Free Agent Pitchers 2010

A sad season spiraling to an end leaves me wondering what could have been. The most glaring need for 2010 is starting pitching (the same can be said for +/- 95% of Major League teams). Cot's Baseball Contracts lists the following SP's as likely free agents...

Brandon Backe HOU

There's some notable names out there (Beckett, Webb, Harden, Bedard) but who can we realistically expect the crew to go after? My gut tells me a name like Tim Hudson might appear in Brewer blue come January, but I'm interested to hear everyone's thoughts.

It almost makes me sad to say that I'm now looking forward to basketball season. By the way, very cool local company I found on youtube the other day: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u9oy4Wdnyi0

Brandon Webb

I would be behind such a signing. AZ doesn’t look like they want to commit to him (or even pick up his option) so we could easily swoop in. Otherwise, give me a Sheets/Harden duo. They may not be healthy throughout the life of the contract but they will probably average a collective 300IP of very good pitching per year.

Who cares what you thinks, its all about the GM's opinion

If I may paraphrase Doug Melvin’s comments from about 2 months ago. Its more valuable to have a pitcher go 6-8 innings a starts and miss 3/4 of the season than a pitcher that goes at most 5 innings a start every start. I know i am just paraphrasing but you get the point.

He also mentioned we need to fill in some pitchers via free agency because we won’t get any talent from the minors for the next 3 years. I take that as the crew is willing to sign some 3 yr deals. here comes Lakey hudson bedard harden or pinero.

Why didn't you note that the players with astericks after their names have options for 2010?

Beckett will not be a free agent. Webb will probably not be a free agent. The Braves

Webb

It is really looking like Arizona is not going to pick up Webb’s option. MLBTradeRumors has been following it, and it seems as if he’ll be available.

Yeah, but

I agree with Tim Dierkes when he constantly says that it wouldn’t make sense for them to not pick up his option. I don’t see how it doesn’t happen. UNLESS, of course they know something about his injury/rehab that we don’t. In which case we wouldn’t want him.

Of that list

The only ones I would even think of picking up would be Lackey or Wolf. Wolf would provide a moderate upgrade and Lackey will be too expensive.

Fan Graphs just had a article about how the top pitchers were acquired, rarely its due to free agency. Just doesnt pay off most times. Draft or trade has to be the way to get pitching. Forget about signing Free Agents.

I see quite a few that would be upgrades over Suppan.

I’d like to see them pick up a middle of the rotation guy to push somebody out of the starting 5, and then either overpay for lackey or trade for someone at the top of the order.

But

Suppan isnt going anywhere

Unless someone wants to trade bad salaries for replacement level players. If it werent for the time remaining, Vernon Wells might work, but why would they want a guy like Suppan?

Unless you trade Bush, but again, who is going to want a replacement level pitcher in a trade?

Harden and Bedard are risky, Marquis or Davis would be Suppan part 2, Wellemeyer or Penny are replacement level guys right now. Maybe Brett Myers.

Im still on board with a Hardy/McGehee/Hart trade to get a pitcher.

by backtocali on Sep 30, 2009 9:24 AM CDT up reply actions

He can go to the bullpen

If a player gets hurt and Suppan is forced to become a starter, I’m fine with that. I think Washburn, Davis, or Duchsherer (is he playing in 2010?) would be better options than Suppan. Who cares if Harden and Bedard are risky? You have to take risks if you want to win in a lackluster FA market like this. What’s the worst that can happen if one of them takes pushes Suppan out of the rotation? They pitch really well for a little while, then they get hurt, and Suppan comes back into the rotation. You’re still probably coming out ahead of where you were. And the beauty of it is that their risk is probably going to lower their price.

Where would the Mariners be this year, without that stellar first half from Bedard? Where would the Brewers have been last year without that stellar first half from Sheets?

As we learned at the deadline

The Brewers don’t have the horses to get a quality pitcher via trade. There is not a package short of Prince that would bring in what we need. Free Agency is the only way to go in our case. The big names all have injury issues (though Lackey is showing he’s past his), and it’s a risk that the Brewers have to take in their current position.

You dont think

A Hardy/Hart/McGehee package coud return the team a decent #3 or maybe even a #2 starter?

I guess I am content with a rebuild, as opposed to spending money on a guy who in the end doesnt really help make a playoff push.

I like Harden, but the last part of the year he looked pretty hittable. And Bedard is great when healthy, but hes rarely healthy. Even worse than Sheets ever was.

by backtocali on Sep 30, 2009 10:50 AM CDT up reply actions

The problem with rebuilding is that it doesn't make sense at this point

Our window of competing is closing as Prince’s Free Agency comes closer and closer. The fact is that rebuilding implies that we have talent in the farm system to bring this team back to competing, and that light at the end of the tunnel just does not exist.

The Brewers are in a WIN NOW phase that necessitates taking risks on the FA market. Sure Hardy and McGehee could bring a #3 starter, but we are more than a #3 starter away from the brass ring.

No kidding

The only one I like is Lackey, and, as the only decent pitcher on the list, he’s going to cost a fortune.

What a trying season this has been. All of our starters have gotten on my nerves - even Gallardo. It’s hard to accumulate all those walks when you only pitch 5 innings at a time.

So, let's say we sign an A and B free agent

Do we only have to give up a 2nd and 3rd round pick, given our draft position?

Let's remove Joel Pineiro from that list

I’m really tired of signing pitchers who had success in St. Louis and then sucked once they got here.

And Randy Wolf

Seriously. This was his first healthy season since 2003, and he WAY overachieved. Not to mention that he’s a Type A FA.

Wait

And Jarrod Washburn too. The only good that can come from signing Jarrod Washburn is that we wouldn’t have to endure the “Brewers should trade for Washburn” rumors every June. Oh, and his last name is a compound word, which is always fun. Maybe he’s a Charles Dickens character!

Because he's in a contract year?

I doubt it. His opponents’ OPS has been steadily increasing since 2004. It was probably actually his worst in STL.

I'd still take Wolf

He did way overachieve, but he’s better than most other FAs out there. And its not like we have to give up our first round pick if we sign him (hooray for the only benefit of a losing season!).
