I'm glad he finally admitted it, and now we can move on from this... well completely expected announcement.

Will LaRussa...

Condemn him for not playing the game like your are supposed to? Or is untucking still worse then doing roids and lying about it?

I doubt that strongly

as the typical place to inject steroids is the buttocks.

When there is a scuffle in Ireland, there’s no need to specifically mention in the news story that alcohol was involved

Yes, it's difficult.

Doing things the right way usually is.

He wore a dropseat onesie every time he injected.

Just so he didnt’ have to worry about anything coming untucked.

Interesting option arises

If the HoF voters show him a very large bump next year as a result of his admission, the writers can basically take the ball out of the league’s hands by providing incentive for exceptional athletes to come clean and be forgiven for their transgressions.

by nullacct on Jan 11, 2010 3:10 PM CST reply actions

That won't happen

You’ll see these blowhards like Marriotti villianize him now, not vote for him, and then when he’s just about done, he’ll take a “noble stand” and vote for him in his 15th year of eligibility. Hopefully Marriotti dies by then.

"That's not a weird stat. Rickie is a run-scorer," Yost said. "It doesn't matter. It doesn't matter," Yost told reporters. "See, you guys have no concept. He's a run-scorer. So there's nothing weird about it. That's what he does."

Hard to say what's going to happen in the coming years...

McGwire is the first suspected/confirmed steroids user to be eligible for the HoF. Sosa won’t be eligible until 2013, and I don’t think the clock starts on Bonds until he formally retires.

by sjlee on Jan 12, 2010 3:14 PM CST up reply actions

It was basically confirmed that he used something a few years ago

I don’t think it should surprise anyone, and I don’t think it’s a very big deal, either.

Yeah...

… the guy just admitted to committing multiple felonies over the better part of a decade to gain fame and money, refused to admit it under oath in front of congress, refused to cooperate with the commissioners investigation, and then when it’s in his personal interest to acknowledge his behavior (and the statute of limitations has expired), he cops to it, probably so he can say “no comment” and “I’ve already addressed this” now that he’s resurfacing in the MLB. Who cares, right? It’s not like he lied to a grand jury or law enforcement or anything. Oh yeah, we don’t care about that either.

I really don’t get that reaction. I guess I’m just a crotchety old fart who doesn’t like being lied to repeatedly by millionaires who think I should just be grateful I get to watch them at the park and not ask questions about how it is they did what they did.

Ok.

I disagree, largely because I think the guy is likely to reap the benefits of the admission while avoiding the worst of the fallout (and I don’t think he should be rewarded for his cowardice), but ok. I didn’t say he lied. I do wonder, however, if you’ve got kids, and if so I wonder if you’d be willing to let it go if you asked your kid about something you think he did and he said "I’m not here to talk about the past…

I agree with what you're saying here almost entirely

He’s just “admitting it” at a convenient time so he doesn’t have to deal with questions all year. You already know my stance on this issue, and my idea here is that it’s not really a story. I’ve already known he used HGH and some other steroids for a few years now. Him saying it does nothing to change that. That’s why my reaction was what it was.

I agree with all the points except the one about refusing to admit it under oath in front of Congress.

IIRC, McGwire was under subpoena, and, if the reports today are true, Congress refused to grant him immunity before he testified. In that situation, if he was your client, wouldn’t you advise him not to talk about his steroid use?

by Rubie Q on Jan 12, 2010 9:00 AM CST up reply actions

I also think he could have incriminated his brother

so that was another reason he wasn’t forthright.

He didn’t perjure himself either. I thought what Mac did in front of congress was sensible, perhaps cowardly.

Sure I would have.

I also would have told him to invoke his 5th Amendment right to silence instead of responding to repeated questions with blather about not wanting to talk about the past. What I object to is that Mac tried to have it both ways: he wanted to be seen as the stand up guy who also refused to acknowledge any wrongdoing. If he wanted an out on that specific question, he had a no BS option. Instead he (rather poorly) tried to maneuver his way through the hearing without answering the question and without responding in a way that could be taken as an admission of guilt.

I also sincerely doubt that anyone would have been able to successfully investigate or charge him for his late career usage if he had simply said he took steroids, it was a mistake, and he’ll never do it again, and chose not to get specific about the dates. If some FBI agent or federal prosecutor goes after A Rod or any of the other guys who subsequently admitted that they used, then I’ll cede the point, but I don’t think that’s going to happen.

And I agree with you here:
I also sincerely doubt that anyone would have been able to successfully investigate or charge him for his late career usage …

But you know attorneys: we’re not about to start handing out pieces of critical evidence — especially in the form of admissions — when the statute of limitations on a federal drug conspiracy/distribution charge hasn’t run.

In the end, I’m with you: if McGwire was really serious about wanting to admit he took steroids at that hearing, he just should’ve taken the Fifth and been done with it.

my only question

They hired Mark McGwire as a hitting coach? Well, those who can’t do, get Craig Counsell to change his stance for once… (I can’t rag on McGwire without ignoring that Sveum wasn’t exactly Mr. OBP)

Bob Feller quote:

“I think that’s a lot of horse muffins”

I wonder how long he has been waiting to drop the HM-bomb in the press.

I also agree with Bob Feller that I don’t think Mac will get a lot more support now for the HOF, at least initially. I think really the only thing that is bound to help Mac and others, is if voters get a more clear picture of how big the steroid mess was. If it turns out that 75% of the players were using, then I think they could become more sympathetic.
