I'm still not sure why Craig Counsell started at short tonight, but here's a cool photo of him turning a leaping double play.

W: Ryan Dempster (10-8)
L: Jeff Suppan (6-10)
S: Carlos Marmol (13)

HR: Derrek Lee (33)

MVP: Jeff Suppan (+.228)
LVP: Prince Fielder (-.174)

Win Expectancy Graph
SBNation Coverage

If you had made a list of likely outcomes in a Suppan-Dempster matchup at Wrigley Field, a 1-0 game into the eighth inning probably wouldn't have been high on that list, but here we are.

Jeff Suppan posted his best performance of the season, allowing just one earned run on three hits in seven innings of work, but was tagged with his tenth loss as Ryan Dempster and Carlos Marmol matched and bettered that performance, shutting the Brewers out on four hits and two walks in the series opener at Wrigley.

A Brewer lineup without Ryan Braun tonight could muster just seven baserunners, including a pinch-hit HBP for Braun in the eighth. Prince Fielder drew a walk, but Fielder, Mike Cameron and Jody Gerut, batting in the 4-6 spots in the lineup, went 0-for-10 with that walk.

Fielder was actually the LVP.

I still maintain that Braun got the day off to avoid a plunking

What a brilliant 4 k performance by Cammy

sniff, I am going to miss watching him do that in a Brewers uniform next year

Everything is just swell :)

Yes, yes, you hate Cameron.

That’s fine. But I ask, in all earnestness: of the centerfielders who were available last winter (including those already in the Brewers system), who did you want the Brewers to get to play center this year?

thank you

Next season when Cammy is gone and I am back on meds you are all going to miss this running serial ;P

It will be a tragedy when you have nothing to post about next year.

whine all you want but the majority of the comments on this post

are based off of my one little comment I know you prefer a nice boring everyone agree with you blog but conflict is good for traffic you should be thanking me.

And I will once again say it this blog was a lot more fun last year ;P

No, I prefer a blog where posters don't repeat the same comment over and over and over and over and over

and over.

I am stunned you managed to post a comment without bitching about Mike Cameron. Stunned.

You know me Al.

by TheJay on Sep 15, 2009 12:23 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

doesn't take much to stun you than

So when Cammy sucks we are just supposed to ignore it? Just turn a blind eye to a 4 strikeout night act like it never happen. If Cammy would put up the numbers that I feel a guy getting paid 10 million should be putting up I would not bitch.

Oh wait this is the part where you tell me that Cammy is a bargain at 10 million and we should be greatful that he is gracing our Centerfield.

Everything is just swell :)

He is OPSing more than .800.

I mean, he strikes out a ton and is having an awful September. Just the same, he’s tied for 4th in the NL starting centerfielders in OPS, with the plus defense.

Of course, Melky Cabrera is only 32 points behind in OPS, and is making just a smidge less money. :)

You guys are missing the point

Baseball is not just numbers part of being a fan is liking or hating a player for reasons beyond numbers. I hate Cammy as a player. There does not have to be a reason I just do. I know that in Jay’s Spock like world of baseball my hatred of Cammy is not logical but it is what it is. Jay is amazed I would bitch about a 4 strike out night one of them to end the game. Because in his Spock like world of baseball failure is ok as long as your numbers avg. out I rarely say anything in the comment threads about Cammy anymore, hell I rarely even participate in the comment threads because they are boring and no place for anyone who does not toe the BCB group think line. But comment on a truly terrible performance by Cammy and right away Jay is all over me. Jay you seem to have all the time in the world to look shat up. Before last night when is the last time I said anything negative about the greatest Center fielder to ever where the Brewers uniform? I am willing to bet it was a while ago.

Tell you what Jay I will not say another thing about the Great Cammy the rest of the season that should make you happy. Everything is just swell :) Right that is what you want to hear right?

Everything is just swell :)

Cam

(and Kendall and pitchers) should be pulled in the 9th inning for offensive bench players. No doubt. If he can still contribute to a game defensively and we’re tied/in the lead, he should be left in and we’ll just have to deal with his Ks.

Wow

Ummm, I don’t even know what to say to that.

