Agreed.

I think he probably should have been roughly 12th or so, but even there, it’s impressive to have that many better prospects.

That's all I've got for you today, unless you're interested in some Chris Capuano/Tom Haudricourt Fan Fiction.

by Kyle Lobner on Jan 23, 2010 7:36 PM CST up reply actions

That might wind up being the case for the guys at #7 and #12, too.

The #6 guy started his fourth year at A+, he just got the promotion Rivas didn’t. Also check out #14 and the pitcher at #15, though I’m sure they got ranked more for their names than anything else.

For what it’s worth, A+ is the fourth level of the system (Arizona, Helena, Wisconsin, Brevard County).

by TheJay on Jan 25, 2010 9:01 AM CST up reply actions

fair enough

but yeah…I’d put Jeffress around 42nd, just so he could be at 42.0. That and he hasn’t done much to impress when he has been around.

by PagsBrewCrew on Jan 25, 2010 3:36 PM CST up reply actions

Really, Heckathorn over Rivas?

26 G, 13-7, 2.98 ERA, 133 IP, 109 H, 43 BB, 123 K. Just look at that again. And his stuff is described as a low to mid 90s fastball and a really good change. But if I’m going to campaign just vote for Anundsen because Rivas is so far behind.

E: George 4 (5, throw, throw, throw, throw).

by Jordan M on Jan 24, 2010 2:40 PM CST reply actions

Age/Upside

He is 24 years old and just finished his 2nd tour of High A ball. He may have some nice stuff, but at that age, and that level, guys arent really considered big time prospects any more. Heckathorn is just out of college and has electric stuff. if he improves his control/command, he is either an 8th/9th inning reliever, or a mid rotation starter.

by backtocali on Jan 25, 2010 6:30 AM CST up reply actions

Non flip answer

Older guys still in the minor leagues just arent really considered top notch prospects.

If he follows the pace he is on, Rivas will probably be a 26 year old rookie with a role as a 7th inning guy or something along those lines.

If you believe that a player hits his peak at age 27 or so, and also takes a couple of years to get acclimated to major league ball, a guy Rivas’ or McGehee’s age will be about 2 or 3 years behind schedule compared to top “prospects”.

In lower levels of minor league ball, age has a little bit to do with how bright a players star shines. Rivas is about 2 years older than the average player in High A ball and that can make a huge difference.

by backtocali on Jan 25, 2010 1:05 PM CST up reply actions

I know enough about Heckathorn

And given his profile I don’t see him in AA this year or even next. We’ll see, I guess, but you have to give some credit in rankings to being closer to the majors.

E: George 4 (5, throw, throw, throw, throw).

by Jordan M on Jan 25, 2010 6:01 PM CST up reply actions

Eh

There is a point there a bit, but Heckathorn (I will just add that I was not a fan of him beind drafted at this spot) will most likely be rushed through the system given his stuff and projectability.

This is kind of what happens a lot of times with Latin players. Sign contract, take quite a long time to get acclimated to professional baseball in America, and by the time they figure it out, they are already in the spot that Rivas is in: a bit old to be a prospect with not a lot of projectability left.

I think best case scenario for Rivas is as a late inning guy (7th most likely) who by age 27 or 28 or so turns into a reliable relief option. Heckathorn, if relegated to the bullpen, profiles more as a power 8th or 9th inning guy, or the sky is the limit projection of front line starter.

Brooks Hall

I guess I’m the charter member of the Brooks Hall fan club. Huge potential in that right arm.

I voted Rivas the last 3 times

In any case, I wonder if the Brewers had wonderful pitching at the big league level that they had developed internally, and almost no offense, if folks might rank these differently? Some of the pitchers in the rankings were way too high, in my opinion.

Logan Schafer behind Kentrail Davis?

You guys need to get over that 1st round draft picks are nit necessarily better prospects tan lower round guys. My guess is 90% of you have never seen Schafer or Davis play. Well, I have and you have missed the boat. Schafer to the Bigs way before Davis which makes him a higher prospect in my book.
