BCB Fantasy Football Draft Analysis and Brewers Comment

It was nice to see the Crew sweep for the first time in awhile. And getting one from the Cubs yesterday was nice as well.

Now on to the draft analysis.  Again, I'm biased, having drafted the lowest scoring team last week, so I eliminate myself from judgment.  In addition, there are no best picks in the first round, but I will call some out for worst pick.

Round One

1. Adrian Peterson Romo sucks d...
2. Larry Fitzgerald MyDogWantsVi...
3. Maurice Jones-Drew RashaanSalaa...
4. Matt Forte Marks Filthy...
5. LaDainian Tomlinson Favre on the...
6. Michael Turner Let me see y...
7. DeAngelo Williams Chmura's Hot...
8. Chris Johnson Steve Dirt M...
9. Randy Moss TalibFractur...
10. Drew Brees TheKuKluxKla...
11. Steve Slaton Plaxie's got...
12. Steven Jackson HideUrBgleVi...
13. Frank Gore CutlersInsul...
14. Brian Westbrook BigBen Roeth...

I'm beginning to think it is a huge mistake to take running backs withone good season under their belt in the Opening round.  My pick of Forte in the 1st, Let me see your TDs pick of Michael Turner, Chamura's Hot Tub Club's selection of DeAngelo Williams, Steve Dirt McNair pick of Chris Johnson, and Plaxie's Got a Gun's pick of Steve Slaton are all big risk picks in the 1st.

Round Two

1. Brandon Jacobs BigBen Roeth...
2. Andre Johnson CutlersInsul...
3. Calvin Johnson HideUrBgleVi...
4. Reggie Wayne Plaxie's got...
5. Clinton Portis TheKuKluxKla...
6. Tom Brady TalibFractur...
7. Peyton Manning Steve Dirt M...
8. Greg Jennings Chmura's Hot...
9. Marion Barber Let me see y...
10. Steve Smith Favre on the...
11. Ronnie Brown Marks Filthy...
12. Marques Colston RashaanSalaa...
13. Philip Rivers MyDogWantsVi...
14. Anquan Boldin Romo sucks d...

The next tier of runner is perceived lower than the top tier of wideouts, so you saw some good ones going here with solid selections in Andre Johnson, Megatron, Wayne, andGreg Jennings.  I was not so big on guys withHUGE Questions at QB in Steve Smith and Anquan Boldin, whose QBs seem to be on their last legs due to age and ineffectiveness.  Also, I like Rivers too, but selecting him in the 2nd may be pulling the trigger too soon.

Round Three

1. Aaron Rodgers Romo sucks d...
2. Ryan Grant MyDogWantsVi...
3. Julius Jones RashaanSalaa...
4. Roddy White Marks Filthy...
5. Pierre Thomas Favre on the...
6. Eddie Royal Let me see y...
7. Jason Witten Chmura's Hot...
8. Wes Welker Steve Dirt M...
9. Kevin Smith TalibFractur...
10. Thomas Jones TheKuKluxKla...
11. Kurt Warner Plaxie's got...
12. Dwayne Bowe HideUrBgleVi...
13. Tony Romo CutlersInsul...
14. Brandon Marshall BigBen Roeth...

We have a shmorgasboardof positions going here, with some very prudent picks of guys like Aaron Rogers, DeWayne Bowe, and Romo.  However, someone is going to have to explain the Kurt Warner selection to me.  He is old, and despite the weapons, he is still OLD.  Last year was obviously a last hurrah for him.  Taking him before guys like Romo, McNabb, Schaub (though I am not a big Schaub guy), and Ryan will prove costly.

Round Four

1. Terrell Owens BigBen Roeth...
2. T.J. Houshmandzadeh CutlersInsul...
3. Darren McFadden HideUrBgleVi...
4. Derrick Ward Plaxie's got...
5. Chad Ochocinco TheKuKluxKla...
6. Beanie Wells TalibFractur...
7. LenDale White Steve Dirt M...
8. Joseph Addai Chmura's Hot...
9. Antonio Gates Let me see y...
10. Reggie Bush Favre on the...
11. Donovan McNabb Marks Filthy...
12. Vincent Jackson RashaanSalaa...
13. Marshawn Lynch MyDogWantsVi...
14. Santana Moss Romo sucks d...

