Game Thread #110: Brewers at Astros (54-55 each)
So, the winner of this matchup gets up to .500. Someone pitches against someone else and some of our relievers were used last night. Further, we're sending 8 guys plus a pitcher to bat against Coop's squad.
Hey, at least I created a post:P
Random filler to get the word count up, as I'm too lazy to copy-paste lineups or any other such filth.
Go Brewers Go dammit. Sock some homers. Win one for the gipper.

Nice RBI KC!

Solid contact there at least

Astro's pitcher getting looked at
He’s staying in

I think the Brewers may need to start practicing bunting
It seems like we’re always popping them up
dickie_thon: Third baseman Bill Hall / Watches the third strike go by / Gamel grabs his glove
Got it down though, nice Parra

Just neede 4-5 more runs
before I’ll feel slightly confident in the pitching staff not giving this away
Better than bases-loaded walk!

Minus the whole injury part, right?
I’m following on Gameday, didn’t see it.

General suckitude + possible injury I'm guessing

There might be, not really sure

You and me both
It’s a rough spot for the team, with Lopez, Hardy, Counsell, and McGehee, 4 players for 3 spots, with each making their case for more play time (though Hardy has certainly been streaky… as he’s proving right now)
I know Lopez is, not sure about CC but I think so
dickie_thon: Third baseman Bill Hall / Watches the third strike go by / Gamel grabs his glove
Nice AB JJ

But Kendall is so durable
and he calls a great game
dickie_thon: Third baseman Bill Hall / Watches the third strike go by / Gamel grabs his glove
I think the only way JJ wasn't going to be out at the plate
was if the ball hit him, that was extremely fortunate
dickie_thon: Third baseman Bill Hall / Watches the third strike go by / Gamel grabs his glove
Why does Fisher hate the brewers?
Another would-be out at home plate. with no outs whats the point

I'm calling that a "pity strikeout"

I find it easier to forgive with a 6 run lead

Oh squiggly line in my eye fluid.
I see you lurking there on the periphery of my vision.
But when I try to look at you, you scurry away.
Are you shy, squiggly line?
Why only when I ignore you, do you return to the center of my eye?
Oh, squiggly line,
it’s alright, you are forgiven.

Happy birthday to Ed Sedar and Doug Melvin!
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
Pitch count for Parra?
dickie_thon: Third baseman Bill Hall / Watches the third strike go by / Gamel grabs his glove
We'd have to clear a spot on the 40 man roster.
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
I'm guessing you meant Corporan
Because Cappy is on a minor league contract, and not on the 40 man roster.
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
that was quick

Run for an out
Okay in this situation, just don’t make that trade for too long.

I'm fine with letting him flirt with disaster here.
I think he’s learning by working out of and after jams.

I will certainly take that

dickie_thon: Third baseman Bill Hall / Watches the third strike go by / Gamel grabs his glove
No matter how many times I'm reminded
And how many many times I consider it, I still can’t get over that this team is consistently in the top 5 for runs scored and only cruising around .500
hopefully old Manny is gone for good
then he’ll be fun to watch for years

Wright (the run scorer) would not have been on base if not for Lopez's error
Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.
So yes, if you were just making sure
And not questioning why :)
Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.
Pre AAA that would have been 4 runs
a sad face, and an early exit.

They've got Batting Stance guy in Houston too?
I was really hoping to get away from him…

I have no use for him

Dequam LaWesley Wright

"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
This is what happens
When you keep the actual best 3rd baseman on the team on third, and put the self-proclaimed best third baseman in the league in RF
Nice distribution
His last ten outings: 4, 1, 11, 23, 5, 53, 1, 3, 46, 57+
Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.
Wow, that's pretty incredible.
When’s the last time someone managed five outings of under five pitches and three outings of 45 or more in a span of ten?
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
I don't know
But it seems like the kind of usage an old ex-starter lefty like Darren Oliver (or someone barely hanging on, Glendon Rusch maybe?) would be subject to, not a younger guy like Wright.
Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.
No way.
If Hoffman threw 45 pitches, he’d be unavailable for a month.
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
Not nearly an exhaustive list and not matching your criteria
But Ron Mahay in 2004 (esp. June) and Heath Murray in 2001 had some odd usage.
Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.
Reward him for getting out of trouble last inning?
dickie_thon: Third baseman Bill Hall / Watches the third strike go by / Gamel grabs his glove
Only at 88 pitches coming into the inning
Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.
This surprised me.
Wesley Wright threw 61 pitches in relief. Relievers don’t do that very often, right?
Wrong. Wright’s 61 pitches were only the 46th longest outing by a reliever in 2009.
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
In fact, it's only the sixth longest outing by an Astro.
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
Gio Gonzalez threw 108 in a relief appearance for the A's.
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
Gonzalez and Dustin Nippert last year
The only pitchers since 2000 to throw 90 pitches in relief in back-to-back appearances.
Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.
Ok
It might be time to phone down to the bullpen and see what Claudio Vargas is doing.
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
Actually, no
I don’t want Vargas coming in with runners on. Give me Colome instead.
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
So, of course, Vargas is up.
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
Supposedly he's good at weaseling out of jams

The only one who hasn’t….is Braun, surprisingly.
dickie_thon: Third baseman Bill Hall / Watches the third strike go by / Gamel grabs his glove
Carlos Lee's 300th HR.
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
Ok, you be Ken Macha:
How long do you let Vargas go? This could be an opportunity to stretch him out a bit.
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
I thought they didn't really want him to start
Either way, just let him go until his spot in the order comes up again.
Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.
He's thrown 23 pitches
If he gets thru the 8th in less than 15 pitches, he goes back out for the save.

Especially if you're going to pinch-hit with Gerut

A three run triple would also give him the RBI lead.

Or, for expediency's sake
He could just ground into a DP and start looking ahead to tomorrow.
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
That was just unfortunate
dickie_thon: Third baseman Bill Hall / Watches the third strike go by / Gamel grabs his glove
Wow...
The Astros radio guys loathe Prince. Spent a half-inning bashing him yesterday, and making more sarcastic comments tonight.
"Why do the Brewers think Fielder should play first base? He looks nothing like Elvis did during his physical implosion."
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
As opposed to playing where, exactly?
dickie_thon: Third baseman Bill Hall / Watches the third strike go by / Gamel grabs his glove
I don't know.
It was a joke. :-)
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
Sorry...got pulled away
On that at-bat, where Prince was apparently arguing the strike call, they said something to the effect of, “Well, gee, Prince, that’s because he got you with a swinging strike.”
Last night was a half-inning of them inaccurately rehashing the Dodgers incident and calling him an immature hothead.
