Right now Sheets hitting 88-90 on the gun. Hitting most of his spots but erratic on a few.

She updates:
His fastball topped out at 91.
I dunno. For a guy who used to hit 94-96 with regularity …
Probably not a big deal... my guess is his arm strength is still down a little from 100%.
It’s not even spring training yet… plenty of time for him to get back up to 100%. I’d be more concerned about how many pitches he’ll be able to throw in a game setting.
Just talked w scout, re:how Sheets looked. Good mechanics. Great shape. Is way ahead of where he’d be velocity wise at beg of normal spring

Intrigued by the "great shape" line:
does that mean great shape in general, or great shape for Ben Sheets?
And SHOULDN'T he be far ahead of where he'd be in a normal spring, velocity-wise?
He’s been rehabbing for more than a year, after all …
Not quite a year...
his surgery was on 2/12/2009, which probably means his rehab didn’t start until a month or so after that. They also probably took it very slow.
Yep, you're right.
I messed up my timeline. I think he tried the non-surgery rehab route first, right?
Not sure..
It seems that his need for surgery wasn’t public until he failed his physical for the Rangers. I don’t know if that meant he was trying non-surgery rehab, didn’t think it was as serious as it was or simply tried to get a contract signed while the severity of his injury was not public.
This is from McCalvy last February:
At the time [that’d be September ’08], according to Ash, the medical prognosis was that, "with rest and exercise and rehab, he should be fine."
Asked if there was any talk of surgery at that time, Ash replied simply, "None."
That sounds like a mildly positive review to me
so I dunno about that 8 mil

Jay Jaffe (via ESPN Insider)
has sheets going to the Brewers, with:
If one thinks of him as a third starter instead of an ace or No. 2, it’s actually his old club, the Brewers, who need him most to validate any hopes of contention, as they count three guys with ERAs above 5.00 last year (Jeff Suppan, Manny Parra and David Bush) as their third-starter candidate." – Jay Jaffe

No doubt
I’m not exactly sure why after not getting CC we didn’t approach Sheets. It’s not like he would have passed the physical and we wouldn’t have signed him.
Melvin’d. But hopefully we can get him, I’d actually have to tip my hat to Doug for the most part this off season if he landed Sheets to an incentive laden contract.
I find this incredibly interesting.
Is this new ground for a reporter? Do scouts have incentive to lie to reporters about how he looked if their club wants or doesn’t want to sign a guy?
For instance, perhaps that scout that said he looks great, actually thinks he doesn’t look good, and wants another team to overspend.

I doubt if teams try to get other teams to "overspend".
Besides, I don’t think any team would take the word of another team’s scout… at least not without having their own scout have a look.
Agreed
And besides that, any team that’s interested in signing Sheets probably has their own scout there, so they don’t need to rely on someone else’s account.
That's all I've got for you today, unless you're interested in some Chris Capuano/Tom Haudricourt Fan Fiction.
Right, but doesn't it add a new dynamic to things
Having a reporter there, and all?
Cards Announcers On Gamel's First Career HR, "That’s all they need is another home run hitter".
I dunno -- I suspect the reporter is going to say primarily positive things.
I can’t imagine any team that had any interest would listen to what Trenni has to say.

I'm not talking about from the team's perspective, but from the fan's perspective, this is interesting.
And if the reporter is told negative things by scouts, he/she is going to report those things.

I mean, how often do you get live updates from a players rehab scouting session?

I suspect that this is because MLB TV needs something to talk about.
I mean, Trenni can only clean the coffee pots a non-infinite amount of times.
I don’t think that the scouts are going to say anything to the press that is terribly negative, and I don’t suspect that Trenni would say something bad either, otherwise MLB won’t get invited back next time.

And re: Uncle Charlie, Trenni sez:
I’m no scout but Sheets curve looked pretty darn good. Great location. Obv no batter in the box, but he still looks strong.
Sheets threw about 55 pitches today. Consensus is he looked pretty good. Told me he feels great. Only 4th time he’s thrown off mound.

Good for Sheeter.
Hope to see him back soon.

No way. It'd take way too much $ to rebuild that bridge.
Follow: @mykenk. Read thoughts: http://mhenk.blogspot.com.
Doesn't the government stimulus plan include money for bridge repairs?
Couldn’t hurt to ask.
Applying Simpsons and Star Wars quotes to Brewers discussions since 2009.
Stimulus money had to be used on projects that were shovel ready within 120 days of the bill being passed.
We just barely missed our window…