Running backs that went in the 4thI think will produce better than went in the 3rd, with Mcfadden, Ward, Addai, and White all going here.  The two picks I love are Ochocinco, who is the premier threat in Cincy now, Houshmanzadeh, who moved to bring Seattle's passing game some teeth, andVincent Jackson, who is primed to become a top tier guy this year.  The only pick I foundreally objectionable are Reggie Bush, who hasn't developed beyond decoy level.

Round Five

1. Roy Williams Romo sucks d...
2. Antonio Bryant MyDogWantsVi...
3. Matt Hasselbeck RashaanSalaa...
4. Anthony Gonzalez Marks Filthy...
5. Tony Gonzalez Favre on the...
6. Ray Rice Let me see y...
7. Jay Cutler Chmura's Hot...
8. Willie Parker Steve Dirt M...
9. Santonio Holmes TalibFractur...
10. Pittsburgh TheKuKluxKla...
11. Hines Ward Plaxie's got...
12. Braylon Edwards HideUrBgleVi...
13. Jonathan Stewart CutlersInsul...
14. Larry Johnson BigBen Roeth...

I would've really liked my pick of Anthony Gonzalez had he not gotten hurt, and Santonio looks to be taking over Ward's mantle as the premier guy in Pittsburgh.  On the negative front, taking a defense before the 9th is always a questionable call, especially since you don't have your main scorers set yet.  Taking LJ at the back endof the round is a very good calculated gamble.  I also like the Hasselback pick, though you could'vewaited a round to pull the trigger

Round Six

1. Lee Evans BigBen Roeth...
2. Donnie Avery CutlersInsul...
3. Matt Schaub HideUrBgleVi...
4. Donald Driver Plaxie's got...
5. DeSean Jackson TheKuKluxKla...
6. Knowshon Moreno TalibFractur...
7. Bernard Berrian Steve Dirt M...
8. Matt Ryan Chmura's Hot...
9. Carson Palmer Let me see y...
10. Jerricho Cotchery Favre on the...
11. Greg Olsen Marks Filthy...
12. Torry Holt RashaanSalaa...
13. Dallas Clark MyDogWantsVi...
14. Willis McGahee Romo sucks d...

I liked the Ryan pick for the QB, getting a second tier guy after a lot of people picked up their signal caller was very good, and I think Ryan continues his march to eventual Stardom this year.  The other picks I like were solid veterans like Holt and Clark.  I didn't much care for the Berrianselection, who is now dealing witha QB that has been withthe team for less than a month, and has only had a fluke season with Grossman at the helm.  He's on a team that is truly run first, and isn't much of a threat as it is.

Round Seven

1. Owen Daniels Romo sucks d...
2. Devin Hester MyDogWantsVi...
3. Chris Cooley RashaanSalaa...
4. Derrick Mason Marks Filthy...
5. Kevin Walter Favre on the...
6. Donald Brown Let me see y...
7. Lance Moore Chmura's Hot...
8. Kellen Winslow Steve Dirt M...
9. Laveranues Coles TalibFractur...
10. Steve Breaston TheKuKluxKla...
11. Visanthe Shiancoe Plaxie's got...
12. New York HideUrBgleVi...
13. Jamal Lewis CutlersInsul...
14. Baltimore BigBen Roeth...

I really like the Hester pick here.  Despite him not being much of a wideout, he does have speed and a QB that can get the ball downfield to him.  I see him moving up to a producing second tier guy, and very much good value in the 7th.  My Mason selection gives me good depth with another solid veteran.  Breaston was a reach for me here, with my pesimistic prediction for Warner, and the fact that he's a 3rd receiver.  I'm not a fan of Winslow this year either, with Leftwhich and his FEMA slow delivery sending the ball out to him.

Round Eight

1. Eli Manning BigBen Roeth...
2. Zach Miller CutlersInsul...
3. John Carlson HideUrBgleVi...
4. Cedric Benson Plaxie's got...
5. Rashard Mendenhall TheKuKluxKla...
6. Domenik Hixon TalibFractur...
7. Tennessee Steve Dirt M...
8. Minnesota Chmura's Hot...
9. Felix Jones Let me see y...
10. Matt Cassel Favre on the...
11. Ted Ginn Jr. Marks Filthy...
12. LeSean McCoy RashaanSalaa...
13. Michael Crabtree MyDogWantsVi...
14. Green Bay Romo sucks d...

