Rumor here in STL: Jim Edmonds to Milwaukee
The morning show I listen to here in Saint Louis features a guy named Tim McKernan who happens to be buddies with Mr. Jim Edmonds. Edmonds has recently been discussing the possibility of a return to baseball. Initially the thought was he would return to the Cards for the league minimum, but apparently talks never really got off the ground here in the Lou with Edmonds wanting 400 at bats. In a recent interview with McKernan Edmonds said Milwaukee had been in touch early in the season, but nothing came of it. Tim is now implying that Edmonds' phone is ringing and it's Mr. Melvin that's calling. I know this is all complete speculation here, but this could be the final pickup Melvin's been working on - thoughts?

We already have a CF that can't hit
why would we need another one that can no longer hit either?
"That's not a weird stat. Rickie is a run-scorer," Yost said. "It doesn't matter. It doesn't matter," Yost told reporters. "See, you guys have no concept. He's a run-scorer. So there's nothing weird about it. That's what he does."
If it's a minor league deal, what's the harm?

I suppose we might have a need
if Gomez doesn’t pan out offensively and is sent to AAA.
Still…I can’t see Edmonds contributing at a level high enough to warrant 400 ABs. I could see him being invited to spring training, but not winning a starting spot.

It would make sense
Melvin usually tries to have 2 washed up veterans on the team. We lost Kendall and Cameron last year, and we’ve only replaced Kendall with Zaun.

Are you suggesting that Cameron is washed up?

Not at all.
We lost two veterans. He’s probably looking to sign a veteran to replace Cameron’s veteran presence. Given the amount of money left, and past backup outfielder signings like Kapler, the Catman… he’ll probably sign an old guy who’s past his prime.

Latest quotes from his agent
Suggested that Edmonds was looking for a place where he could play a platoon role and get 400 ABs, which pretty much ended any discussions he was having with the Cards.
If he came to Milwaukee I’d be worried what Melvin promised him. If he wanted to take a minor league deal or a reduced role I’d suspect he’d look somewhere besides Milwaukee.

Why would the Brewers be interested in Edmonds?
Even at a minor league deal, why waste the money on player who’ll be 40 this year, didn’t even play last season and whose production has been on the decline over the past 5 years?
The Brewers still have options… the first being Gerut. Even if Gomez doesn’t improve at the plate, I don’t think the Brewers will send him down. They may start platooning in CF, but I think only an injury will take Gomez off the 25-man roster.
Gerut's the 4th OF, we're looking for a 5th.

Isn't that why they signed Inglett?
Besides, I don’t think the Brewers can guarantee 400 ABs to a 5th OF.
I don't know why they signed inglett.
But I’m assuming he’ll have to earn the spot like everyone else.

He'd be well-rested. :)

not this chain
The JS commentors were talking about it. It looks like there’s one named brewcrewjon who’s right quite often.
I was thinking the same thing, “TH was reading bcb earlier..” so I checked out his comments.

I guess some rumors are true
I need to keep listening to St. Louis sports talk in the morning to get my Brewers transaction news

As long as he stays out of CF
It’s not a bad 4th/5th OF signing. His days as a legitimate CF are long done though, his range was really bad in 2008.
I don't think a 4th/5th OF is going to get considerable playing time anywhere.

Likely a late game sub...
I’m guessing mostly as a PH, with the occasional 9th inning in the OF.
Could also work as a DH during interleague play.
He might if one of Corey Hart's other organs decides to explode.
Not that I’m hoping for that or anything.
