Winter League Update for 1/22/2010
In the Dominican Republic: Carlos Gomez went 1-for-3, stole a base and scored a run in Escogido's 3-2 win over Cibao.
Escogido also won Wednesday (with Gomez out of the lineup), so the DWL Championship series (which is a best of nine, by the way) is tied 2-2. The series takes a day off today and resumes in Cibao tomorrow.
In Puerto Rico: Efrain Nieves had an excellent relief appearance in game 2 of a doublehader, pitching 2.2 scoreless innings with three hits, a walk and five strikeouts in Arecibo's 3-2 loss to Mayaguez.
Martin Maldonado caught game 1 and went 1-for-2 with a double before being lifted for a pinch hitter in Mayaguez's 7-1 victory.
With the wins, Mayaguez has opened up a 3-1 lead in the best of seven semifinal series. The two teams are scheduled to meet in a doubleheader again today, with Arecibo needing to win both games to fend off elimination.

How is Gomez doing in the Dom Rep overall? I’ve only seen what he’s done the last week or so, and it doesn’t look good. That guy needs to figure out selectivity sometime in his life.

The places I normally use to track winter ball stats don't track postseason numbers.
His regular season line was pretty decent: .275/.375/.374 with eight stolen bases in ten attempts over 100 PA.
If I get bored at some point I’ll sit down and add up his postseason stats to add in.
That's all I've got for you today, unless you're interested in some Chris Capuano/Tom Haudricourt Fan Fiction.