Getting a starting running back in the eigth is a pretty good coup, even if he's on the Bengals.  Explain to me the Cassell pick though.  He's hurt.  He's still going to be hurt for another couple weeks.  Over Big Ben as well?!?  I think it was a poor choice there.

Round Nine

1. Darren Sproles Romo sucks d...
2. Philadelphia MyDogWantsVi...
3. Percy Harvin RashaanSalaa...
4. Ben Roethlisberger Marks Filthy...
5. Dallas Favre on the...
6. Jerious Norwood Let me see y...
7. Fred Jackson Chmura's Hot...
8. Muhsin Muhammad Steve Dirt M...
9. Jeremy Shockey TalibFractur...
10. Heath Miller TheKuKluxKla...
11. San Diego Plaxie's got...
12. Michael Jenkins HideUrBgleVi...
13. Chicago CutlersInsul...
14. Dustin Keller BigBen Roeth...

Muhsin Muhammad?  Really??? Some excellent picks here too, with Big Ben (thank you), Fred Jackson (a starter for a good 3 weeks), and the Chicago D as well.

Round Ten

1. Stephen Gostkowski BigBen Roeth...
2. Tim Hightower CutlersInsul...
3. Shaun Suisham HideUrBgleVi...
4. Deion Branch Plaxie's got...
5. Chris Chambers TheKuKluxKla...
6. Jermichael Finley TalibFractur...
7. Brett Favre Steve Dirt M...
8. Le'Ron McClain Chmura's Hot...
9. Sidney Rice Let me see y...
10. Rob Bironas Favre on the...
11. Jamaal Charles Marks Filthy...
12. Fred Taylor RashaanSalaa...
13. Ryan Longwell MyDogWantsVi...
14. Leon Washington Romo sucks d...

We are all idiots for letting Leon Washington slip as far as he did.  Great selection there, especially since we are in a PPR league.  Though I question the Deion Branch selection.  When has he done anything that is inspiring to make him a selection outside of being traded for a number 1 pick?

Round 11

1. Jeremy Maclin Romo sucks d...
2. Shonn Greene MyDogWantsVi...
3. Kevin Curtis RashaanSalaa...
4. Nate Burleson Marks Filthy...
5. Sammy Morris Favre on the...
6. Josh Morgan Let me see y...
7. Patrick Crayton Chmura's Hot...
8. Laurence Maroney Steve Dirt M...
9. Ahmad Bradshaw TalibFractur...
10. Joe Flacco TheKuKluxKla...
11. Mark Clayton Plaxie's got...
12. Chester Taylor HideUrBgleVi...
13. Jake Delhomme CutlersInsul...
14. David Garrard BigBen Roeth...

There were two QBs selected at the endof this round.  One received a solid receiver in the off season and has a top tier running back.  The other has a top tier receiver, and a low first tier high 2ndtier running back.  Yet my view on the two vary widely.  The Garrard pick was the best selection of the round, where the Jags are primed to have a very good bounce back year, where the Delhomme pick was a head-scratcher as he is the downfall of the Panthers, and should never have received that extension in the off season.  The NFL is cyclical people.  I also liked the Josh Morgan pick here as well.

Round 12

1. Ricky Williams BigBen Roeth...
2. Chase Coffman CutlersInsul...
3. Kyle Orton HideUrBgleVi...
4. Brian Robiskie Plaxie's got...
5. Ladell Betts TheKuKluxKla...
6. Steve Smith TalibFractur...
7. Edgerrin James Steve Dirt M...
8. Bo Scaife Chmura's Hot...
9. New York Let me see y...
10. Earnest Graham Favre on the...
11. Correll Buckhalter Marks Filthy...
12. Darrius Heyward-Bey RashaanSalaa...
13. Miles Austin MyDogWantsVi...
14. Justin Fargas Romo sucks d...

Nothing really good stands out.  On the Bad side, when has Cincy ever thrown to a TE?  Just curious for Chase Coffman's behalf.

Round 13

1. Justin Gage Romo sucks d...
2. Trent Edwards MyDogWantsVi...
3. Jason Campbell RashaanSalaa...
4. Tony Scheffler Marks Filthy...
5. Mark Bradley Favre on the...
6. Nate Washington Let me see y...
7. Dominique Edison Chmura's Hot...
8. Joey Galloway Steve Dirt M...
9. Earl Bennett TalibFractur...
10. Devery Henderson TheKuKluxKla...
11. T.J. Duckett Plaxie's got...
12. Miami HideUrBgleVi...
13. Kenny Britt CutlersInsul...
14. Vernon Davis BigBen Roeth...

