Game Thread #148: Astros (70-77) at Brewers (72-75)
Houston Astros at Milwaukee Brewers, Sep 19, 2009 6:05 PM CDT
At least one Wisconsin team is playing a legit opponent today. While the Badgers continue to celebrate their win over Wofford, the Brewers actually managed to schedule a team in their own league for a game tonight.
Follow the jump for tonight's pitching matchup, lineup and conversation on tonight's game!
Brian Moehler (8-10, 5.01) has just one win in his last ten starts, and hasn't lasted past the sixth inning in a start since July. With that said, the Astros are 14-12 in games he starts this season, and have won each of his last three no decisions. The Brewers beat Moehler in his only start against them on August 15, picking up three earned runs on ten hits in five innings. Among Brewers who have faced Moehler at least ten times, Prince Fielder (.545/.667/1.041) and Jason Kendall (.714/.765/.786) have hit him well, while Ryan Braun (.250/.308/.250) has not.
Jeff Suppan (6-10, 4.87) picked up the loss last time out despite posting one of his best games as a Brewer, allowing just one earned run on three hits in seven innings. He's posted a 2.28 ERA over his last four starts, lowering his season ERA over 50 points. He's received no decisions in each of his previous two starts against the Astros, posting a 4.90 ERA in eleven innings. Geoff Blum (.536/.581/.893) and Lance Berkman (.417/.533/.778) hit him well, and Kazuo Matsui (.158/.158/.263) and Darin Erstad (.242/.286/.303) do not.
Here's tonight's lineup: (h/t Adam McCalvy)
Felipe Lopez 2B
Corey Hart RF
Ryan Braun LF
Prince Fielder 1B
Casey McGehee 3B
Mike Cameron CF
J.J. Hardy SS
Jason Kendall C
Jeff Suppan RHP
And in the bullpen:
Carlos Villanueva pitched one inning (21 pitches) last night, and also pitched on Thursday.
Trevor Hoffman pitched one inning (11 pitches) last night, and also pitched on Thursday.
Chris Smith pitched one inning (22 pitches) last night.
David Weathers pitched one inning (10 pitches) last night.
Todd Coffey pitched .1 innings (8 pitches) Thursday.
Claudio Vargas pitched one inning (11 pitches) Thursday.
Mitch Stetter has not pitched since Wednesday.
John Axford has not pitched since Tuesday.
Josh Butler is in the bullpen but is not expected to pitch until Sunday.
Mike Burns recently rejoined the team, and hasn't pitched since the end of the AAA season.
Enjoy the game!

I'm an idiot living outside the USA
Please explain. Who, exactly, are Wofford and why are the Badgers getting credit for beating them?
"I hope your name is Rick"
If Florida gets credit for beating Troy
then the Badgers get credit for beating Wofford – at least Wofford’s in a conference with a good team (Appalachian State)
Brewers fan lost in South Carolina.
Troy, if I'm not mistaken
is actually a bowl subdivision opponent. Wofford is not.
That's all I've got for you today, unless you're interested in some Chris Capuano/Tom Haudricourt Fan Fiction.
Boy, have I got a lot of revision to do...
"I hope your name is Rick"
To simplify
There are roughly 120 football teams in the top division. The Badgers instead played a middle of the road team from the next division down today.

Florida
hasn’t played a game against a non conference opponent outside the state of Florida since 1991.
Weak.

IIRC, the UConn men haven't lost to an in-state basketball team since 1988 or so
…and they kind of brag about it.
You know me Al.
I'm not sure they do.
I mean, the count it as a win in the school records, but I’m not sure it counts as a win in determining whether they’re bowl eligible, and from what I’ve seen, that might matter this year.

I think you can count only one win against an I-AA/FCS (or lower) opponent each year
So playing the Woffords and Cal Polys as your entire non-conference schedule would not work.
You know me Al.
At last night's game, he looked pretty bad on those infield singles.
He got to them, but man… his throws were weak.
Close ?
At the game andbut looked close to oa hr.

It's amazing to me
How many people pay money for a seat at miller park with no intention of watching a baseball game
It is what it is.

its even more amazing
that more people pay more for a seat at Wrigley with no intention of watching a baseball game

a related anecdote
I was watching Samantha Brown’s Great Weekends on the travel channel and she was in Chicago and had rooftop tickets to a Cubs game. She asked the people around her what the score was and no one around her knew. Then she asked who the Cubs were playing and still no one knew.

I'd put that number at around 60%.
But maybe I’m just in a bad mood. Even the folks in the seats (instead of wandering the concouse) barely seem to pay attention.

I'm sort of numb to the Jason Kendally issue at this point.
But Hardy playing over Escobar at this point doesn’t really bother me. Escobar hasn’t struggled at the plate for months and you don’t have to worry about him taking a bad outlook into the offseason as a result of his lack of opportunity/production.

oi this game is slow
I turned it on. I got on BCB. I’ve been watching Shinohara Tomoe videos instead.
I know this is just the Astros...
… but what effective pitcher is it that has taken over Suppan’s body?

OMG it's true
McClung is back.
…and also, Josh Butler really does look like Derrick Turnbow. It’s uncanny and disturbing.

so true
as far as Brewers’ history is concerned, that RBI would mean way more than anything else that could happen tonight.

Yeah.
Replay made it pretty obvious that Gerut would have been out by 30ft with a good throw.

So does Cooper get a bonus if he has to sit in the dugout for 3 hours?
5th pitcher this inning coming on now…

Patterson
Why? There’s plenty of prospects who could have used that now wasted ab. Why is he on the roster?

I'm glad one of my teams is winning today.
’Cause dang, the other one kicked me in the groin repeatedly.
