Game Thread #129: Pirates (53-73) at Brewers (62-66)
Pittsburgh Pirates at Milwaukee Brewers, Aug 29, 2009 6:05 PM CDT
Can the Brewers take two in a row?
Follow the jump for tonight's pitching matchup, lineup and conversation on tonight's game!
Kevin Hart (4-3, 4.14) hasn't been all that good as a Pirate, posting a 1-2 record and a 6.04 ERA, but his only win came against the Brewers, who he beat on August 17. He's struggling a lot with baserunners lately, having allowed 39 in just 22.1 innings as a Pirate, and hasn't lasted longer than six innings in any start this season. Jason Kendall is 3-for-6 against Hart with a walk, and is the only Brewer who's faced him more than five times.
Meanwhile, Yovani Gallardo (12-10, 3.51) is facing the Pirates for the fourth time this season, and has gone 1-1 with a 2.57 ERA in his three previous starts. Gallardo has factored into the decision in each of his last seven starts (4-3), but has done so while throwing a lot of pitches: His 107.8 pitches per start is the fifth highest average in all of baseball. He was inefficient but effective last time out, picking up the win while allowing just one run on four hits in five innings (and 108 pitches), striking out eight.
Frank Catalanotto is back in the lineup today, in right field: (h/t Tyler Barnes)
Felipe Lopez 2B
Craig Counsell 3B
Ryan Braun LF
Prince Fielder 1B
Mike Cameron CF
Frank Catalanotto RF
Jason Kendall C
Alcides Escobar SS
Yovani Gallardo P
Meanwhile, Ryan Doumit is not in the lineup tonight, after being benched mid-game last night. The team has confirmed he's not injured, but he was removed abruptly last night, will not play today and manager John Russell said "we'll see" when asked if he'll play tomorrow. So the Brewers will probably see a lot of Pirates backup (and Racine native) Jason Jaramillo.
And in the bullpen:
Trevor Hoffman pitched one inning (21 pitches) last night.
David Weathers pitched 1.2 innings (20 pitches) last night.
Todd Coffey pitched .1 innings (6 pitches) last night.
Chris Narveson pitched three innings (40 pitches) Thursday.
Mark DiFelice pitched 1.1 innings (28 pitches) Thursday.
Claudio Vargas last pitched on Wednesday.
Mitch Stetter last pitched on Wednesday.
Carlos Villanueva last pitched on Tuesday.
Enjoy the game!

You're not joking.
I was hoping this would help ease my boredom waiting at the airport for my flight home, but maybe not.
Maybe people forgot it was a 6:05 start
I did.

Kendall is the only Brewer to face Hart more than five times?
That’s weird, considering he was teammates with Hart in Hart’s rookie year.

Totally
One more double and he’ll get his slugging percentage above .300

well he paid him back in spades for that swinging strike three

Hernan Iribarren just hit a grand slam off ex-Brewer Jose Capellan
Sounds up 5-1 in the 4th – Capellan rolled through the first 3 innings.

Chorizo. Italian made a good effort but almost biffed it at the home warmup circle and slowed way down.

This is a pretty fantastic run-manufacturing inning

So Tom H. has his weekly baseball beat column up already.
To sum up:
1. The Card are destroying the NL Central.
2. The Brewer early pick pitchers from 2008 are struggling (except Odorizzi).
3. Milton Bradley’s dumbass and the Cubs deserve him.
4. The White Sox will probably get Peavy on the mound after it’s too late.
5. Chipper Jones is struggling and preventing the Braves making a playoff run.
6. Adrian Beltre has swollen testicles and Tom thinks he should wear a cup.
7. Manny’s slumping.
8. The Cardinal pitching staff doesn’t give up walks (hint, hint)
9. The BoSox have a utility man who pitches better than many pitchers (hint, again)
10. Livan Hernandez may have been exaggerating when he said being a National was a dream come true.