Kyle orton loves TEs, so as a backup, Tony Scheffler was a good pick this late.  Earl Bennet is also the only wideoutin Chicago currently that has rhythm with Cutler, so that was a wise selection, and Devery Henderson was also a wise selection here as well.  I do question the judgement of the person who selected the WR that the Titan's 6th round selection over taking their WR who they got in the 1st (who went 6 picks later).  Getting Vernon Davis was also a good move as I like his skills in "PROTECTING THIS HOUSE!!!"

The rest of the way was pretty much Kickers and roster filler, but one special pick sticks out as probably the worst in the draft, though it was taken in the 17th, and I need to call him out...

Dikembe, Plaxico is not getting out of prison any time soon.  Selecting him was moronic, even if you are trying to make a statement for conceal and carry advocacy.  You should feel dumb for that pick.  That is all.

Feel free to comment on how you feel your draft went.  I felt pretty good up until posting less than 70 points last week.

I am pretty out of the loop when it comes to football stuff

But hasn’t Kurt Warner had as many “last hurrahs” as Brett Favre has had retirement tours?

You know me Al.

by TheJay on Sep 17, 2009 9:52 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

good call

Times Warner’s career has been called dead… There was when he left st. Louis, then when he left New York, and then this past season…
Favre has had… 2?.. retirement tours

So I put Warner at 3 to 2.

I'd like to be excused from passing on Leon Washington......

seeing as I already had about 40 RB’s on my roster at that point. :)

I can't really complain about Cadilac Williams.

I’m liking the value in the 15th round.

Also, the pick of Roddy White in the third round is highly objectionable.

How far will this one fly?

Why?

the guy got 1200 yards in that hell season in atlanta of 2007, and got 1300 yards with rookie Matt Ryan there last year. What makes you think that he’s worse than Welker, or Bowe, or TO, or Marshall or Ochocinco?

It's like the same with the 'one good year' runningbacks.

Well, in this case it was two good years. But before the 2007 and 2008 seasons, he was nothing better than waiver wire fodder, just absolute garbage. When I’m looking third round I’d prefer a more consistent receiver, the likes of Welker. It’s more a personal preference really. Good luck improving upon on your nightmarish week 1.

5th Round Defense

I wanted a top Defense. Really, if I picked anyone other than Pit or Bal, I wouldn’t have been pleased. My plan was to beat the rush for DEF, and I thought I would trigger about 4 defensive picks before my next selection. I was wrong, and my 3rd WR became Steve Breaston instead of Ward, Evans, Driver, Cotchery.

I succeeded in getting my defense, but I failed on my timing.

If I traded away Jones, I wouldn't have anyone to fill his spot

If you’re looking for an upgrade over Eli at QB, I’ve got Flacco. If you’re looking for an upgrade over Jacobs at RB, I don’t think I can help.

I screwed up in either the 1st or 2nd round......

I should’ve taken either Moss or even Brees in R1, or Colston on the way back in R2. Not getting a real #1 WR is going to kill me. I remember having Jennings all lined up in R2 and he went the pick right before me.

I choked a few times

I raced to Appleton to make the draft in time. Got there like 7 minutes beforehand. Moose Muhammed was an absolute choke on my part. As was Chris Johnson. Oh well.

I went QB too early.

My team will live and die by Randy Moss and Tom Brady. Week 1 was good, but we’ll see what the future holds. If I had it to do over again I would have taken Jennings in round 2 and Rice in round 4 and waited to take either McNabb or Palmer in round 6. My roster after 4 rounds would have been Randy Moss, Greg Jennings, Kevin Smith and Ray Rice.

Instead, because I took Brady in round 2, I was scrambling for RBs by round 4, and I reached like crazy with Beanie Wells, which will probably turn out to be my worst pick.

I do like my picks of Ahmad Bradshaw in round 11 and Earl Bennett in round 13. Overall I just wasn’t prepared for the speed of the draft. I haven’t done a live draft in 10 years until this one, and I panicked a couple of times (see Wells, Beanie in round 4 and Moreno, Knowshon in round 6).

I meant Matt Ryan in round 6. Not McNabb. He went in round 4.

159 pts the first round.

That is all.

Actually if I could do it again, I probably wouldnt have gone with Boldin, maybe Welker since he’s almost sure to get 7+ pts a week.
