Ben Sheets headed to Cubs? - Possibly incentive-laden...and where is that huge Lopez contract???
I know this is still in rumor stage, but I would like to point out the following (which I have been saying for months and a few obsessive posters have been slapping me around):
"At some point, Sheets was supposedly asking for a two-year deal for more than $10 million a season. What is more likely to happen is for the Cubs to offer Sheets an incentive-laden contract."
Also:
"Lopez had a fine 2009 (.310/.383/.427), but he's received little interest so far this winter."
Why aren't these two in the 'Crew?!

um.
what?
a) if the cubs want to sign an out of shape pitcher who hasn’t thrown in two years and didn’t really seem all that into it when he did, go for it, enjoy it.
b) The fact that Lopez isn’t signed is actually evidence that DM did the right thing by not offering him arbitration. If we can sign him to a .5M dollar deal to ride the bench, go for it, but we don’t need him, and certainly not at the price he’ll get.
let's be nice
i think you made your points above, but the repeat post comes off a bit abrasive, which was probably not your intent. i can see why a brewers fan would want both back, as ben has an emotional connection to the team (i like him), whereas lopez did well enough last year.
as mykenk points out, ben doesn’t have the best reputation for keeping in shape, which often irritated club management (as did his desire to pull himself from starts with any hint of discomfort – so i’ve heard). combine that with the way his injury happened down the stretch and i don’t think management or sheets seem ready to work with each other again. (i wouldn’t be shocked if sheets is quietly looking to go “favre” against the brewers.) i don’t disagree with braski’s sentiment (in this case) or the idea that the team should take some gambles, though.
as for lopez, he’s been inconsistent over his career and his defense not typically strong. combine that with his likely view of being a starter, and it would probably be too expensive for the brewers/ not a great fit.

Anyone else think it's only a matter of time
before “favre” becomes a verb? “Ben Sheets really favred the Brewers when he signed that deal with the Cubs.”
You've got a couple screws missin' up in your toolbox, if you think that you'll stop this man from hittin' moonshots.
It is.
If the organization is concerned about Weeks’ health, they’d be better off dumping him and signing Lopez as a starter, but they don’t have the payroll room to pay Lopez starter money to sit on the bench waiting for Weeks to go onto the DL.
that was kind of my point...
dump Weeks and sign Lopez as a starter. There has been little to no interest in clubs offering him big $$$, so I think we could have signed him to a 2 year deal in the $5 to $6 range. Why would it be 6+ million Mykenk?! That kind of deserves an “um, what”?
How's that stroke working out for you?

I'll go with...
… um…what?
I’m drunk and I STILL don’t understand that.

His comment makes no sense
But I think he was trying to say you don’t have to pay Weeks if you release him, which is true. They could just back out of arbitration and let him become a free agent.
I think:
1. He thinks Lopez is better than Weeks, which is debatable but probably untrue
2. He says you have to pay him now because he was tendered a contract.
3. He calls you a d-bag.
4. He’s going to make another point about Weeks or something.
5. He realizes it’s not worth his important time.
Although the use of ellipses would indicate that there are some thoughts left out in here. hmmm.

An excellent breakdown, as usual. Thanks.

Rec'd :)
"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"
Weeks doesn't have a contract, so why would the Brewers have to pay him?
As far as Weeks being better than Lopez… I’d like to see a few more full seasons of Weeks before getting to that conclusion.
"Could have"?
They still can. Weeks’ hasn’t been given a new contract yet and Lopez is still a FA (at last check).
The $6M number comes from what he would have likely asked for (and gotten) if the Brewers offered him arbitration.
At MOST, the Brewers should offer Sheets a minor league contract.
There’s no guarantee that he’ll bounce back from this injury and be 100%… plus the fact that he’s injury prone makes him an even bigger risk now. If the Cubs want to over spend on him, then let them.
Lopez could still end up on the Brewers (although doubtful with Counsell on the bench), but it won’t be for the money he would’ve gotten in arbitration. Like Mykenk said, by letting him go to free agency, the Brewers owe him nothing. If they would’ve offered him arbitration, they would’ve been on the hook for him for probably close to $6M.
Like it or not, the Brewers already have a starting second baseman (Weeks). There’s no way the Brewers would spend that kind of money for a backup… even if they’ll likely need him.
Lopez
The whole reason we even got him last year was because we had some money to spend near the trade deadline. Signing either of these two would eliminate that option for this year.
"Cubs suck. I own them" -Doug Davis
good point (because we are keeping Weeks)...but if we could get Sheets for low upfront $$$ and he does...
…get into the incentives, then we won’t (hopefully) need to be fishing around for deadline fodder!
Sheets
You’re assuming we’d need a SP as deadline fodder.
Let’s say that the Brewers do re-sign Sheets for your proposed contract (low upfront money and incentives). Now let’s say that Sheets somehow miraculously stays healthy the entire season and starts making real money thanks to bonuses.
Yeah, that’s great news… except if they need to sign another player because someone in the starting lineup got hurt. Well, guess what? No money left.
If Weeks goes down we shift McGehee to 2nd and bring up Gamel to play 3rd. We don’t need to pay a lot of $$ when we have more than capable replacements already in place.
Sheets is high. He expects a 10 million a year contract, no way is he signing for minor league. It’s been so long for Lopez that he would probably take a 2 million a year contract.
$2M for a backup 2nd baseman?
Seems like cheap insurance for a solid backup for Weeks.
Granted, that would also mean that Gamel would be headed to Nashville to start the season.
Agreed
Just wanted to point that out since they wouldn’t likely keep three backup infielders on the roster.
No way Lopez makes <2M
If he’s smart, he’ll bide his time and hope a 2B goes down with an injury in ST or early in the year.

Orlando Hudson is still unemployed
which doesn’t help Lopez either.
