can't he avoid the team all together?
"That's not a weird stat. Rickie is a run-scorer," Yost said. "It doesn't matter. It doesn't matter," Yost told reporters. "See, you guys have no concept. He's a run-scorer. So there's nothing weird about it. That's what he does."
glad Hyatt and I are on the same page
I really do not like that guy

Is it the first few months when he got here?
I mean, they were pitiful. But he really did a fantastic job turning it around at the end of the year. He’s a very talented player, and I like him quite a bit as a 4th outfielder, but it seems that everyone I talk to can’t get over those first 2 or 3 months.

I'm with you.
Look at his post-AS stats, when he settled into his role a little bit.

Agreed
He’s probably not going to be 2008 Gabe Kapler, but he’s a good fourth outfielder. He also gives a very enlightening interview.

Please don't say it's because the Brewers traded Gwynn for him.

hahaha
no no, I was never a Gwynn fan either. I don’t know. BLAH! My hatred for the man is irrational and has no stats to back it up. It just felt like every time I’d turn on a game, he was giving an underwhelming performance.
since he’s a brewer, I hope he has a great year, pre and post AS

I felt the same way.
But he grew on me. It was completely performance based.

I wouldn't be at all suprised
if he had a nice year. Good signing.
Aaaaaaand
I’m batting 1.000 thus far in my arbitration estimates!
Yay me. Although I’m starting to think that Gomez number I have is waaaaay too high.

me too!
I’ve got Gomez at $1MM. He’s in arb 1, and coming off a year where he hit .229. Seeing as Defense isn’t given much value in arbitration, I’d be surprised to see much more than $1MM. Then again, we’ll see how high his agent pushes that number, Dougie has been willing to compromise with everybody.

The thing that I think MAY drive the dollar value up for Gomez
is his defense. Primarily because Melvin most obviously traded for him ONLY because of his defense. We’ll see, though I think $1M is probably the way to go with him.

agree but...
I agree Gerut’s likely to be a good 4th OF. But $2M seems a lot to spend for his projection. Compare him to currently available former prospect Brandon Jones;
CHONE projects:
Gerut, Jody 0.267 0.328 0.443
Jones, Brandon 0.267 0.342 0.425
That’s around $1M that could be spent in better ways, e.g. paying for a Suppan salary dump.
FWIW, Gerut's a better defender and can play center field
I don’t think paying a little extra for him is going to hamper any other big move.
Particularly if Melvin is able to move malcontent and underperforming incumbent RF

Good point TheJay. Gerut is good out in the field. He’s not likely to be a starter, so his bad batting average doesn’t hurt that much. He’s gonna get one or two at bats every game he comes into. That’s about it. Unless we have a lot of injuries. Gerut did show that he was turning it around. Also, it’s not even spring training yet. So, if Gerut doesn’t show signs of inprovement we can drop him.
