Brewers 9, Diamondbacks 2
W: Dave Bush (4-7)
L: Kevin Mulvey (0-1) - first career decision
MVP: Dave Bush (+.130)
LVP: Ryan Braun (-.029)
Win Expectancy Graph
Dave Bush had his second good start in a row tonight, striking out eleven and allowing one run in seven innings as the Diamondbacks flailed away at almost everything he threw. It was the fourth time in his career he reached double digits in strikeouts. Mitch Stetter pitched a scoreless eighth and Todd Coffey pitched the ninth, delaying John Axford's debut for at least one more day. Coffey allowed a run for the fourth time in his last five games.
Meanwhile, the Brewers offense ran right over Kevin Mulvey. While WPA credits Dave Bush as the team MVP, Casey McGehee probably deserves the honor for his 4 hit, 2 HR, 6 RBI night. He took the rookie RBI lead away from Gerardo Parra and certainly strengthened his case for Rookie of the Year. He wasn't alone, though, as every position player contributed at least one hit. Ryan Braun was 2-4 with an RBI but still wound up the LVP. Prince Fielder also went 2 for 4 and Mike Cameron was 3 for 5. The Brewers now have 29 hits in Arizona after mustering only 33 hits in their previous six games.

Macha/Gamel
I know that Macha has no faith in Gamel but why not let the kid get some at bats in a game that they are blowing out the competition. Instead they put in a guy that has maybe 1 or 2 season’s left in him. I am now on the bandwagon that Macha needs to go! They need a manager that is willing to play the rookie players. That is the only way that this team can survive. I truly hope that Macha will be fired in the offseason and does not get a pass due to the pitching blowing up.

I almost agree with you
Macha is really pissing me off with the way he’s [not] playing Gamel. I’m not saying fire him, but I certainly wouldn’t mind seeing him go.

I agree that it would have been nice to see Gamel late in the game...
but is it really a fireable offense?
I also don’t buy the playing rookie players “is the only way that this team can survive”.

Bill Hall had a good year too that caused the FO to make a bad decision
I hope he doesn’t regress but I also hope this season doesn’t cause the FO to make another bad decision and trade away Gamel.

I doubt Gamel will get traded because of McGehee's season.
They could keep both especially with Weeks being a question mark next season.

Agreed
Furthermore, I just don’t think it’s Doug’s style to do something rash like trading away Gamel…my gut feeling is the worst-case scenario that might actually happen would be McGehee gets traded away and remains a stud, doesn’t regress, which wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world, especially if we get a good return for him. That, I think, is far likelier than Gamel being traded away.

definitely
They’re both cheap and under team control for a LONG time. Don’t move either one. I think they need to try to get what they can for Hart and Hardy and work from there.

Post-game Comments from the Mind of Macha:
“When you break in young players, you want to pick your spots,” … “We want him (Escobar) to feel good about himself.”
And later:
As far as Macha is concerned, right-hander Braden Looper is a keeper… “We’re six games under .500 and he’s six over,” said Macha. “As manager, absolutely I want him back.”

No, Yost would just make stuff up to defend his players.
Last year, for example, when Bill Mota was the in the throes of his mid-season meltdown, Yost said something along the lines of: “He’s struggling right now, and it’s mystifying, because his stuff is so good” — though it was clear to anyone who watched Mota pitch that the guy was throwing meatballs up there.
At the least, what Macha said is true. It’s irrelevant, for sure, but it’s true.

wait, you don't want him back?
He’s a passable 3rd/4th starter (especially lately), and it’s much easier to find (and afford) 2 starting pitchers than 3.

I wouldn't be opposed to bringing him back, but...
"We’re six games under .500 and he’s six over," said Macha. "As manager, absolutely I want him back," is not a good reason why.

maybe (just maybe)
he’s afraid of calling out looper and risking offending the magical amulet of run support. As in, if he points out looper sucks, the players would give up trying to put runs on the board for looper.
Also in macha’s defense: the question was asked of him. He has a few options a) throw looper under the bus b) “no comment” (which essentially is option a) or c) praise a player that’s managed to do “well” despite the odds.

agree
I tend to agree that Looper has done about what was expected out of him. Sure he has given up a lot of HR but HR/FB is something that jumps all over the place year to year and isn’t heavily under a pitchers control. It isn’t like his FB% has spiked and suggested his HR rate should be way up.
Looper is a servicable but unspectacular back of the rotation guy. He is hardly the teams problem.

Macha's comment
I don’t expect Macha to just randomly throw Looper under the bus — and while Looper’s W/L is probably not the best stat, it’s probably appropriate for the audience Macha was talking to.
Also, if I were Macha, I’d want Looper back because, as of today, there is no one better in AAA to replace Looper. I don’t like Looper at all, but I am not sure that there are better options – hopefully that changes, but probably not for 2010.

McGehee at 1B?
Due to big time difference I didn’t even catch the start of the game, let alone the late innings.
What was the reason for McGehee moving to 1B? Was Prince tired, or they want to test McGehee at 1B?
Just having that “the Brewers should trade Prince now” thread in my mind…

Macha's done it a few times before this season
Take Prince out just to give him an inning of rest. Its always in a blowout. I wouldn’t look anything into it.
