SB Nation Coverage

You may have seen this game before. The Brewers jumped out to an early lead on a Prince Fielder 2-run homer in the first inning and followed up with another run in 2nd before the offense shut down. Corey Patterson led off for the second straight game and struck out all three times up before being lifted for Jason Bourgeois in the seventh. JJ Hardy went 1 for 3 and Mike Rivera was 1 for 2 with a walk and an RBI. Corey Hart and Mat Gamel both made appearances after being activated before the game.

Manny Parra only lasted one inning before leaving with neck spasms. Carlos Villanueva relieved him and struck out six over three innings in one of his best performances in recent memory. Todd Coffey allowed the first Cardinals run in the sixth and Dave Weathers was tagged for another run in the seventh. Mark DiFelice and Mitch Stetter also made appearances in those innings. Claudio Vargas worked his magic in the 8th, wriggling out of a leadoff double and bases loaded with one out without allowing a run. Unfortunately, all the batters in the eighth meant Trevor Hoffman had to face the heart of the Cardinals lineup in the 9th and he wasn't up to the task. After getting Brendan Ryan to ground out, he walked Albert Pujols and allowed a home run to Matt Holliday. It was Hoffman's third blown save of the season.

What's the over/under on Patterson starting tomorrow?

If he’s leading off again, I’m lighting myself on fire.

Oh, it's drastic.

And I’m also convinced it’s the only thing that could get Macha’s attention at this point.

This is like a bad sequel: If you thought hitting Jason Kendall in the lead-off spot was insane, just wait until you see Corey Patterson!

Don't be so dramatic.

Light HIM on fire.

The Brewers have won 8 games just like that this year. I call them luck wins.

why didnt I think of this tactic

You are a genius I could have used this Vietnamese Monk approach to my Cammy protests ;)

Everything is just swell :)

I always try so hard not to be pessimistic during games like this

But then every time the team goes and shows me why I should give up the fight and embrace the cynicism.

Why i should give up the fight and embrace the cynicism...

I think I saw that movie once. It ended with the our relief staff riding on a nuclear bomb, right?

My DVR stopped recording at the end of the 8th

lucky me. I had a feeling it would end like this…

"Albert" Pujoles needs to grow up

Did you see his blatant disrespect by walking to first on what he thought was ball four in the 9th? That’s some serious disrespect. He should have waited patiently waited for the umpire to indicate the call of the pitch prior to any reaction. When was the last time those classless hacks made the playoffs much less won the world series?

Grow up.

That’s my best impersonation of the Giants troll.

That was exactly my reaction at the game last night

Monday’s game annoyed me too when he got on base and then like fist-bumped the air.

Or that playing catch celebration he did with Glaus?

DISRESPECTFUL. And in OUR stadium! Geez!

This may have been mentioned in the thread, but...

If you have to play Patterson, why not bat him 9th? He’s probably not going to get on, so you don’t want to give him a ton of at bats. But if he does get on, he’s got the speed to put himself in scoring position for the leadoff guys (even if it is Counsell and Gerut). Why was Lopez out today? If you need to play Counsell, put him at SS, McGehee at 2B and Gamel at 3B.

Gamels pitching

Probably the only way he’ll see play time.

Who would've thought?

Holiday → World Series?

I really cannot get too upset over last night

How many times did the Crew do this to the Cards last year. Chalk it up to Karma

Other than Hoffmann it was amazing what pen did last night as bad as they have been this year to as a group throw a game like that was a nice surprise.

Everything is just swell :)
