Melvin Not Happy With Roster Expansion System
Does Doug Melvin like anything about Major League Baseball?

Not really brought up in this article, thankfully
But my favorite complaints from GMs involve how some teams can’t afford as many call-ups. Those $67k, month-long call-ups are just too pricey in the MLB world.
You know me Al.
wtf
“You play 80 percent of your season with even rosters,” Melvin said, “and then all of a sudden, you throw that out. It’s like playing three-on-six in basketball or 11-on-18 in football. I don’t know of any sport in the world that does it like ours, with this kind of imbalance of rosters. I’d like to find out if there’s any other sport that does that at the most important time of the year.”
um….it’s not like playing 3 on 6. It’s not even like playing 4 on 5 like in a powerplay in hockey. It’s not even like playing 8 on 8 in basketball (if that was possible) – teams can only put 9 out there at a time, and if they don’t want to use the players they don’t have to.
Sorry doug – nice try to save your job. Fail
hire bobby cox as GM
Braves manager Bobby Cox believes that Major League Baseball could adopt a rule allowing clubs to carry an extra pitcher or two in April. He says this could reduce the stress placed on arms and possibly reduce the amount of pitching-related injuries a club encounters during the season.
“I think it would help, even if you just added one pitcher to just get you through the first month,” Cox said. “When you lose your starter after just one inning because it’s cold and rainy, you’re really scrambling for the doubleheader, or when you resume that game, you end up using the whole bullpen.”
would be nice to expand rosters for interleague play too by a couple of players. Or allow clubs option-less demotions/promotions during that period of time, as long as the original players are re-instated at the end of the interleague period.

Amen, Pags.
And, correct me if I’m wrong: in ‘07, especially, and ’08, to a lesser extent, weren’t the Brewers salivating for the September roster expansion, since the introduction of fresh blood allowed Yost to ease up on the bullpen? DiFelice came up big last September, as did Stetter.
UPDATE: I’ve now read this article twice. I still don’t understand what Melvin’s complaint is.
Only example I can think of...
Is recently when I took a group of 11-14 year olds to play 5-a-side soccer against another team and they were so bad that they ended up having nine players on their side (the other team only had four in the first place). They still got beaten about 10-2 as well. Still, our goalkeeper called a good game so it wasn’t a complete waste of time.
I think Doug will find that this is the perfect analogy to use next time the subject comes up…
"I hope your name is Rick"
What a load of crap.
If a team doesn’t have enough players worthy of calling up September, they deserve to be at a disadvantage because they aren’t drafting and developing talent. And if it’s a money issue, then you’re running the business side of your team like crap. You can call up a dozen guys for 750k. If that’s the difference between solvency and insolvency for an MLB team, hire a new business manager and stop whining.

"It's the most ludicrous thing I see in sports," he said.
I can think of like 37 things that are more ludicrous.
E: George 4 (5, throw, throw, throw, throw).
No. 1: the DH.
You want somewhere to direct your anger and confusion, Doug? How ‘bout the fact that there’s a DH in the AL, but not the NL. I’m stealing this line from Simmons, but the use of the DH in the AL vs. no DH in the NL is the equivalent of an NFC team playing at an AFC opponent and being told: “We don’t use kickers in this league. Whoever scores the touchdown has to kick the extra point.”
Melvin is a tool
He’s almost single-handedly destroying my interest in the Brewers.

When Melvin extended Ned Yost...
The question that I started asking myself was not “Should DM be fired” but rather “What should DM be fired out of”

How quickly you all forget the important things...
Without DM there wouldn’t have been free double stuffed Oreos at the Astros game for DM bobblehead day.

It could almost be billed as a FNY reunion tour.

My suggestion for content
is to have more pictures of the Moustache Pint Glass. That’ll keep everyone happy…

feel free to lift and republish any of my rants
not that I rant a lot about melvin or have coherent thoughts, but the offer is there

Cool
I was going to snag a few comments and put something together. But my first thing is to be shallow, and make fun of his bobble attendance. But first I need to compare it to all time low.
That is if I get time.
Dude -- I totally rock shallowness....
I am literally a depth of shallowness…
I’m onboard once we know he isn’t going to be fired in 2009.

Right on
Step 1: Make someone post content for me.
Step 2: Occasionally comment on something
Step 3: ?
Step 4: Profit
It’s all coming together.
It's big money
I think Tim made about $1.75 on google ads for FNY.

Tim should have had more nudity on FNY
I hear it sells

By the way
Did someone archive FNY? — It is a sacred part of Brewer lore.

maybe i should come up with a witty screen name
and contribute in 2010 as well. I’m open to suggestions.
I’m going with IShotTheSheriff unless someone’s got something better for me.

Roguejim had an interesting comment the other day ...
about Melvin trading his scrap heap reclamation projects (see, e.g., Scott Podsedink) a season too late, after their value has peaked. That might be an interesting post.
yep...
what he does with the following players will continue to define him
McGehee – great year, but probably at-peak (assuming at least one other GM looks at this season in isolation and doesn’t overcompensate for the fact that this was peak year and overly regress him)
Looper – With an ERA like that….
Patterson
Kendall – okay…enough with “calls a good game”
He made up a bit of ground in my book by declaring Hall a sunk cost. I wish we had been able to get something tangible out of him…the timing was a bit late for a playoff run too, so I don’t know why he didn’t just bench Hall for the rest of the season or leave him down in AAA to arrange a trade during the offseason. But the fact that he EVENTUALLY realized he made a mistake…
Also of note will be what he does with Hardy/Escobar, Gamel, the centerfield issue, Corey Hart, starting pitching, etc (does it really come as a surprise to anyone that Hoffman was under utilized this season given Suppan, Parra and Looper in the rotation? I thought the reason we didn’t resign Cordero was because he felt the closer was a waste of money given the rest of his squad)

memories....
Reading back to comments from the beginning of the season reminds me why I didn’t by tickets to as many games this year….

I’ll concede that Cameron ended up being better than I expected, but not by as much as some people do.

When I'd see you and Sackman used to argue a point...
… I always got the same sort of fascinated/terrified feeling I got when my parents argued.
Pretty sure I need therapy.

Thank God someone else out there is as outraged about September callups as I am.
I don’t have a category for "washed-up guys who may or may not be dominant big-league closers sometime soon."