Sure, there are reasons unbeknownst to fans why they don’t like or even loathe a player. Heck, how I feel about Braun really is due to a myriad of things and not really one concrete reason. However, I think a blog meant to center on intelligent conversation (that was the tagline at one point right?) should focus not just on personal preferences for a team/player/coach/whatever, but on analysis on why that feeling may or may not be well-founded and possible solutions to problems therein.

Also, a blog centered on intelligent conversation shouldn’t be based simply on conflict. Conflict is not intelligent conversation on a normal basis. It is instead fighting and blowing up over the littlest of details (I’m fine with being a hypocrite right here, just listen okay?). As someone currently doing research on one of the biggest conflicts in world history, I think it’s safe to say that conflict really hasn’t solved anything; instead, conversation, diplomacy, and being open to new ideas is really what helps anyone in the world. Anyone who thinks that bringing about conflict makes things more fun (like I assume this blog is supposed to be for most of us) should probably be more involved in something like UFC or politics than baseball.

Even when I try to set aside my personal relations to Jay, that was a pretty rude retort on your part to what he said. He only made two comments to what you said and other people did argue a similar point. I don’t want to put words in his mouth, but I’m sure that his problem isn’t that you “bitched” about a fourth strikeout from Cam towards the end of the game when he could’ve been pulled (which I’m sure we all have done – whether it’s Cam or not – at one point or another), but that this is consistently the manner in which many of us see you interacting on the site. I will be the first to admit that anyone continuing to stress the same point over and over is one of the most annoying things.

Mayhaps we should all think about what we say at least a little bit before we say it. We could possibly get a little more of the fun atmosphere from last year back that you seem to miss so much if we weren’t all fighting over crap, trying to decipher what others are saying, or having to deal with constant trolling.

You can say I'm a dreamer - but I'm not the only one.

actually

conflict on a blog/forum makes me want to run away and not come back. Sure, there’s a temporary spike in traffic, but if it continues in a sustained fashion, traffic is lower than before.

Conflict is akin to sugar: gives you a sweet high, but crashes you low and hard.

Cameron

I am not a big fan of Braun, but according to WAR, and not many Brewer fans are probably aware of this, nor would willingly admit it, but Cameron has more value this year, as well as the last 2 years combined, than Ryan Braun.

I like Cam’s defense, but his strikeouts are a major issue. When they went out and got him, I would have liked to have seen them go after Aaron Rowand. Of course Rowand has not put up the power numbers in AT&T Park, but I bet he could come close to his last Philly year in Miller Park. The numbers dont show it, but he is a pretty decent defender in CF.

How much more?

It’s nice that Cameron’s glove makes up for the huge difference at bat.

Either way, I’d rather have a declining Cameron than vague hopes Aaron Rowand repeated a career year. But hey, he should be due for a good 2010.

You know me Al.

by TheJay on Sep 15, 2009 8:55 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Strike outs, Cam vs. Rowand:

In 131 games, Cam has fanned 134 times.

In 130 games, Rowand has fanned 112 times.

Cam has out-OPSed Rowand in each of the last two seasons, and Cam’s better with the glove. And the Giants still have to pay Rowand $40 million (total) for the next three seasons.

Most fans might not willing admit it

because, technically, it’s not true. Cam and Braun both log in for 2009 at 3.9.

Of course, Cameron is making more than 13 times Braun’s salary in 2009.

When I looked

last night, Cameron had the edge. Must have been updated already given his night last night.

Over the past 2 years, Cam has the slight edge over Braun 7.9 to 7.8. Braun is having another bad September.

Braun is definitely the better value, but Cameron has outperformed.

And on Rowand, I wonder how much a hitter friendly park boosts his numbers? His splits dont really play it out, but you have to figure that 81 games in Miller Park vs 81 games in AT&T will have a very nice influence on a players offensive performance.

Cameron

At least he hasn’t hit into a triple play.

by statsllc on Sep 15, 2009 9:32 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Holy cats

Bill Hall’s OPS is a little more respectable in Seattle so far (.710), but he has 29 strikeouts in 74 ABs. That’s a K every 2.5 atbats.

He's hit righties better than lefties, too

Right is left, up is down.

Their other midseason buy low acquisition, Ian Snell, isn’t doing very well. Maybe he misses Indianapolis.

Not only that...

he’s also playing everywhere… LF, RF, 2B and 3B… and no errors!
