Game Thread #109: Brewers (54-54) at Astros (53-55)
Milwaukee Brewers at Houston Astros, Aug 7, 2009 7:05 PM CDT
It's Carlos Villanueva v. Bud Norris at 7:05. Follow the jump for tonight's pitching matchup, lineup and conversation on tonight's game!
Bud Norris (1-0, 0.90) has had some significant early success in the major leagues with the Astros, allowing just one earned run in ten innings of major league work. His last time out, he pitched seven shutout innings and allowed just two hits in his first major league start. In AAA, he was 4-9 with a 2.62 ERA in 120 innings for Round Rock.
Carlos Villanueva (2-8, 5.98) is coming off his best outing of the season, five scoreless innings with just two hits in his second start of 2009. He's still in the process of getting stretched out, and will probably be good to go for 85-90 pitches and 6 innings or so tonight.
Frank Catalanotto gets the start tonight in right, and Craig Counsell is back at third (h/t JS):
2B Felipe Lopez
3B Craig Counsell
LF Ryan Braun
1B Prince Fielder
CF Mike Cameron
RF Frank Catalanotto
SS J.J. Hardy
C Jason Kendall
RHP Carlos Villanueva
Enjoy the game!

Norris hasn't yet pitched in a game that wasn't a shutout
His debut saw the Astros lose 12-0 and his first ever start saw them win 2-0.

Fun fact
From a Tom Verducci article this past week:
So it goes in today’s game, as the actuarial tables get rewritten. Only six players 36 or older have played enough to qualify for the batting title, and only four of them actually play in the field: Raul Ibanez, Chipper Jones, Mike Cameron and Craig Counsell.
And only three of those players are major leaguers!
Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.
I also noted that in the Mug this week.
Cited it via a link from Al. :-)

I don’t want to get Sheffielded again.

anyone remember
Villanueva’s last start against Houston? Particularly that 6th inning. It makes me slightly nervous for today
"my goodness"
Didn't Parra have a start like that, too?
Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.
Did he?
Giving up three straight homers? You’re the one to ask about this kind of stuff.

Well, a bad start in Houston
Maybe not three straight homers. Gave up back-to-back HRs to Backe and Bourn, though.

I wish it was Suppan who was 2 weeks away
And Bush who would be ready in a week
"Cubs suck. I own them" -Doug Davis
It's hard to imagine Suppan will be back as soon as they think
Remember Bush was due back a bit sooner as well, I guess we’ll see
It's kinda nice to have Catalanotto playing
and not have to read 30 posts about how Hart is on the trade block
he can't be traded anymore anyway
at least not this season

Thats why I'm glad
Though secretly I was so used to it I’m kinda surprised they weren’t still popping up in talks of after-deadline trades, not like Hart would clear waivers of course
Macha hopes for 5-6 innings out of Villanueva, and possibly more?
So he’s a regular starter, then.
Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.
He's pitched well.
His first start deserved a better line. Thats why I was hoping Suppan would be out longer then Bush so if Villa keeps throwing well, Suppan can just go on the lifetime-DL.

A quick one act play
Macha: Jeff, I have bad news. We’ve diagnosed you as in need of Tommy John surgery, hip replacement, and an appendectomy…consecutively.
Suppan: But it’s my oblique that hurts!
Macha: Right, but nothing about your performance has been good, so we’re starting from scratch.
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
Actually, act two
From the ensuing press conference:
Macha: Gentlemen, we can rebuild him. We have the technology. We have the capability to build the world’s first bionic man.
