Win Expectancy Graph
SBNation Coverage
The Brewers did their best to make a game of it today, but were doomed once again by a terrible performance from their starting pitcher.
Today it was Dave Bush, who allowed three extra base hits in the first inning en route to a short 4.1 inning outing where he allowed five earned runs on nine hits and a walk. From there, four Brewer pitchers held the Phillies to one run over the remaining 4.2 innings, but the Brewer bats fell just short.
The Brewers scored four runs in the sixth to make a game of it, led by Mat Gamel's three run home run to bring the Brewers within two, but the bats were done after that. The Brewers had a runner on first with two outs in the eighth, but Corey Hart was picked off first to end the inning. Hart was on base four times in the game on two hits and two walks, but scored just one run.
Ryan Braun also went 3-for-5, but the Brewers' starting 4-6 batters (Prince Fielder, Casey McGehee and Mike Cameron) went a combined 2-for-11, as the Brewers left ten men on base. With the loss, the Brewers went 40-41 at home this season, their first losing home campaign since 2004.

Yeah
Rockies will need to win to get Wild Card, and Cards will have to win to guarantee a first round home field advantage.
Will be facing beatable pitchers but the Brewer counterparts arent anything spectacular against that offense. Might be a lil easier against the Cards as Carp and Wainwright might rest, but the Cards wont want to limp into the playoffs, or allow any “untucking” on their home field.
Best case, realistic, 80-82.

Atleast we got 30 bucks out of it
They had a scratch off thing for ticket deal, game worn stuff or $10 in concessions in 2010. Got 2 $10 buck sand found a ticket deal and another $10 dollar. To bad beer doesn’t count

Butler fail
I’d say his performance was worse than Bush’s. All inherited runners scored, and left the next inning with bases loaded. A WHIP for the game of 7!!!!! Just atrocious.
If it hadn’t been for him letting Bush’s runs score, we would have been in position to win it. Or if Smith hadn’t bailed him out it would have been completely out of reach.

the guy started the year in A ball
give him a break. Of all the pitchers to complain about he’s really low on the list.

okay...
i blame melvin then for promoting an A ball pitcher.
In terms of today’s game, he was not as good as bush. I’m not saying his potential is low or anything, but he didn’t perform at MLB level today.
P.S. aren’t BBs supposed to be level-independant?

Not really
Level of competition changes a lot of things. Drawing walks is a skill. Check some minor league splits pages and you’ll see the adjustments.

Probably wanted to see how he would handle the pressure
He showed up ready to play and have success, so why not?

I have no problem
I say lets see what we have, and lets have the young kids understand what they need to do to get to the pros. It seems like Butlers off speed stuff can fool farm batters but not the pro’s. So he’ll have tow ork on it.
Yes it sucks losing, but does it matter if we end 77 – 85 with an idea on what we are doing next year, or 81 – 81 and not taking some time to evaluate against playoff teams.

Exactly
They made a big deal on the broadcast about how many arms were in the bullpen, and wondered why bring in the kid with a week of experience into a big situation. The teams not going anywhere, they gotta try to see who can contribute next year. Butler’s gotta make a pretty good impression at AFL to be considered for the pen next year. Unless they see him as a starter in the future, in which case… huntsville it is.

Was this really a "big" situation, though?
They were down 3 runs when he came in. Sure, Gamel’s HR made those extra runs relevant, but how often does that happen? The Brewers were at 13.6% to win when Butler came in.
That's all I've got for you today, unless you're interested in some Chris Capuano/Tom Haudricourt Fan Fiction.

Runners were on either way
It might not be a high-leverage situation or whatever, but he’s still got to come in firing out of the stretch and keep runs off the board.
