Corey Patteron called up
I have no idea why. The team already has at least five outfielders better than Patterson, and will have six when Corey Hart comes back next week.

THESE ARE THE WRONG STATS
E: George 4 (5, throw, throw, throw, throw).

I completely agree. Still, that's the reason he's getting the call, whether you or I like it or not.

119 at-bats of not sucking in the minors
3743 PAs of sucking in the majors. I think I know which one is more predictive of what his performance in the majors will be like. Seriously if he gets any start over Gerut I will be an angry person.

My guess?
Sometime in the next week or two, you’re gonna be an angry person.

Yeah -- you are probably right. 2 games at least.

Gerut is somewhere between an average or slightly above average player
Patterson is literally one of the worst players on a major league roster right now. Patterson is only 2 years younger than Gerut too.

Hard to say what they plan on using Patterson for.
He could be simply another lefty option for PH situations. The Brewers might also be using this time as “tryouts” for backup OFs for next season.
But as Mykenk says… I think you’re going to be angry at some point in the near future.

Maybe DM is having second thoughts about Macha and is trying to lure Dusty Baker with Dusty’s favorite toy?

Maybe it's just a courtesy because Hart is going to take somebody's OF job for the final four days down in TN.

184 career stolen bases!
Can’t wait to see how Macha takes advantage of that speed!
oh, wait. right.

Oh, I forgot Patterson's not even on the 40-man roster.
That definitely adds to the head-scratching qualities of this move.

Sure, but I thought that, if anything, it was going to go to a more worthy candidate than Patterson.

Hm, so don't call up Corey P because we've got 5 better options in the OF, but call up Heether when we have 5+ better options in the IF. Gotcha.

Heether - Gets a warm fuzzy feeling knowing his skills are recognized by the club.
Patterson – Gets a warm fuzzy feeling knowing his lack of skills has not been recognized by the club.

And now that spot is wasted.
I was hoping they were holding that spot open to waiver claim one of the decent pitchers DFA’d over the last couple of weeks.

If they really need a spot
They can move Colome to the 60 day DL. If they need two, McClung can join him.

I'm hoping they'll find a spot
By designating Patterson for assignment ASAP.

Just trying to make the other guys feel better
Nothing makes you feel better than knowing you’re not the worst guy at your position. Sorry Patterson, but it’s for the good of the team.

I know his MLB stats suck, and there's no statistical basis for any of this, but...
.. he’s still a pretty young guy. Clearly he suffered from “Rushed to the majors-itis,” but maybe, just maybe, if he’s figured something out, he’s gonna be a solid player.
Again, no basis in reality, but I have to think that the FO must be thinking somewhat along these lines.
by Mykenk on Sep 4, 2009 1:33 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
I don't know if I would call 30 pretty young in baseball terms
Especially for a guy who doesn’t do much but run fast.

Relative to Camerson, Gerut & Catalanatto, 30 is "pretty young"

Gerut is 31
And about 3 times as good as Patterson.

3 times?

Then you should get it checked out.
Gerut has a value above zero, so he’s infinitely more valuable than Patterson.

I know the REAL reason.
See Doug Melvin and Ken Macha were watching a bunch of 80s movies with Corey Haim and Corey Feldman. They loved the chemistry so much, that Melvin turned to Macha and said, “Wait a minute! We have 2 Corey’s too!”
So then they both had one of those cartoon light bulbs appear over their heads.
Next thing you know, Corey Patterson gets called up.
It had to be like that. I can’t see any other reasoning.

And then something else appeared above their heads
And they were suddenly hungry for Arby’s
