Melvin says he's got one more in the works
Haudricourt is reporting that Melvin has one more move - a minor league deal - in the works and speculates its a backup outfielder. Suggests Gabe Gross, Ryan Freel, Reed Johnson and Endy Chavez as possibilites.

Endy Chavez, please

I think I read somewhere that he is out until a couple months into the season.
If he’s fine for spring training, I’m with you though.
Well, then that's probably not who it will be.
I still would love having him as an option in the OF when he recovers

after he robbed prince of his first grand slam, you have to go with the guy right?…man that one still hurts..

I think Gallardo might not like to see him
although I doubt he squarely places that ACL tear on Johnson. Even if I have only ever seen Reed Johnson slide head first into first base.

The article suggests that the Brewers are done signing pitchers. Does this mean no Moulder? Hopefully that still happens.
I wondered the same thing. He clearly consideres the Mulder signing either a done deal or completely dead. Not sure which one.

I don't think he's counting Mulder when he says that because it will be a minor league deal.

DAMON
It would be awesome if Melvin signed Damon and sent Hart to anywhere else! Damon has no arm, but he can still catch balls and he would be a great lefty addition to the lineup.

Interesting
With the earlier additions of Oeltjen/Hopper, don’t the Brewers already have enough outfielders in the system?
Any of those four would be pretty nice deals though, especially on minor-league contracts. Plus, if you give Braun the day off or are playing with a DH (preferably latter, since you’d need the extra offense!) imagine a Chavez-Gomez-Hopper outfield with Randy Wolf pitching. Sick!
(PS – glancing at their stats, Reed Johnson had a 4.5 WAR season in 2006? Where’d that come from? He’s the obnoxiously-goateed Corey Hart)
Ryan Braun: He loves it.
No, not really.
Oeltjen might win the job and be fine, but Hopper had a sub-.700 OPS in AAA last year. As things stand right now, the Brewers are one injury in camp away from having both of them on the opening day roster.
That's all I've got for you today, unless you're interested in some Chris Capuano/Tom Haudricourt Fan Fiction.
Johnson
Seems like he would be a decent bat off the bench.
"A D+ Grade? That must have been a Wittardo grade"- @73_MC
I was just looking at his stats
He can’t hit lefties, though. I’m also not sure he can be had for only a minor-league deal.
I bet it’s Gross. He did well as a Brewer, he’d be minor-league deal worthy, and we used him in center before (in case our Gomez plan goes awry). I wonder if Gomez’s offseason numbers so far are giving Melvin reason to think “hey, maybe we need another backup plan in centerfield.”

I would like to predict Marcus Thames
Not because I think he is a good player, or that he is a good fit — but rather, he is one of the few Melvin era* Rangers left.
*(I know Thames played in TX after Melvin left, but I am thinking it may be close enough)

I'd be ok with that
Having some Pop coming off the bench woudl be great.

Let's not rule out ex-Brewer
Gary Sheffield

Bring back Gabe
For the only reason that I can wear my game worn jersey with out people thinking I’m wearing a custom jersey.
I've forgotten
is your Gross jersey #18 (still potentially reassignable) or #14 (probably not budging off Casey’s back)?
You've got a couple screws missin' up in your toolbox, if you think that you'll stop this man from hittin' moonshots.
Rick Manning
Since he seems to meet all of Doug Melvin’s criteria, I say bring back Rick Manning. He’s old, washed up and is an ex-Brewer. Perfect!
Who that DM has signed has been old, washed up, and a former brewer?
