tulo’s 2008 season (and 25% of his career PAs) to say they are dead even, can I pick 25% of Braun’s PAs I don’t like to say that Braun is way better?
I get that you don’t like Braun because you think he’s a douchebag and you need to tweak the statistics to fit your agenda. When you omit full seasons from Tulo and don’t take into account Braun’s -23 runs at 3B in 2007 vs. his average of -3.5 runs in LF…well, that’s when you lose me.
"Bruan’s defense is still pretty bad now"
what’s his WAR in the outfield? Seriously, is it really awful?
He had a high profile mistake yesterday, but really….
He’s not completely inept.

I agree...
even Cameron, a former Gold Glover winner, misjudges balls from time-to-time.
In fact, at last night’s game, both Cameron and Braun seemed to be heading to the same spot before realizing the ball was going over Braun’s head.
was Cam
playing the ricochet as a method to back up Braun? Or do you think that’s where he thought it was going to land as well?

I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt
and assuming BTC is grading Braun on either live scouting or a particular sabre stat. He seems to love WAR and every calculator Sky has ever developed.

Boo, Reds, Booooo
Cards Announcers On Gamel's First Career HR, ""That’s all they need is another home run hitter".
Eventually they either need to A) get rid of the quality start moniker, or B) require that it be done in like 80 pitches or less. 106 pitches through 6 innings is garbage
The Quality start stat is bad
I don’t think adding a pitch count to it will make it any better
by CheezeconQueso on Aug 26, 2009 10:57 PM CDT up reply actions
I think it's a useful category
It doesn’t mean you pitched a great game… just that you pitched well enough to give the team a chance to win, And Looper only gave up 2 runs, so it wasn’t just a minimal QS.
Yeah, who cares if it was pretty to watch?
QS is supposed to be a rough quantification of whether (and in the aggregate, how often) the starter managed to ‘keep his team in the game’, nothing more. Or in other words, it quantifies effectiveness, not efficiency. Complaining that it fails at doing something it wasn’t designed to do is, umm, kinda pointless.
How about an exceptional start stat.
Maybe 7+
2 or fewer runs

Well, I learned one thing from tonights game thread.
Apparently I think Braun is infallible.

Yucky game
Poorly played all around. Especially Brauns gafe was simply horrible.
Narvason or Burns sent down for Bushy?
I've got to stop going to games....
I think I’m 0-5 this season.
Vargas’ throwing error was the killer… Braun’s just sealed their fate.
Bases loaded with 1 out with McGehee up to bat also didn’t help matters.
He's only been hitting well recently...
but you may be right about him being a decent starting option in CF next year. If nothing else, let him and Bourgeois split time.
