Left-hander Manny Parra is introducing a cut fastball to his array of pitches, Macha said. It's a work in progress; Pittsburgh's Steve Pearce hit one Friday for a two-run double.
Doesn't he already throw a ton of different pitches? Wasn't there some discussion that he should limit what he throws to three pitches he can truly master?

your stuff on the bottom was exactly my reaction as well
doesn’t he already throw too many types of pitches?
Pretty sure I remember Sabathia saying that.
I’d be curious to know where the idea to start throwing the cutter came from.

Rarely has the "throwing everything but the kitchen sink" adage been more appropriate.
Maybe that’s next.
More seriously, perhaps he doesn’t think he has three pitches he can truly master among his current arsenal and the cut fastball will be a replacement, not an addition.
Is there anything but the knuckleball left for him to try after the cutter?

Gyroball
get that double spin mechanics working
"That's not a weird stat. Rickie is a run-scorer," Yost said. "It doesn't matter. It doesn't matter," Yost told reporters. "See, you guys have no concept. He's a run-scorer. So there's nothing weird about it. That's what he does."

Season's Over
So I think he’s trying to see what can be effective for next year. The games mean nothing anymore outside of pride, I’m betting Manny’s just consider this an early spring training where he can work on new ideas. I don’t think he should limit his pitches, but I do think he should throw two or three main pitches, and use the others as pitcher count pitches hopefully to get the batter swinging at air. Unfortunately I am not his pitching coach and probably won’t be so my opinion means nothing.
